.SYNOPSIS...
Light snow over the Central and Eastern Interior will slowly
diminish to flurries tonight with generally less than 1 inch of
additional accumulation expected. Clearing continues along the
West Coast and North Slope with temperatures falling and gusty
winds through the Western Brooks Range Passes and along the West
Coast combining to produce low Wind Chill Values. Winds will pick
up tonight along the Eastern Arctic Coast where a Winter Weather
Advisory has been issued for blowing snow.

.DISCUSSION...
Models...the 11/12z model suite initialized well against the
surface analysis as well as the upper level observations and
verified well against the 18z surface analysis. Model spread
remains minimal in the short range as well as the mid range.
Spread between different model families and from run to run
remains at reasonable levels into the long range.

Aloft at 500 mb...A deep longwave trough extending from the pole
southward to Point Barrow and then southeast into the northeastern
Gulf of Alaska is currently anchored by a 495 dm low over the
North Slope and a secondary 505 dm low over Yakutat. An upper
level ridge continues to build north and east over the Western
Bering Sea and will be centered over the Central Bering Sea Sunday
and over the Eastern Bering Sea and West Coast of Alaska by
Monday. A strong upper level low will move rapidly east over the
upper level ride Monday and into Tuesday and will weaken the ridge
as it pushes east over Western Alaska Monday and Tuesday. The
ridge on the West Coast of Alaska will produce north to
northwesterly winds aloft with 850 mb temperatures dropping over
most of northern Alaska. 850 mb temperatures over Fairbanks will
drop from the current 20 below celsius to 25 below celsius by
Sunday morning and will remain in the 20s below at 850 mb into
Tuesday of next week. Temperatures will drop from northwest
Alaska to southeast as the cold airmass moves southeast over
Northern Alaska, especially as skies clear out from west to east
Sunday into Monday and Tuesday.

On the Surface, weak low pressure along an inverted trough over
the Central Interior will continue to weaken tonight as high
pressure builds over the Eastern Bering Sea and Western Alaska
Sunday. Light snow over the Central and Eastern Interior will
diminish tonight to flurries with clouds remaining over the
Central and Eastern Interior into Monday. Temperatures will drop
over the North Slope, the West Coast and Western Interior as the
cold airmass aloft pushes east out of Siberia and the Eastern
Bering Sea over the West Coast and Western Interior especially as
skies clear out Sunday and Monday. Clouds will be slower to clear
out over the Central and Eastern interior with the coldest
temperatures expected in these areas on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...High pressure continues to build
east across the Arctic Plain, as low pressure south of the Brooks
Range weakens and moves to the east. A strong pressure gradient
continues across the Chukchi Sea, Western Arctic, and Brooks
Range and combined with low temperatures is producing low wind
chill values over the Western Brooks Range. Light snow and
flurries continue in the eastern Arctic. Winds west of Nuiqsut
will be northwest at 10 to 25 mph and gusty, while winds from
Nuiqsut east will be southwest to west at 5 to 15 mph, except from
Point Tompson east winds increasing to 20 to 30 mph gusting to 40
mph with blowing and drifting snow reducing visibility. Highs
today zero to 15 below. Lows tonight will range from around 10
below to around 30 below. Temperatures will be cooler through
Tuesday.

West Coast and Western Interior...Strong north winds along the
outer coastal areas continue from the Bering Strait north. Strong
winds will continue to produce blowing and drifting snow with
poor visibility at times on the Bering Strait Coast tonight. Highs
today from the single digits above on St Lawrence Island, to
teens below in the inland areas. Lows tonight will range around
zero on St Lawrence Island, to teens and 20s below along the
coast, and from the 20s to 30s below inland.

Central and Eastern Interior...Light snow will continue to
diminish tonight with flurries and clouds expected into Sunday.
Low temperatures will drop into the teens below tonight and into
the 20s below Sunday night. Temperatures will continue to drop as
skies clear out Monday and Tuesday with minimum temperatures in
the 30s and 40s below. Winds variable to 10 mph in most areas with
north winds to 25 to 35 with gusts to 50 mph south of Trims Camp
with blowing and drifting snow. Lows tonight will fall to zero to
25 below.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...Cold air will push south into
Northern Alaska with well below zero across much of the area
through Wednesday. Temperatures in the Interior will be in the 20s
to around 40 below for lows. A strong winter storm will move to
the West Coast Wednesday bringing another round of wind, snow, and
potential for blizzard conditions over much of the West Coast
before the front moves inland Thursday.

Camp South...

North winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts near 50 mph will continue
this evening and continue into Sunday south of Trims Camps along
the Richardson Highway will produce blowing and drifting snow. the
winds combined with cold temperatures will produce wind chill
values of 30  to 50 below.

The north winds will persist into Sunday before diminishing.
Blowing snow may reduce visibility to one half mile or less at
times, while drifting snow may impact travel through the area.

Drivers should be prepared for difficult winter driving conditions
and keep appropriate winter gear available.
