Sea forecasts represent the average of the highest one- third of the combined wind-wave and swell height. PKZ298-291415- 239 PM AKDT Sun Mar 28 2021 .SYNOPSIS FOR ARCTIC COAST... A 1032 mb is high in the Central Arctic Plain and a 1031 mb high in MacKenzie Bay. The high pressure will slide east with a 1026 mb high moving near Banks Island. Monday afternoon the high near Banks Island will be 400 nm north of Kaktovik at 1026 mb, while the low will be moving over the Seward Peninsula as it weakens to 992 mb. Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 524 AM AKDT Sun Mar 28 2021 SYNOPSIS...Skies have cleared over much of the forecast area overnight, but a strong low pressure system moving across the Bering Sea is sending a weather front across St Lawrence Island this morning and the front will move to the West Coast by this afternoon. Blizzard conditions are occurring on St Lawrence Island, but those conditions are expected to improve through the morning. Heavy snow will be moving to the West Coast along with some gusty winds this morning. Snow will mix with rain in the Lower Yukon Delta this afternoon, then change back to snow later this evening and continue to spread east into the Interior. Snowfall amounts will vary significantly across the state over the next 24 to 48 hours, see the Warnings and Advisories that have been issued at www.weather.gov.fairbanks. Expect some increasing clouds in the Arctic, and winds will be increasing tonight from the east to 10 to 30 mph. .DISCUSSION... Models...The 28/00Z solutions continue good run to run continuity as they remain in good agreement through the midrange. With good agreement we will not be making significant changes to the short term forecast. Most change will be minor tweaks in temperatures and snow amounts expected through Tuesday. Surface solutions initialized well with the 28/06Z surface analysis. Aloft...At 500 hpa...Broad troughing is giving way to ridging building over the state today as a low moves over the Central Bering Sea today. A shortwave is exiting the northeast part of the state this morning helping to clear the skies. The ridge axis is extends out of the North Pacific over Sand Point to Shishmaref then over the Western Arctic. The ridge axis will move to lie over Prince William Sound to Howard Pass by Monday morning. The low over the Bering Sea will move over the Dateline this afternoon, and St Lawrence Island by Monday morning at 511 dam. A shortwave associated with the low is moving over St Lawrence Island and Nunivak Island this morning and will move over the Seward Peninsula and Lower Yukon Delta this evening as it pushes into the ridge and weakens. A second wave moving around the low will move over the Dateline this afternoon, and the West Coast south of Kotzebue Sound Monday morning as the ridge over the state continues to flatten out and flow becomes zonal. Ridging will move over the Arctic today and persist into midweek. The Bering Sea low will move over the Seward Peninsula Monday afternoon at 515 dam as a third trough swings around the low over the Central Bering Sea to be over 170W Monday night. The low will weaken as the trough digs south and the trough axis will lie from Anaktuvuk Pass to Cold Bay Tuesday morning as weak ridging holds on over the Southeast mainland and Eastern Interior. By Wednesday morning a 508 dam low will develop in the trough over Cape Lisburne as the northern half retrogrades, while a 515 dam low will develop over the Copper River Basin as the southern half swings around over the Panhandle. Ridging will build over the Western Bering Sea Tuesday and move over the Eastern Bering Sea by Thursday. At 850 hpa...Temperature will be warming slightly as the -20C isotherm that lies from Eagle to Livengood will be sliding northeast, and the -10C isotherm that was well south of the forecast area yesterday will be pushing northeast and by Monday morning it will lie from McCarthy to Fairbanks to Kivalina and north of the Bering Strait. Monday night the -10C isotherm will be near the Brooks Range, but cold air wrapping around the low out west will be pulled over the Lower Yukon Delta. Surface...Low that was impacting most of the state yesterday is moving southeast into British Columbia. High pressure has built north from a 1042 mb high in the North Pacific over Bristol Bay to the Bering Strait to a 1029 mb high 150 nm northwest of Wainwright, with a 1029 mb high in the Central Arctic Plain, and a 1025 mb high in MacKenzie Bay. A 972 mb low in the Western Bering Sea will move to the Dateline later this morning. A front associated with the low will move to St Lawrence Island this morning, then to the Seward Peninsula and Lower Yukon Delta by this afternoon as the low moves near St Matthew Island at 982 mb. Low pressure will continue to push across the state with leeside troughing developing north of the ranges. High pressure will continue to hold on over the Copper River Basin and the Upper Yukon Flats as the low moves over St Lawrence Island Monday morning at 987 mb. High pressure will persist across the Central Arctic with a 1026 mb high near Banks Island. By Monday afternoon the high near Banks Island will be 400 nm north of Kaktovik at 1026 mb, while the low will be moving over the Seward Peninsula as it weakens to 992 mb. The low will slowly move into the Upper Kobuk by Tuesday afternoon at 1000 mb, while the high in the Arctic will slide west to 300 nm north of Oliktok Point. A 1005 mb low will develop in the Gulf of Alaska Tuesday afternoon. High pressure will move over the Western Bering Sea Monday night and the Eastern Bering Sea and the Chukotsk Peninsula by Tuesday evening. Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Increasing clouds from the west today and tonight as the low moves over the West Coast. Winds will swing around from the east and increase as high pressure remains offshore and low pressure pushes in over mainland Alaska. Winds will increase to 10 to 30 mph along the coast with south winds in the Brooks Range passes to 25 mph. Light snow expected in the Brooks Range and the Plains with up to 3 inches possible. Blowing and drifting snow may impact travel through the Dalton High passes. Temperatures warming. West Coast and Western Interior...Blizzard conditions on St Lawrence Island already and the snow and winds are spreading to the West Coast. Improving conditions on St Lawrence Island later this morning, while conditions will continue to deteriorate in Norton Sound and the Lower Yukon Delta this morning, and Kotzebue Sound and the interior later today. Snowfall will be heavy at times will well over a foot of snow expected in the Nulato Hills, Bendeleben Mountains, Western Alaska Range, and Lower Koyukuk Basin. Strong winds will create Blizzard or near Blizzard conditions making travel difficult. Winds will be gusting to around 40 mph from Kotzebue south along the coast. Temperatures warmer today with a chance of rain mixing with the snow in the Lower Yukon Delta this afternoon. Snow will continue well into Tuesday before it tapers off, and may not taper off in the inland areas until Wednesday morning. Central and Eastern Interior...Tricky forecast for the Fairbanks area. It currently looks like the heavy snow will be west and north of Fairbanks with the Ray and White Mountains to the north and the hills from Murphy Dome west taking the brunt of it with 6 to 12 inches expected. Fairbanks and vicinity currently look to be spared with 2 to 4 inches in the Valley, and up to 6 inches in the hills just to the north, and in the Chena River Basin. The winds will pick up a bit in the hills to the north of Fairbanks, and in the Nenana Hills, tonight making travel difficult with blowing and drifting snow. Fairbanks remains under a Winter Storm Watch as the area of heavy snow may still move into the area if conditions change. Snow will become light Tuesday, but is expected to continue into Wednesday. Temperatures will be slightly warmer the next couple days. Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None. Strong southeast to south winds have moved into the Eastern Bering Sea, and storm surge associated with the low will push under the sea ice through Monday. Water is expected to be pushed up on the ice from the Lower Yukon Delta Coast to the Bering Strait Coast, including Norton Sound. Residents should be cautious if venturing out on the ice.
