.SYNOPSIS FOR ARCTIC COAST...
A 988 mb low in the Gulf of Anadyr will move over the Bering 
Strait and weaken to 1006 mb by Mon afternoon, leaving a broad 
area of low pressure over the Chukchi Sea through Tue. A 1036 mb 
high over the Canadian Archipelago will gradually drift west over
the Arctic Ocean through Tue.

Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...
Localized blizzard conditions and strong winds along the west
coast from the Yukon Delta north to Cape Lisburne will start to
diminish tonight and into Sunday. Clear skies and another very
cold night is in store for the eastern half of the Interior,
while clouds, areas of light snow, and warmer air will push inland
over the western half of the state. Winds will be picking up
tonight across the forecast area, especially over higher terrain
and through the Brooks and Alaska Range passes. This will result
in some blowing snow impacting visibility along the Dalton
Highway.

.DISCUSSION...
Models are generally in good agreement the next few days with the
overall synoptic scale pattern across the northern Alaska. A
narrow ridge of high pressure aloft extending from the Gulf of
Alaska to the Arctic Coast will get squeezed in half by two
opposing lows, one that is over the Yukon Territory and the other
over the Bering Sea. These two upper lows will merge into an
elongated trough across mainland Alaska with high pressure
persisting over the high Arctic.

There are some subtle differences in eastern extent of snowfall
as a weakening front along the west coast moves inland. The NAM is
the most aggressive bringing some light snow as far east as
Fairbanks by Monday morning. We went with a blend for the
precipitation extend across the Interior to introduce chances for
light snow over the central and eastern Interior.

Central and Eastern Interior...
Clear and cold with temperatures again tonight dipping to 20 to 40
below in valleys, with the coldest readings over the Yukon Flats
and far eastern Interior. Increasing northeast wind gusts from 25
to 40 mph over summits will result in low visibility in blowing
snow. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect over higher
terrain along the Dalton Highway north of the Yukon River through
Sunday. Elsewhere, east winds associated with a Tanana Valley jet
will develop near Delta Junction along with southerly gap winds
through the Brooks and Alaska Range passes. Some light snow will
push as far east as Tanana on Sunday and then to Fairbanks on
Monday.

North Slope and Brooks Range...
Strong winds and low visibility in blowing snow west of Point Lay
will gradually diminish tonight. Elsehwere, southerly gap winds
gusting to 40 mph will increase through the Brooks Range passes
and persist into Sunday evening. This will result in areas of
reduced visibility in blowing snow, including the Dalton Highway
on the north side of Atigun Pass. Otherwise, east winds 15 to 20
kt are expected along the coast except a bit stronger near Barter
Island.

West Coast and Western Interior...
Blizzard conditions continue from Saint Lawrence Island through
the Bering Strait. Visibility in blowing snow is not getting as
low as expected at the moment over the Yukon Delta, the southern
Seward Peninsula at Nome, or further north in Kotzebue Sound. We
are still thinking the visibility will drop as snowfall moves
onshore later this afternoon and this evening. So we have opted to
keep the Blizzard Warning for the Yukon Delta and Winter Weather
Advisory for the southern Seward Pen and Koztebue Sound. The
weather front bringing the strong winds and blowing snow will
continue to weaken and move inland on Sunday with improving
conditions along the coast.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...There is some spread in model
solutions next week but the trend is looking for relatively quiet
conditions across the forecast area with temperatures running a
little cooler than normal for mid-March.
