.SYNOPSIS FOR NORTHWEST COAST...
A 1066 mb high 350 nm N of Deadhorse will drift over the Northern
Beaufort Sea tonight and strengthen to 1070 mb. A trough of low 
pressure will develop over the Arctic Coast with a 1035 mb low 
developing just west of Utqiagvik on Wednesday evening. A broad 
area of low pressure will persist over the Bering Sea as a front
moves northwest into the Bering Sea on Thursday.

.SYNOPSIS...
Clear, cold and very low wind chills will continue over mainland
Alaska through Wednesday and as a front approaches clouds and a
weak chinook will moderate the well below average temperatures,
at first over the higher terrain and then over interior valleys by
late in the week. Chicken Alaska dropped to 57 below this morning
with another round of 50 below possible again Tuesday morning in
cold spots in the interior. Most locations in the interior and
North Slope will see temperatures in the 30s and 40s below. Wind
chill values on the North Slope will drop to around 70 below
tonight and will continue into tomorrow.

.DISCUSSION...
Aloft...
At 500 hpa, a deep and cold upper level trough extends from the
North Pole south over Eastern Alaska the Yukon and the Northwest
Territories while a high amplitude ridge extends northwest near
Kodiak Island into eastern Siberia. Cold northerly flow will
continue over Eastern Alaska as a 508 dm upper level low pushes
northwest over mainland Alaska Tuesday and Wednesday. The cold
upper level low continues to push north and west into Siberia as
a strong upper level ridge builds north out of the Gulf of Alaska
over Eastern Alaska and the Yukon. A return to southerly flow as
well as increasing clouds a chance for light snow will bring a
warm up over much of Alaska beginning on Thursday and continuing
into the weekend. Temperatures will begin to warm late Wednesday
and will continue to warm into the weekend with more seasonal
temperatures expected.

Surface...
Sprawling high pressure continues in place north of the North
Slope with Utqiagvik coming close to setting a record high
pressure for February. This high pressure combined with low
pressure in the Gulf of Alaska continues to bring winds over the
summits in the interior and along the Arctic Coast. These winds
combined with very cold temperatures are producing wind chill
values pushing 70 below. Wind Chill Warnings have been issued for
the coastal areas of the North Slope. Strong winds and low
temperatures are producing very cold wind chills over Interior
Alaska Summits as well as produce limited visibility in blowing
snow. Winter Weather Advisories and Wind Chill Advisories have
been issued for these areas.

Models...
The 8/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z surface
analysis and verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model
spread remains limited in the short range but increases
dramatically in the medium and long range forecasts.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Clear skies and subzero temperatures are expected for the next
couple days. The higher sun angle of February is at least allowing
temperatures that drop into the 30s and 40s below to moderate into
the teen below during the afternoons. Expect another night of 30s
and 40s below with cold spots again dipping below 50 below.
Northeast winds will continue over higher terrain and in channeled
areas, resulting in areas of blowing snow. Although the windy
areas will have warmer ambient temperatures, winds chills from 40
to 55 below are likely. The biggest impact will be to higher
terrain of the Steese, Elliott, and Dalton Highways.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Mainly clear skies and cold temperatures will be the rule tonight
and again on Tuesday. Winds will increase across the western
Interior and Seward Peninsula with local blowing snow and low wind
chills. Clouds, snow, and warmer air will move into the western
part of the state Wednesday and Thursday.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...
Skies will also be mostly clear except for some pesky stratus and
fog along the coast. Cold temperatures will persist over the next
few days. Increasing east to northeast winds along the Chukchi and
Beaufort Sea coasts combined with cold temperatures, will bring
dangerously cold wind chills, especially from Point Lay to the
Canadian border through mid-week. Wind Chill Warnings have been
issued for these areas where wind chills are expected to drop to
around 70 below.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...
Much warmer temperatures as the pool of cold Arctic air is
shunted off to the northwest of the state and southerly flow
returns. Periods of snow are also expected over the western half
of the state Thursday and Friday, while it looks like the eastern
half of the state remains dry into next weekend.
