Area forecast discussion, Jan 13, 3:47 PM AKST, 12 hours 18 minutes before
Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 347 PM AKST Wed Jan 13 2021 ..SYNOPSIS... Gusty winds and blowing snow will continue along the Chukchi Sea Coast into the weekend. Gusty northeasterly winds will develop over summits north of Fairbanks on Thursday bringing some blowing snow. A system moving north over the Interior will bring chances for snow to the Interior on Friday. && .DISCUSSION... The 13/12 UTC models generally initialized well when compared when compared to observational data. The models differ on the details of the system that will bring snow to the Interior on Friday. The NAM is much more enthusiastic on bringing in snow while the GFS mainly keeps the snow north of Fairbanks. The ECMWF and the Canadian are more middle of the road. We will take a more middle of the road approach with our PoP forecast. Aloft, at 500 mb, a ridge currently stretches from western Canada into the eastern Interior, while a trough currently stretches from a low in eastern Russia to the west coast of Alaksa. A 504 dam low currently in the north Pacific will move north to be over Kodiak Island by Thursday evening. This low will then move to the northwest and will be over the Yukon Delta by Friday afternoon before moving into the Bering Sea by Friday evening. Central and Eastern Interior... Gusty southerly gap winds are expected to develop in the Alaska Range this evening and will persist into Thursday morning. The ongoing Wind Advisory looks to be in good shape. The gap winds will diminish by late Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon, we expect gusty easterly Tanana Valley Jet winds to develop near Delta Junction and gusty northeasterly winds will develop over the higher terrain north of Fairbanks. Visibility will be reduced at times over highway summits north of Fairbanks Thursday night. A Winter Weather Advisory is being posted for zones 219, 220 and 221 in anticipation of the gusty winds and blowing snow Thursday night. On Friday, a system will bring snow as it moves north through the Interior. The models differ on how they handle this situation with the NAM being much more enthusiastic about bringing snow into Fairbanks. We went with a middle of the road solution that kept the likely PoPs north of Fairbanks, but still kept chance PoPs over Fairbanks. North Slope and Brooks Range... Winds along the Beaufort Sea Coast will continue to dissipate evening as the area of high pressure in the Arctic pushes west. As as a result of winds decreasing along the Beaufort Sea Coast the visibility has improved. Earlier this afternoon we got rid of the lingering warnings and advisories along eastern Arctic Coast. Blizzard conditions are expected to persist along the western Arctic Coast, especially near Point Lay, through Thursday evening. Thursday night, we expect northerly gap winds to pick up in the western Brooks Range. Easterly winds will also pick up again on Thursday night as high pressure builds over the Arctic. We aren't expecting any precipitation through Friday. Chances for snow will increase on Friday night a front approaches from the south. West Coast and Western Interior... A shortwave will bring light snow to the Seward Peninsula this evening. Any accumulation is expected to be light. Another shortwave will move from south to north over the West Coast and Western Interior tonight and tomorrow bringing additional chances for snowfall; however, any snowfall is expected to be light. There is a better chance of snow on Friday as a front moves north over the area; however, the models still disagree on the exact details of this system at the moment. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. Extended Forecast Days 4-7... The extended period begins on Saturday evening with the area under a southerly flow pattern. Both the GFS and the ECMWF both show that a stronger shortwave will move north along the coast Sunday night and Monday. The models are also hinting at a front moving from southeast to northwest across the forecast area Tuesday night and Wednesday bringing snow. Thereafter, model agreement decreases. && .AFG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... Wind Advisory for AKZ226. Blizzard Warning for AKZ201. Winter Weather Advisory for AKZ219-AKZ220-AKZ221. Gale Warning for PKZ225-PKZ230. Brisk Wind Advisory for PKZ235-PKZ240. && JAN 21
