Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 338 PM AKDT Sun Mar 28 2021 .SYNOPSIS... The active weather pattern for northern Alaska will continue through midweek as a series of shortwaves rotate through the upper flow. A strong low is moving across the Bering Sea pushing a front across the West Coast this afternoon. This storm is bringing gusty winds, blowing snow, heavy snow, and localized blizzard conditions. Snow will mix with rain in the Lower Yukon Delta this afternoon before changing back to snow later this evening. Snow will spread eastward across the Interior tonight into Wednesday, with heavy snow expected for areas north and west of Fairbanks. && .DISCUSSION... Models... The 28/12Z model solutions initialized well overall against the 12Z and 18Z surface obs, with the exception of along the eastern Beaufort Sea coast where the pressure gradient was tighter, resulting in stronger winds than what guidance indicated. Differences remain in QPF amounts and placement, especially over the Interior. Opted to go with a general model blend for QPF to capture the spread. Despite differences in QPF, all solutions point to a heavy snow event. Models remain in good agreement with major features and the overall pattern through midweek. Upper Levels and Analysis... Ridging has built in across mainland Alaska while a 510 dam upper low approaches the central Bering Sea. This low will lift northeast tonight to be centered over St Lawrence Island by early Monday morning and over the Seward Peninsula Monday afternoon, sliding eastward Monday night to be near Selawik by Tuesday morning. As the low lifts northeast, several shortwaves will rotate through the flow, helping to deepen the trough across the Bering and shunting the ridge to the southeast. The trough will transit the Bering and move across the West Coast by Tuesday afternoon and into the Interior by Wednesday. Central and Eastern Interior... Snow will move into the central Interior this evening and overnight spreading eastward Monday. Periods of heavy snow are expected for areas north and west of Fairbanks. The current forecast paints a tight gradient in regards to snow amounts. If the system moves north or south, then snowfall amounts could change drastically. Near Fairbanks, the highest snowfall amounts are expected in the Ray and White Mountains to the north and the hills from Murphy Dome west. Fairbanks and vicinity currently forecast to receive 4 to 6 inches of snow, up 8 inches of snow in the hills just to the north and in the Chena River basin, while areas from North Pole to Salcha are looking at 1 to 3 inches. 8 to 12 inches of snow are expected along the Dalton Highway. West of the Dalton Highway, snow amounts will be in the 12 to 18 inch range, with locally higher amounts in the favored upslope areas. Snow will become light on Tuesday and taper off Tuesday night into Wednesday. In the hills to the north of Fairbanks, the Nenana Hills, and summits on the Dalton, winds will increase, resulting in blowing and drifting snow, making travel difficult. In the Alaska Range passes, south winds increase tonight, with gusts to 55 mph expected in passes in the Eastern Alaska Range. From Black Rapids south, heavy snow is expected, with snowfall totals of 6 to 12 inches. Temperatures warm Monday and Tuesday. West Coast and Western Interior... A strong low over the Bering Sea continues northeast towards the West Coast pushing a series of fronts across the region. South to southeast winds have increased along the coast today into the 25 to 40 mph range with gusts to 50 mph possible through this evening south of Kivalina. This is causing blizzard to near blizzard conditions. Winds will diminish overnight and become northerly and gusty through the Bering Strait Monday and Monday night as the low moves onshore. Heavy snow will accompany the fronts and spread eastward across the western Interior. Over a foot of snow is expected in the Nulato Hills, Bendeleben Mountains, Western Alaska Range and the Lower Koyukuk Basin. Highest snow amounts are expected in the favored upslope areas. Snow will begin to taper off from the west Tuesday evening but continue into Wednesday across the Interior. Temperatures warm through Monday before cooling slightly Tuesday and more so Wednesday as colder air moves in. North Slope and Brooks Range... Winds have largely shifted to the east along the Arctic Coast this afternoon. As low pressure develops north of the Brooks Range, the winds will increase into the 15 to 20 mph range by this evening and into the 20 to 30 mph range by Monday afternoon. This will create areas of blowing and drifting snow along the coast, as well as the potential for windchills of near 50 below. Winter Weather Advisories may be needed along the Arctic Coast for blowing snow Monday night. Extended the windchill advisories for zones 201, 203, and 204 through 6 am Monday due to increasing winds. Gusty southerly winds in the Brooks Range passes tonight will cause blowing and drifting snow and may impact travel through the Dalton Highway passes. These winds will diminish Monday. Snow spreads north of the Brooks Range Monday night and Tuesday as a weather front moves north. Snow accumulations will generally be less than three inches. Temperatures warm through Tuesday.
