expected to fall through Sunday. An additional 4 to 7 inches of
snow is expected to fall in the Fortymile Country south of Chicken
through Monday. Northeast winds of 20 to 30 mph along Capes of
the West Coast, through Brooks Range Passes and over summits of
Interior Highways are causing wind chills of 40-50 below and areas
of reduced visibility in blowing snow that will last through Sun,
and possibly into Mon. Gusty northwest winds are expected to
develop this evening in the Upper Tanana Valley and gusty
northerly winds are expected to develop in the Alaska Range this
evening and will produce low visibilities in blowing snow. Well
below normal temperatures over the North Slope and West Coast will
persist into next week, and are expected to spread into the
Interior next week.

.DISCUSSION...

Aloft at 500 hpa, the long wave pattern consists of a trough from
the Canadian Archipelago across northern Alaska into the Bering,
with ridge over the Eastern Pacific and southern Alaska. A series
of strong short wave troughs will continue to move east through
the ridge and gradually pull the long wave trough east over
Mainland Alaska by Tuesday and remaining there into mid-week. This
will keep a snowy pattern over Southern Interior through Mon,
with dramatic cooling next week under the long wave trough.

Brief southerly flow aloft this evening will cause snow to taper
off over the Fairbanks area before flow weakens late tonight and
snow redevelops late tonight and continues into Sunday.

At the surface, a ridge of high pressure centered in Eastern
Siberia and extending east over the Southern Chukchi Sea and north
of the Arctic Coast of Alaska will persist through Mon.

A weather front stretching from the Yukon Delta to Eagle will weaken
tonight. This is causing snow across most of the area south of
the Yukon River. An Arctic Cold front along the West Coast will
move to the Western Interior tonight to the Central Interior on
Sun PM, and southeast of the area on Sun night. Snow will taper
off along and west of this cold front.

The pressure gradient between these features is causing northeast
winds of 20 to 30 mph along Capes of the West Coast, through
Brooks Range Passes and over summits of Interior Highways along
with wind chills of 40-50 below and areas of reduced visibility
in blowing snow that will last through Sun, and possibly into Mon.
This winds and blowing snow will spread to the Alaska Range and
Alaska Highway after midnight tonight.

A 988 mb low currently located near Kodiak will continue to deepen
to 974 mb as it pushes east near Prince William Sound Sunday
morning and then weakens to around 986 mb as it moves inland near
Yakutat on Monday. Snow wrapping around this low will continue to
impact the Southeast Interior into Monday. A 978 mb low southwest
of Shemya will deepen and move to just north of Shemya as a 956 mb
low by Sunday afternoon, and then move into the central Bering
Sea as a 956 mb low by Monday afternoon. This will ramp up winds
again along the West Coast on Monday.

Models initialized well against the 12z surface analysis and
verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model spread from
model run to model run continues to improve and model spread from
model family to model family continues to improve.
