Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS... Rain showers will diminish by early afternoon
across the Central Interior. Another system will bring more
showers into the Southern and Central Interior on Monday. High
temperatures will run 5 to 10 degrees cooler than normal while low
temperatures will be near normal. A front will push across the
north slope today and bring elevated surf to the Chukchi Sea Coast
through this afternoon.

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft at 500 mb, a 550 dam low pressure trough currently over the
Eastern Interior will continue to push to the east today. A 519
dam low over the Chukchi Sea will continue to push south and east
and will be located 350 nm northwest of Point Barrow by Saturday
evening. Zonal flow will set up over most of the state on Sunday.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Rain will diminish Saturday morning in the Alaska Range and
Eastern Interior as a front continues to push to the east through
the Eastern Interior. Snow above 3500 feet in the Alaska range
will be tapering off as well. Areas of fog could develop around
the Interior this morning due to all the recent rains. Lows
Sunday morning could drop into the mid 30s for many locations,
with the colder spots expected to drop below freezing, although
this will depend on how quickly the skies clear. Daytime highs on
Sunday will be warmer thanks to less cloud cover, with highs in
the upper 50s to lower 60s. Another system will bring more
showers into the Southern and Central Interior on Monday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A front moving across the north slope will bring precipitation
to the north slope this afternoon and into the Eastern Brooks
Range into tonight. Mostly rain along the north slope with the
possibility of some snow mixed in around Utqiagvik this afternoon.
About an inch of snow is possible for Atigun Pass, with around a
quarter of an inch of rainfall at lower elevations. Westerly winds
will continue through Saturday. The winds will also produce
elevated surf along the Chukchi Sea Coast, with water levels 1 to
2 feet above the normal high tide line this morning into Sunday
morning. Saturday highs will be in the upper 50s along the
Beaufort sea coast due to strong offshore winds ahead of the
front, while the Chukchi Sea Coast will only see highs in the 40s
due to onshore flow behind the front. Sunday will be cooler, with
highs along the coast in the upper 30s to lower 40s. Lows the next
few nights will generally be in the lower 30s.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Mostly cloudy skies and breezy over mush of the West Coast and
Western Interior as a low in the Central Interior continues to
push to the east. Low pressure in Bristol Bay will spread rain
across the Yukon Delta on Sunday, then into the Western Interior
Sunday night. High temperatures Saturday will generally be in the
50s with lows tonight and Saturday night in the 40s.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
West to southwesterly flow is expected for much of next week.
Several shortwaves will pass through the flow bringing chances
for rain as they pass through. A system moving through late next
week looks to bring more significant chances for preciptiation.
Temperatures in the extended will trend near to slightly below the
seasonal normal.

.FIRE WEATHER...
No fire weather concerns are expected.

.HYDROLOGY...
Precipitation will be on the decrease today across the Interior.
Another chance of rain on Monday. Due to the recent rains, most
rivers and streams will see some rises as this water moves through
the system; however, no issues are anticipated as all rivers and
streams are expected to remain in bank.
