Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong low pressure located in the southern Bering Sea will move
into the Gulf of Alaska today, resulting in increasing north
winds and elevated surf along the north side of St. Lawrence
Island beginning this evening and lasting into Saturday. Chances
for snow across the Interior increasing this afternoon, before
the surface low located in the Yukon and Northwest Territories
tracks north and brings snow and strong winds to the eastern
Arctic Coast tonight and into tomorrow. Fog issues have improved
across the North Slope this morning, while windy conditions in the
Interior continue to subside.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
The upper level pattern consists of mostly south to southeast flow
across northern Alaska this morning. Weak ridging extends east to
west across the Brooks Range, as a couple of strong closed lows
extend across from the southeastern Bering Sea to the Alaskan
panhandle.

The trough over the panhandle will move north and quickly break
down the ridging, bringing mostly a trough pattern over the state
going into next week. The trough moving north will be situated
near Demarcation Point by Saturday morning, while the strong
closed low in the southeastern Bering Sea will slide east into the
Gulf of Alaska. This feature will swing a shortwave trough towards
the Alaska Range on Sunday, but models differ on how far this
feature will penetrate into the Interior going into Sunday night.

Another shortwave trough will move to the West Coast on Sunday,
before model uncertainty increases as to the movement of this
feature going into Sunday night.

At the surface, a strong sub-950 mb low in the Bering Sea is the
headline feature this morning. This low will track eastward into
the Gulf of Alaska and weaken. Surface low pressure will develop
in the Yukon and Northwest Territories this morning before
tracking offshore near the AlCan border by late tonight. As a
result of the movement and development of these features, strong
north to northeast winds will develop across the Bering Sea this
evening and into Saturday.

Surface low pressure will develop along the West Coast on Sunday,
but due to the differences in track of the upper level trough,
the surface feature also has discrepancies in location and
intensity at this time between models. These differences will
affect the areas that receive the most snow, so the current
forecast blends the solutions together.

Overall, not an overly impactful pattern, but there is a lot of
uncertainty beginning even within the first 24 hours of the
forecast as models struggle to handle the strong surface low and
associated upper level features in the southern Bering Sea as it
tracks into the Gulf of Alaska.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Alaska Range winds have subsided, while easterly winds through the
Tanana Valley continue to diminish this morning. Surface low
pressure developing in the Yukon and Northwest Territories this
morning will bring increasing chances for snow along the AlCan
border through tonight. However, uncertainty remains on how far
west the snow will spread, but overall snow accumulations will
remain between 1 to 2 inches north and east of Fairbanks through
tonight. The next round of snow looks to develop Sunday morning,
but model discrepancies remain large in terms of timing, location,
and intensity going into next week. Temperatures remaining above
normal going into next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Fog conditions have improved across the North Slope this morning.
Chances for snow increasing this evening across the eastern
Brooks Range and tonight across the eastern Arctic Coast with 1 to
2 inches of accumulation for these areas through tomorrow evening.
Winds will pick up out of the west to northwest around 25 to 35
mph along the eastern Arctic Coast as the surface low pressure
tracks north of Kaktovik by tomorrow morning. Temperatures
trending down but remaining above normal through the weekend.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Persistent north to northeast flow along the coast expected to
persist through the weekend. Winds will strengthen to 30 to 40
mph from Point Hope to St. Lawrence Island south as the pressure
gradient tightens through the Bering Strait this evening. These
conditions will result in elevated surf for St. Lawrence Island
going into Saturday. Cold air advection through this region will
result in the development of snow showers over the open water that
could drift to areas along the north facing coasts of the Seward
Peninsula and St. Lawrence Island tomorrow and into Sunday.
Surface low pressure will develop along the West Coast early
Sunday morning, resulting in increasing chances for snow. However,
the exact placement of the low and associated fronts remain
uncertain at this time. Temperatures remaining near normal over
the next several days.

Coastal Hazard Potential...Northeast winds 30 to 40 mph
developing through the Bering Strait this evening will result in
elevated surf with wave runup of up to 2 feet above the normal
high tide line along the north shore of St. Lawrence Island going
into Saturday. Residents should move boats and other property
well above the normal high tide line in advance of the storm.

Through Saturday...

Elevated surf with wave runup of up to 2 feet above normal high
tide line is expected along the north shore of St Lawrence Island
today and continuing into Saturday.

A strong low pressure system will be moving through the Eastern
Bering Sea today and into the Gulf of Alaska Saturday. Northeast
winds 30 to 40 mph will develop over the Northeast Bering Sea and
Chukchi Sea this evening and turn from the north early Saturday.
Winds will diminish Saturday evening.

Residents should move boats and other property well above the
normal high tide line in advance of the storm.
