Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Relatively warm temperatures are expected to persist into the
weekend across the Interior. Gusty winds will also be an issue at
times in the Interior through the weekend, especially near the
Alsaka Range and in the Tanana Valley near Delta Junction. The
West Coast and Western Interior will see light snow at times into
Saturday. Breezy northerly winds are expected to develop along the
West Coast on Sunday and will continue into early next week. The
North Slope will be relatively quiet through Sunday, with chances
for snow increasing on Sunday night.

.DISCUSSION...
The 08/12 UTC model suite initialized well when compared to
observational data. The models are in good agreement with the
overall synoptic scale pattern out through early next week.

Aloft, at 500 mb, we are currently in a southerly flow pattern
over much of the area, with a ridge over western Canada an a 492
dam low over the western Aleutians. A pair of shortwaves in the
southerly flow that will move north over the area tonight and
Saturday. The low that is currently over the Aleutians will push
east into the Gulf of Alaska by Sunday. This will help to push the
ridge to the northwest, stretching across the northern Interior
and the North Slope.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Southerly gap winds are expected to develop again tonight in the
Alaska Range. With the afternoon forecast package we opted to
change the High Wind Watch that was out for the eastern Alaska
Range to a Wind Advisory with gusts up to 65 mph expected. The
gap winds in the Alaska Range will die back off Saturday morning,
with another round expected for Sunday night. Easterly Tanana
Valley Jet winds with gusts up to 45 mph are expected to continue
near Delta Junction through tonight. The winds near Delta will die
down somewhat on Saturday, but will remain easterly. Elsewhere,
the southerly flow pattern will keep temperatures above normal
into the weekend, with a strong inversion persisting over
Fairbanks. The far northern Interior could see a few snow flakes
this evening; however, no accumulation is expected. A weak
easterly wave will bring chances for some light snow to the
eastern Interior late Saturday and the northern Interior on Sunday;
however, again, no accumulation is expected.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Light snow will continue from Kotzebue Sound north this evening,
with up to an additional expected. Another shortwave will move
over the area on Saturday bringing additional chances for light
snow. The pressure gradient really tightens along he coast on
Saturday evening, which will cause northerly winds to increase
along the coast. The strongest winds look to remain mainly
offshore, with gale force winds expected from the Bering Strait
to St. Lawrence Island. The gusty winds look to persist into early
next week.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Light snow will continue this evening over the northwest Arctic
this evening before tapering off overnight. Up to an additional
inch of accumulation is expected through the morning. A brief
period of gusty east winds are expected along the eastern Arctic
Coast this evening, possibly causing reductions in visibility due
to blowing snow. Relatively quiet weather is expected for
Saturday and Sunday with with periods of fog and status. Sunday
night the pressure gradient increase across the Brooks Range
causing northerly gap winds to increase. Chances for snow increase
on Sunday night and Monday mainly for areas east of Utqiagvik.

Extended Forecast Days 4-7...
The extended period doesn't look to exciting for our forecast
area, with much of the active weather remaining to our south. The
flow over the next week will mostly be southerly, helping to keep
temperatures at or above climatological normal values. The pattern
also looks for the most part, relatively dry.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.
