Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong pressure gradient continues along the Eastern Arctic coast
producing areas of reduced visibility in blowing snow west
of Barrow. A shortwave moves across the Interior Thursday night
and Friday, bringing a strong northeast gradient. Higher summits
along the Dalton and Steese will see some blowing and drifting
snow. This front will eventually move inland bringing a better
chance for snow north of the Tanana Valley on Friday.

&&

.DISCUSSION...The models differ slightly with the system that
will bring snow to the Interior on Friday. The NAM is much more
enthusiastic on bringing in snow while the GFS mainly keeps the
snow north and east of Fairbanks. The ECMWF and the Canadian are
more middle of the road. We are leaning towards the NAM for winds
and blended solution for the POPs.

Central and Eastern Interior...
The wind advisory for the Eastern Alaska range has been cancelled.
Winds will increase again in the range Friday night and into
Saturday. Possible wind warnings may be needed for Saturday. A
shortwave moves across the Interior Thursday night and Friday,
bringing a strong northeast gradient. Northeast winds gusting
to 40 mph are possible and higher summits along the Dalton and
Elliott highways will see some blowing and drifting snow with
reduced visibility to less than one mile at times. Winter weather
advisories are currently out for the summits north of Fairbanks.
Snow is still expected for Friday with the highest POPs north and
east of Fairbanks. Snow accumulations around 2 to 3 inches
expected east of Fairbanks.

North Slope and Brooks Range...Blowing snow and low visibility
will persist along the western Arctic Coast, especially near
Point Lay, through Friday afternoon. Visibility has improved above
one quarter mile so we downgraded the blizzard warning to a winter
weather advisory.
Thursday night, we expect northerly gap winds to pick up in the
western Brooks Range. Easterly winds will also pick up again on
Thursday night as high pressure builds over the Arctic. Chances
for snow will increase on Friday night a front approaches from the
south.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Winds will ramp up near Point Hope and along the Bering Strait
Friday morning into Saturday. Blowing snow and low visibility is
possible in those areas. Winter weather advisories have been
issued. There is a another chance of snow on Friday as a front
moves north over the area; however, the models still disagree on
the exact details of this system at the moment.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
The extended period begins on Saturday evening with the area under
a southerly flow pattern. Both the GFS and the ECMWF both show that
a stronger shortwave will move north along the coast Sunday night
and Monday. A shortwave moving in from the southwest could bring
another chance of snow for the Interior on Tuesday.
