.SYNOPSIS FOR NORTHWEST COAST...
The 984 mb low that was near St Lawrence Island yesterday has 
moved over Kotzebue this morning at 995 mb, and a 998 mb low has 
developed in Norton Sound. High pressure will move over the 
Eastern Bering Sea extending N from the Pribilofs over the Gulf 
of Anadyr to a 1027 mb high in Chukotka. A 1011 mb low will move 
into the Northern Bering Sea Wed morning. Wed the high over 
Chukotka will move to the Gulf of Anadyr at 1025 mb with high 
pressure extending SE over Nunivak Island and Bristol Bay, and 
the low in the Bering Sea will dive S over the Pribilofs at 1014 
mb.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Snow and lots of it continues to fall over most of the West
Coast, the Western Interior and the Central Interior to the north
and West of Fairbanks. Snowfall amounts will vary significantly
across the state over the next 24 to 36 hours, see ongoing
Warnings and Advisories that have been issued and remain in effect
at www.weather.gov.fairbanks. Winds will pick up again this
evening through the Bering Strait and on the Arctic Coast. North
winds 25 to 35 mph and gusty through the Bering Strait will
produce Blizzard conditions on the Bering Strait Coast and
Diomede, while east winds at 15 to 30 mph on the Arctic Coast will
produce blowing and drifting snow that may impact travel.

.DISCUSSION...
Models...The 29/12z model suite initialized well against the 12z
surface analysis and verified well against the 18z surface
analysis. Model continuity from both run to run as well as from
model family to model family remains good through the short term
and into the mid range. Model spread increases dramatically by the
end of the week on the track and strength of another deep low
pressure system that pushes east into the Central Bering Sea on
Friday.

Aloft at 500 hpa, a broad upper level low pressure trough remains
in place north of Alaska while a broad upper level ridge remains
in place to the south of Alaska resulting in a very progressive
west to southwest flow aloft over much of northern Alaska. Several
shortwaves are embedded in the the strong west of southwest flow
and will bring periods of snow and winds to northern Alaska as
they pass through the area. Temperatures at 850 hpa currently
around 8 below this afternoon will drop rapidly to around 22 below
over Fairbanks later in the week as the upper level low passes to
the east. This will result in a downward trend in temperatures
through the week with surface hi temperatures in Fairbanks dropping
from the low 30s this afternoon to the teens by Thursday and
Friday. Valley temperatures will again be dropping to the single
digits below zero by the end of the week in the Fairbanks area.

Surface...Low pressure associated with the 992 mb low currently
near Nome continues to push east across the state with a 1027 mb
high in the Central Beaufort Sea moving west. Leeside troughing
has developed north of the Alaska and Brooks Ranges with a fairly
tight gradient developing across the ranges. With the high in the
Arctic moving west and low pressure continuing to push east across
the state a tight pressure gradient is also developing over the
Arctic Coast. The 992 mb low near Nome will continue to push east
into the Western Interior tonight and will be located near Ambler
as a 1000 mb low Tuesday morning. The low will then push southeast
over the Western Interior and will merge with a low in Prince
William Sound on Wednesday morning. A trough of low pressure will
linger over the Central and Eastern Interior near Fairbanks
Thursday as the low in the Gulf slowly weakens and pushes
southeast on Friday. Another deep low pushes east out of the
Western Bering Sea on Thursday night and Friday and will bring a
strong front onto the West Coast on Thursday night and Friday
and will bring another round of snow, blowing snow and strong
winds to the West Coast and the Western Interior on Friday.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...East winds continue to increase
along and continue to produce blowing and drifting snow reducing
visibility. Lighter winds are found inland. Cloudy skies will
prevail with a chance of snow tonight along the coast, while in
the Brooks Range light snow will continue with up to 3 inches of
accumulation. Temperatures warmer.

West Coast and Western Interior...Winds will be diminishing for
most areas as the low moves inland tonight, however north winds
will develop in the Chukchi Sea and Bering Strait as the low
passes to the east and will produce Blizzard Conditions on
Diomede, and the Bering Strait Coast starting this evening through
Tuesday. While winds diminish in the remainder of the area, the
snow will continue with additional accumulations of 2 to 10
inches. Heaviest snowfall will be in the upslope areas of the
Nulato Hills, Bendeleben Mountains, Western Alaska Range, Lower
Koyukuk Basin, and Western Brooks Range. Rain that has mixed with
the snow in the Lower YK Delta will change back to snow later this
evening. Cooler temperatures will be wrapping around the low into
the area tonight. Snow will continue well into Tuesday before it
tapers off, and may not taper off in the inland areas until
Wednesday morning.

Central and Eastern Interior...Snow continues across much of the
Interior with heavy snow expected to continue west and north of
Fairbanks. Heaviest snowfall will be in the Ray and White
Mountains to the north and the hills from Murphy Dome west.
Additional snowfall in those areas is expect to be in the 3 to 5
inch range. Fairbanks and vicinity will receive another 1 to 3
inches with the heaviest snowfall occuring North and West of
Fairbanks. From North Pole southeast snowfall amounts will be
around an inch or less. Snow will become light Tuesday, but is
expected to continue into Wednesday. Temperatures will be cooling
later in the week.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...High pressure will move from
the west coast across the state as a strong low moves south of the
Bering Strait Thursday night and Friday bringing snow to the Lower
Yukon Delta, the Upper Kuskokwim Valley and the Western Alaska
Range. As the low moves into the southwest mainland snow will move
into the Interior south of the Yukon River Saturday with snow
continuing through the weekend as the low moves to northern
British Columbia. The Arctic will see some lingering flurries late
in the week, then clearing Saturday. A low developing in the
Arctic will send a front to the Arctic Coast Sunday with some
light snow.
