Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion

SYNOPSIS...Blizzard conditions on St Lawrence Island and the
Bering Strait Coast continue and will spread to the Chukchi Sea
Coast and the Lower Yukon Delta Coast tonight. The front will
remain offshore as it weakens through Saturday. Most of the
Interior and Arctic will remain mostly clear or just see some high
clouds through Saturday with the exception of the Northwest
Arctic Coast where winds will pick up tonight with blowing snow
developing and reducing visibility through Saturday.

.DISCUSSION...

Models...The 12/12Z solutions remain in good agreement on the
evolution of the ridging building over the state as the trough
over the Bering Sea works its way east. Solutions have slowed the
troughs progress and weaken it even further before it makes it to
the West Coast. Will be using a blend of the solutions for most
elements today and only making some minor adjustment to the
current database for the others to maintain continuity.

Aloft...At 500 hpa...Trough extends southeast from a 466 dam low
in the high arctic over the Beaufort Sea, then southwest over the
Eastern Brooks Range and Upper Yukon Flats this afternoon. Ridging
continue to build north over the West Coast and Western Interior
as it slides east. The Axis lies over Unalaska to Bethel to Point
Lay and over 160W, and will move to lie over Southern Kodiak
Island to Allakaket to Nuiqsut, the northeast over the Beaufort
Sea by Saturday afternoon. A 518 dam low 200 nm southwest of
Yakutat will move to 150 nm southeast of Yakutat at 516 dam
Saturday afternoon. Broad troughing over the Bering Sea is
anchored by a 497 dam low over the Northwest Bering Sea. The
primary trough will move to the Dateline Saturday morning as the
low moves north over Siberia and heights fall to 493 dam. The
trough will move to lie from the Western Gulf of Anadyr over St
Matthew Island to the Pribilofs to Nikolski by Saturday evening.
As the ridge continues to slide east a closed 534 dam high will
develop over Nuiqsut Saturday night and by Sunday morning will be
over the Central Beaufort Sea with the ridging extending southwest
over Nuiqsut to Anaktuvuk Pass to Healy to Whittier. The
troughing to the west will continue east as well with a 496 dam
low just north of the Gulf of Anadyr and the primary trough lying
over ST Lawrence Island to Cape Newenham to Cold Bay. At 850
hpa...-20C isotherm is south of the Alaska Range to Sparrevohn,
then north over McGrath to Utqiagvik, and by Saturday morning it
will be hanging on over the Eastern Interior and Eastern Brooks
Range. A pocket of -20C will hang on over the Upper Tanana Valley
through the weekend. The -10C isotherm is surging north to the
Chukotsk Peninsula and has moved over the southwest coast and
Bering Strait this afternoon. By Saturday afternoon the -10C
isotherm will push over the Western Interior to lie from Anchorage
to Denali to Ambler to Utqiagvik.

Surface...Strong weather front has moved to the Central Bering
Sea today with blizzard conditions on St Lawrence Island and the
Bering Strait Coast. High pressure over mainland Alaska with a
1042 mb high in the Upper Koyukuk Basin extends southwest to a
1043 mb high over the North Pacific. The strong front will
continue to hang out near the West Coast as it moves into a
negative tilt position from northwest to southeast just offshore
and weakens. The front will eventually move inland late Saturday
as it is falling apart and spreads some light snow to areas south
of the Bering Strait. High pressure will hang on over the Interior
and the Arctic through the weekend and into next week.

Arctic Coast and Brooks Range...Mostly clear with some patchy
stratus floating around. Satellite shows no extensive bands of
stratus offshore. High clouds associated with a front moving into
the Chukchi Sea will move over the Northwest Arctic Coast, but do
not expect any significant snowfall. Strong winds associated with
the front will push over the northwest coast with blowing snow
developing and reducing visibility so a Winter Weather Advisory
has been issued. Conditions will improve Saturday evening on the
Northwest Coast as winds diminish.

West Coast and Western Interior...Blizzard conditions on St
Lawrence Island and the Bering Strait Coast with winds gusting
around 60 mph and whiteout conditions at times. Blizzard
conditions will develop this evening on the Chukchi Sea Coast and
tonight on the Lower Yukon Delta west of Mountain Village. Blowing
snow and strong winds will also develop in Kotzebue and Norton
Sounds with visibility being reduced to one half mile at times
through Saturday evening. The front will weaken as it remains just
offshore Saturday night, then move onshore spreading some light
snow into the coastal areas and into the Western Interior as it
dissipate. Temperatures warming as south flow persists in the area
through Saturday.

Central and Eastern Interior...Mostly clear with some patchy fog
in the morning hours. Temperatures will fall into the 20s and 30s
below again tonight, then start rebounding as warm air to the west
is pushed into the area. Winds generally light and variable
through Saturday across the area, then winds becoming gusty on the
Summits of the Dalton Highway, the White Mountains, and near the
Alaska Range passes, and the Tanana Valley Jet will kick in at
Delta Junction with east winds busting to around 45 mph.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None.

Extended forecast for days 4 to 7...The Arctic will see a few
flurries, with mainly east winds 10 to 20 mph along the coast and
south winds in the Brooks Range to 15 mph. The West Coast will be
clearing as weather front in the area moves inland and dissipates
Tuesday and high pressure builds over the northeast Bering Sea.
A low moving in to the northern Gulf of Alaska will bring a chance
of snow to the southern Interior and Alaska Range Tuesday, then
some clearing. A second low will move to the northern Gulf on
Wednesday and bring a slight chance of snow to the southern
Interior and Alaska Range. Generally clear the remainder of the
week in the Central and Eastern Interior.
