Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 159 PM AKST Thu Mar 11 2021 corrected hazards SYNOPSIS...Front has moved into the Eastern Interior and will continue to move east as skies clear in the Central and Eastern Interior tonight. Arctic will be clearing this evening, then remain mostly clear with just some patches of stratus floating around the next couple days. A strong front will move to the West Coast Friday night and Winter Storm Watches have been issued for the outer coastal areas and St Lawrence Island. .DISCUSSION... Models...The 11/12Z solutions are in good agreement on the evolution of the ridging building over the state as the upper level trough gets kicked to the east. Solutions are also handling the next front approaching the West Coast well as they keep the precipitation just offshore as the front weakens. Solutions also capture the cooling temperatures well so will be nudging the database to a blend to maintain continuity. GFS winds are 5 to 10 kt lighter than the other solutions, so will lean toward the stronger solutions as the front out west moves into the Eastern Bering Sea. Aloft...At 500 hpa...Trough over the state with the associated 462 dam low northwest of the New Siberian Island and the trough extending over the high Arctic to the Northern Beaufort Sea, then southwest across the Arctic over Utqiagvik to Huslia to Iliamna this afternoon. The trough will slowly work its way east tonight and will be over the Eastern Arctic then south over Nuiqsut to Manley Hot Springs to Skwentna. A bubble 519 dam high will develop over the AlCan Border near Eagle tonight slowing the progress of the trough. A 514 dam low will develop in the base of the trough over the Gulf of Alaska, then as the high over the AlCan merges with the ridging building over the West Coast the low will be cutoff and move over Yakutat Friday morning. By Friday afternoon The trough will be over the AlCan Border north of Eagle, and the low that developed to the south will be over the Eastern Gulf of Alaska at 518 dam. Ridging over the West Coast will lie from the North Pacific over Unimak Island to Bethel to Point Lay and over 160W. A 501 dam low will move over the southern Kamchatka Peninsula Friday morning and over the Western Bering Sea by Friday afternoon. Saturday morning the ridging will be over the middle of the state lying from the North Pacific over Sand Point to Galena to Oliktok Point and north over 150W. At 850 hpa...-20C isotherm lies over the AlCan south to the Alaska Range then southwest to Iliamna, northwest to St Lawrence Island and north over the Bering Strait. As the systems progress east the -20C isotherm will move to lie south of the Alaska Range to Sparrevohn, then north of McGrath to Utqiagvik. The -10C isotherm will be surging north to the Chukotsk Peninsula in advance of the front out west, and will approach the West Coast and Bering Strait Friday evening. Surface...Weather front is in the Eastern Interior with a 1016 mb low in the Eastern Brook Range, and the front extending south, then southwest to a 1001 mb low in the Northern Gulf of Alaska. High pressure is building over the West Coast and Western Interior with a 1029 mb high in the central Arctic Plain, a 1031 mb high over the Seward Peninsula, and high pressure extending southwest over the Pribilofs. High pressure is also pushing east along the north slopes of the Alaska Range as a low that was in the Lower Yukon Delta this morning has moved southeast over Dillingham this afternoon. By Friday afternoon high pressure will be over most of the forecast area north of the Alaska Range with a 1043 mb high over Bettles, a 1041 mb high over Ft Yukon, and a 1040 mb high over Barter Island. A strong weather front associated with a 970 mb low near the Kamchatka Peninsula will be in the Central Bering Sea with a tight pressure gradient developing across the Eastern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea. Saturday morning high pressure will remain over the Central and Eastern Interior with a 1043 mb high over Coldfoot and a 1041 mb high in the Upper Tanana Valley. The front in the Bering Sea will be over St Lawrence and St Matthew Islands extending south along 170W as the associated low moves north into Chukotka. Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Clearing to partly cloudy across the area with some patchy stratus left behind as the front moves east. Winds less than 15 mph will be swinging around from southwest to east, then back to south and southwest by Saturday morning. Winds west of Utqiagvik will be picking up Saturday as a strong front moves to the Chukchi Sea. Temperature will continue to fall through the night, then start to rebound Friday as the winds swing back around and high pressure slides east. West Coast and Western Interior...Partly cloudy to clear with cooling temperatures through Friday morning. A strong front will move to the Dateline Friday, then into the Eastern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea Saturday. Winter Storm Watches have been issued for areas along the Coast from Nome north, and St Lawrence Island. Precipitation will generally remain over the St Lawrence Island, the Capes, and offshore as the front slowly weakens. As the front continues to weaken it will eventually move inland Saturday night spreading some snow to the Western Interior. Temperatures will continue to cool tonight, then start warming as south flow develops in advance of the strong front. Central and Eastern Interior...Some lingering flurries in the Eastern Interior, otherwise clearing tonight with temperatures continuing to fall. Generally clear skies will continue through the weekend with temperatures starting to rebound Saturday night.
