Lawrence Island Mon night.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Interior fog and low stratus has broken as a weak front is
producing rain showers this afternoon along the Alaska Range to
Fairbanks to the Yukon Flats. A different weather front will push
across the Seward Peninsula and into the western to central Brooks
Range tomorrow afternoon, with expected precipitation amounts to
cause rivers to remain high in the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys
through Wednesday. Otherwise, dry conditions returning to the
Central and Eastern Interior after Monday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
A strong upper level closed low located to the north of Wrangel
Island will be the main driver for the weather over the next 24
hours or so. A strong shortwave in associated with this feature is
currently situated along the West Coast and will move into the
Interior by tomorrow morning before lifting to the northeast into
Canada by tomorrow night. Ridging will build across the eastern
Interior behind this shortwave tomorrow night and into Tuesday
night.

The strong closed upper low will send a second shortwave
across the West Coast tomorrow afternoon as the upper low
retrogrades to the east of Wrangel Island by tomorrow night. This
upper closed low will become more of a longwave feature that will
dig through the Bering Sea and into the Gulf of Alaska, bringing
southerly flow across northern Alaska by Wednesday morning.

At the surface, a low situated to the east of Wrangel Island has
an occluded front stretching eastward well to the north of the
Arctic Coast. The remnant cold front stalling across the North
Slope, Brooks Range and into the Interior this afternoon. This
will result in rain showers across the region through tonight as
the front moves to the east and exits northern Alaska by tomorrow
afternoon.

Another surface low pressure will quickly develop west of St.
Lawrence Island tonight, with a strong front impacting the West
Coast by tomorrow morning. This front will then reach the Brooks
Range by tomorrow night and remain in that region through
Wednesday. A second surface low will reinforce the front situated
along the Western Interior beginning on Wednesday morning,
continuing cloudy and rainy conditions along the West Coast and
Western Interior going into the later portions of the week.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Rain showers have moved into the Tanana Valley this afternoon.
There is a chance for isolated thunderstorms across the eastern
Interior and stretching west to Fairbanks. After the showers move
through tonight, relatively dry conditions developing across the
region going into the middle of the week. Temperatures will
generally stay near to slightly below normal going into the middle
of the week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
A weather front lifting well north of the Arctic Coast is expected
to bring showers to portions of the Central and Eastern Beaufort
Sea Coast into tomorrow morning. Generally west flow across the
North Slope before high pressure slides across the Arctic Plains,
and eventually bringing easterly flow by tomorrow night. A strong
surface low pressure will bring a strong front to the western and
central Brooks Range by tomorrow night, with precipitation lasting
through Wednesday. Temperatures will hover around normal through
tomorrow, before being above normal by Wednesday.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Scattered showers this afternoon around Norton Sound will continue
into tomorrow. A strong surface low will bring widespread rain to
the Seward Peninsula by tomorrow morning and spreading into the
Western Interior to the foothills of the Brooks Range by tomorrow
afternoon. Generally 1-2 inches of rain expected in this region,
with snow at elevations above 3000 feet. Continued high waters on
rivers in the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys expected to last into the
later portions of the week. Temperatures expected to remain below
normal over the next few days.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

.HYDROLOGY...
Rain will move across the western and central Brooks Range
beginning Monday morning and last through Wednesday morning. Areas
in the Kobuk and Noatak Valleys will receive between 1-2 inches
during this timeframe. Expect increasing water levels to rivers
and streams that are already running high in this region, with
elevated waters lasting into the end of the week.
