High pressure over the Chukchi Sea, Bering Strait, and Eastern 
Bering Sea will weaken slightly through Saturday. Low pressure 
moving into the western Bering Sea on Friday will push a weather 
front into the Yukon Delta on Saturday.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...A trough extending southwest from a weak low in the
McKenzie Delta to a strong low currently Just south of Middleton
Island will bring some light snow in the eastern Arctic, and
light snow in the Interior today and tonight. Snow accumulations
of around an inch are expected over the Central and Eastern
Interior through Friday morning, then clearing and cold. Cold wind
chill and blowing snow in the Arctic and on the West Coast as the
pool of cold arctic air is pulled south over the area today and
will be over the state through Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...
Models...the 08/00z model suite initialized well against the 00z
surface analysis and verified well against the 06z surface
analysis and continues to demonstrate good run to run continuity
and minimal spread on feature location, track and strength from
model family to model family. Spread remain reasonable into the
weekend before considerable spread is displayed in model solutions
early next week. Current forecast is on track and only minor edits
were made to this morning's forecast package.

Aloft at 500 hpa, a very cold 492 dam low currently positioned
just south and east of Point Barrow will continue to push to the
south and east today and will be located over Fairbanks Friday
morning. The deep upper level trough associated with the low will
continue to push slowly east to near the Canadian border Friday as
an upper level ridge builds into the Eastern Bering Sea and
Western Alaska on Saturday. An upper level low pushes east into
the Central Bering Sea on Sunday as the upper level ridge builds
east over the Central and Eastern Interior. A pattern shift begins
to evolve on Monday as the upper level ridge builds over the
AlCan border and a strong upper level longwave trough develops
over the Bering Sea. Tuesday will see broad southerly flow over
much of Northern Alaska and will usher in more seasonal
temperatures over much of the area especially the Central and
Eastern Interior.

On the Surface, a trough extending south and west from a weak low
in McKenzie Delta to a deep low in near Middleton Island will
produce light snow over the Central and Eastern Interior. Strong
northerly winds are expected to develop this afternoon and
continue into Friday through the Alaska Range Passes and combined
with light falling snow will produce low visibility in blowing
snow as well as very low wind chill values. Northwest winds are
expected to develop this afternoon in the Upper Tanana Valley
along with falling snow and very cold wind chill values. Winter
Weather Advisories have been issued for these areas. Along the
Western Arctic Coast as well as the West Coast and Western
Interior gusty north to northwest winds combined with very cold
temperatures for April will continue to produce very low wind
chill values. Wind Chill advisories and Winter Weather Advisories
have also been issued for these areas into Thursday evening and
FRiday morning. Strong winds combined with low temperatures
continue to produce very low wind chill values as well as areas of
blowing snow with reduced visibility in the Eastern Brooks Range
this morning and these conditions are expected to continue into
Friday morning. Winter Weather Advisories have been issued for
these areas.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Patchy stratus moving around the
low near Utqiagvik will continue to bring some flurries and low
ceilings especially over the Eastern North Slope this morning
with some clearing expected this afternoon. Winds generally
southwest to northwest at 5 to 15 mph with slightly stronger winds
east of Deadhorse. Temperatures will continue to fall today.

West Coast and Western Interior...Clearing and cooling with wind
chill to 50 below as the cold arctic air surges south over the
area. Generally west to north winds at 5 to 20 mph. Winter
Weather Advisories remain in effect through Thursday evening.
Temperatures will continue to fall today.

Central and Eastern Interior...Mostly cloudy today with some
light snow expected into Friday, then clearing and much colder
for Saturday. Near record lows possible Saturday, then warming
starting Sunday. Snowfall will be generally less than an inch.
Winds light and variable, but will increase some from the
northeast over the summits Friday.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...A storm in the Bering Sea and
another moving into the Gulf of Alaska will push snow into the
forecast area through Wednesday. A pattern change early next week
will bring seasonal temperatures to much of the Central and
Eastern Interior with highs in the 30s and 40s, and lows in the
teens and 20s above.
