Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Active weather across the Interior snow has developed
along a trough today. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued
for areas around Fairbanks, the Parks Highway, and the Richardson
Highway north of Birch Lake and will continue through Saturday.
Strong winds along the West Coast will move inland with colder
temperatures thus Wind Chill Advisories have been issued. Colder
air will settle across mainland Alaska on starting as early as
Sunday morning on Western Interior and expanding east towards
Central and Eastern Interior by Tuesday. A strong winter storm
will impact West Coast and Western Interior by Wednesday next week
and potentially bring heavy snow to Interior by the later part of
next week.

.DISCUSSION...

Models are in generally good agreement with the upper level low
features and surface features. The biggest challenges will be
snow ratios with the snow falling across the Central Interior.
Also increased probabilities of precipitation over the eastern
Brooks Range and along the Beaufort Sea coastline.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...The low pressure system seen via
GOES satellite imagery northwest of Utqiagvik will continue to
move southward and will merge into a trough north of the Eastern
Arctic Coast. High pressure is expected to build east across the
Arctic Plain. A strong pressure gradient has developed across the
Chukchi Sea and Western Arctic and will continue to strengthen
through Saturday. Have issued a Winter Weather Advisory for
Anaktuvuk and Atigun area along the Brooks range due to the strong
north winds of 30 mph. The winds will create reduced visibilities
along with snow, blowing and drifting snow. In addition combined
with the winds and colder temperatures, wind chill values will
reach 50 below zero on Saturday morning. On Saturday night into
Sunday, west winds will increase around Kaktovik 20 to 30 mph and
gusty with some blowing and drifting snow, will likely need to
issue a winter weather advisory for the eastern Beaufort Sea
coast.

West Coast and Western Interior...Expect strong northerly winds to
resume across the Bering Strait. While the winds have tapered
across St Lawrence Island the winter weather advisory will be
extended as the winds across the Bering Strait Coast will
continue with gusts up to 50 mph, snow and blowing snow and reduce
visibilities to one half mile or less at times. Along with the
north winds will be colder temperatures in place which the
combination of cooler air and winds will allow for Wind Chill
temperatures to reach 30 to 50 below zero in the Baldwin
Peninsula and Selawik, Upper Kobuk and Noatak Valleys and and 45
below zero along the Seward Peninsula and the Bering Strait coast.
Colder air will continue to filter across the Western Interior
with the coldest temperatures expected Monday morning with 30 to
40 below zero for minimum temperatures.

Central and Eastern Interior...Earlier this morning there was a
brief light snow across greater Fairbanks area as the band shift
northeast then around mid day the GOES satellite and PAPD radar
reflectivity showed snow filling in across the area. A winter
weather advisory continues through tomorrow, with total snowfall
accumulation up to 2 to 4 inches expected with localized areas of
5 inches south of the Yukon River. North of the Yukon river can
expect up to one inch of snow. In addition may see some blowing
snow with some reduced visibilities along the Alaska Range passes,
should not be much significance for any type of advisories but
could have reduced visibilities at times. Once the snow tapers off
and skies generally begin to clear, temperatures will get colder
across the Central and Eastern Interior beginning Sunday morning.
Expect the coldest temperatures across Central Interior by Monday
morning with lows of 25 to 35 below zero and Eastern Interior 30
to 40 below zero by Tuesday morning.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...A strong winter storm will
move to the West Coast Wednesday bringing another round of wind,
snow, and potential for blizzard conditions over much of the West
Coast before the front moves inland Thursday. Models currently
indicating potential for a heavy snow event in the Interior
Wednesday night through Friday morning that we will be watching
closely through the weekend.
