the Western Bering Sea will move to the Central Bering Sea by 3pm

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Ongoing snow event continues to pile up snow in the Interior with
nearly 10 inches of snow falling in Fairbanks since Thursday
morning. Another couple inches of snow is expected to fall this
afternoon and evening before the snow tapers off from west to east
late this afternoon and early evening in the central Interior and
by late this evening in the Eastern Interior. Wind have increase
again on the North Slope, Western Capes and Bering Strait and
combined with low temperatures continue to produce low wind chills
in these areas. A deep low pressure system moving through Bristol
Bay will produce snow and blowing snow over the Lower YK Delta
tonight and Monday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...
Models...The 28/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z
surface analysis and verified well against the 18z surface
analysis on major features and strength with the exception of the
low near Yakutat which was initialized too weak by the models.
This difference under estimated the pressure gradient and
consequently the winds and the intensity of the snowfall over the
Southeast Interior. Have bumped up the winds, snow and slowed the
end time of the precip in this area.

Aloft...
The long wave pattern consists of a deep trough over the Western
Pacific and Western Bering Sea and a ridge over the North East
Pacific. A strong short wave stretching from the Central Brooks
Range south over Fairbanks and into the Gulf of Alaska will move
east into NW Canada tonight.

A deformation zone that has formed ahead of this short wave
trough now lies from Denali to just east of Fairbanks to
Arctic Village and continues to produce moderate snow at times.
This deformation zone is expected to break down later this
afternoon and early this evening as the trough moves east.

A second strong short wave in the Western Bering will
move to Southwest Alaska tonight, then stretch east across
Mainland Alaska Mon and Tue. This second short wave will bring
more snow to Alaska South of the Brooks range. This will also
pull the long wave trough east over Mainland Alaska by Tue and it
will remain there into mid-week.

Surface...
A 1015 mb low near Barter Island will continue to weaken and drift
north and east into Monday. Winds around this low continue to
produce southwest winds around 15 mph and wind chills to 65 below
over Barter Island through Monday morning. Expect wind chill
values in the 50 to 59 below range over much of the Arctic Coast

A ridge of high pressure over the Chukchi Sea and North Slope of
Alaska will move north of the Arctic Coast of Alaska tonight and
then persist into Tue. This will cause winds to turn east over the
Arctic Coast late tonight and will help produce the low wind chill
values over the Arctic Coast.

A 980 mb low currently located near Yakutat will continue to
weaken and push into the Southern Yukon this evening. A front
rotating around this low is located over the Southeast Interior
this afternoon and will move east into the Yukon this evening. An
additional 2 to 4 inches of snow are expected through late this
evening in the Southeast Interior. The pressure gradient around
the low near Yakutat is also causing NW winds of 20-30 mph and
blowing snow with low visibility along the Alaska Highway and
through Alaska Range passes that will continue through this
late this afternoon and early evening and then taper off by late
this evening.

A very strong low currently northwest of Shemya will continue to move
north and east into the central Bering Sea as a 962 mb low by
Monday afternoon and then move southeast to be located near Cold
Bay as a 980 mb low on Tuesday. A weather front associate with
this low will bring another round of snow and blowing snow with
low visibility to the Yukon Delta from late tonight through Mon
night, with 4 to 6 inches of snow expected in the Lower YK Delta
and southern portions of the Western Interior Monday and
Tuesday. This will also cause northeast winds and blowing snow to
increase over the West Coast Mon and Tue and continue to produce
low wind chill values from the Seward Peninsula north along the
coast.
