* WHAT...Blizzard conditions occurring. North winds of 35 to 45 
  mph with gusts as high as 50 mph.

* WHERE...Along the Kuskokwim Delta Coast North of Toksook Bay.

* WHEN...Until 6 AM AKST Monday.

* IMPACTS...The cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could 
  cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Current observations across Chevak and near
  the Kuskokwim Delta Coast are showing winds gusting as high as
  50 mph this morning with 1/4 mile visibility. The 1/4 mile
  visibility and strong gusty winds upwards of 50 mph are expected
  to continue throughout the day and into the early morning hours
  on Monday. Conditions will gradually improve early Monday
  morning with improving visibilities but winds will remain gusty
  upwards of 20 to 30 mph throughout the day Monday.

A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are
expected or occurring. Falling and blowing snow with strong winds

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Two lows, one over the southern Gulf approaching Kodiak Island,
and a second located west of Dutch Harbor, are the two primary
features driving the weather across southern Alaska this
afternoon. Both are large features, moving towards each other and
will eventually merge together late tonight. In the meantime,
occasional blizzard conditions have been reported in Dutch Harbor
with peak wind gusts near 70 mph with heavy snow this morning.
This low has a steady supply of polar air feeding into it from the
north and northeast, with temperatures around 30 in the Pribilofs,
and within a few degrees of zero across the Kuskokwim Delta.

The Gulf low has warmer air with it and much less cold air to draw
from. Nevertheless, the return flow west of the center has lowered
visibilities in Kodiak due to snow, though temperatures have now
warmed several degrees above freezing. Precipitation is becoming
steadier and heavier across the Kenai Mountains, with a swath of
stratiform precipitation evident on Middleton Island radar
imagery. Elsewhere, little in the way of precipitation is making
it inland, but the associated cloud cover sure is, which is
keeping Southcentral relatively mild in the teens and 20s as
compared with points further west across Southwest Alaska. The 12Z
Anchorage sounding has a similar atmospheric profile as 24 hours
ago, but is significantly drier, especially in the mid-levels.

In the upper levels, a large longwave trough is in pace across the
Bering, with a piece of the North American ridge extending into
the Copper Basin. An embedded upper level low is associated with
the Aleutians surface low west of Adak, with a strong negatively-
tilted shortwave trough associated with the Gulf low across the
southern Gulf.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Model agreement remains good on the synoptic scale this afternoon
regarding the two lows merging into one, then remaining stationary
between the Shumagins and Kodiak Island through at least Monday
afternoon. Discrepancies and uncertainty pertain to any lows and
disturbances wrapping around the main low, where timing and
intensity differences are large. Since these features have a large
impact on the weather locally, confidence with those is lower.
Nonetheless a continued cloudy, warmer than normal weather pattern
with frequent precipitation along the coast, cold conditions
across interior Southwest Alaska, and frequent snow shower
activity across the Bering and Aleutians is very likely, with
confidence in that overall weather pattern high.

PANC...VFR conditions and northerly winds will persist. The winds
could become gusty at times, especially tonight.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Tuesday)...

An upper-level wave and associated surface low continues to track
northwest from the central Gulf toward the Barren Islands. As it
does, a front will move toward the Southcentral coast with
easterly winds and precipitation both on the increase. The
precipitation that began as snow for Kodiak City this morning is
transitioning to a rain/snow mix as warmer air tries to work in
from the Gulf and is expected to become all rain by later this
evening. The precipitation across the Southcentral coast will
also start this evening as all snow, but should mix with rain
along the immediate coast (Seward, Whittier, Cordova) as a
southerly flow ushers in warmer air. By Sunday morning, any mixed
precipitation should become all rain as temperatures climbs into
the mid to upper 30s. Gap winds will also be on the increase this
evening, especially along Turnagain Arm. Colder air bottled up
over the Copper River Basin will help increase northeasterly
drainage flow winds along the Matanuska Valley and through
Thompson Pass, where blowing snow is possible overnight into early
Sunday.

With the track of the low moving toward the Barren Island, winds
aloft ahead of and along the front will be easterly. The easterly
winds will help being plenty of moisture in the form of snow to
the Kenai and Chugach mountains, but will limit precipitation for
places farther inland across the Kenai Peninsula.

These features will then phase with a larger trough moving west
across the Aleutians. The re-established trough over the AKPEN
will allow multiple weaker waves to lift north over the Gulf.
Additional rounds of coastal mixed rain/snow and mountain snow
are expected late Sunday into Monday and again late Monday into
Tuesday. Interior locations will see limited precipitation due to
a southeasterly downslope flow. Gap winds will also persist as
each wave moves along the coast.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Quiet weather will continue for Southwest through this evening
with a mostly clear to partly cloudy sky. Low pressure off to the
south along the Alaska Peninsula and the eastern Aleutian Chain
will combine with higher pressure off to the northwest. This will
create a tightening pressure gradient across Southwest heading
through the remainder of the day and into the evening hours
leading to developing breezy conditions. Along with the breezy
conditions, some upper level shortwaves associated with a surface
low pressure southeast of the AKPEN will send some moisture into
Bristol Bay starting tonight. Due to the deep southeasterly flow,
the typical areas that downslope will see minimal if any
precipitation. Areas such as Dillingham, New Stuyahok, and
Koliganek west to the east facing side of the Kuskokwim Mountains
(due to upslope) will have the best chance of seeing some snow.
Most areas are expected to see upwards of an inch with higher
amounts in the mountains. With the increasing winds, blowing snow
is a concern in Dillingham as the snow is expected to be light
and fluffy with any snow that falls tonight into Sunday. As a
result, visibility may becomes as low as 1-2 miles at times. Some
moisture may make it over the mountains to bring a slight chance
of snow to the southern areas of the Kuskokwim Coast late Sunday
into early Monday. The best chance time for Bethel to see any
light snow comes Monday morning into Monday afternoon.

Winds will begin to gradually ease some on Monday as the pressure
gradient weakens over the area. Another piece of energy may bring
some more light snow to Southwest on Tuesday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A storm force low currently to the south of Nikolski will continue
to slowly move off to the south towards the North Pacific. Its
front which has been plastering Dutch Harbor all day with strong
gusty winds upwards of 55-65 mph with reductions in visibility to
1/4 mile (blizzard conditions) at times will continue to slowly
pivot over the region through this evening. Due to this, a
Special Weather Statement has been issued for Dutch Harbor through
9 PM this evening. Strong gusty winds and blizzard conditions
will slowly abate around or just after 9 PM, though gusty winds
upwards of 30-40 mph can still be expected through the overnight.

The main story behind this storm system will be the broad and cold
northerly flow across much of the Bering Sea for the next 3 days.
Cold air flowing over a relatively warm body of water will create
for an unstable atmosphere which will cause snow showers/squalls
for the next 3 days. Basically, many areas along the Aleutian
Chain and the Pribilofs can expect brief reductions in visibility
at times as any one snow shower moves through before going back up
to unrestricted visibility. Along with the cold air and the snow
showers will be small crafts across a good chunk of the Bering
with gale force winds north and east of the Pribilofs and to the
south. West of the Pribilofs, mainly small crafts are expected.
The typical bays and passes are expected to blow stronger (maybe
high end gales for gusts) than out over the open water where the
air is channeled through gaps especially Sunday through Tuesday
morning.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5...Tue through Thu)...

Gulf of Alaska: A Southwest Gulf low curves over Kodiak Island and
continues into the Alaska Peninsula for Wed. Model track and
development are inconsistent making forecast confidence low.
Easterly small craft winds and waves spread across the Gulf with
gale force gusts through Cook Inlet and Shelikof Strait through
Wed, becoming southwesterly small craft winds Thu. Gulf wave
heights start at 6-10 feet Tue, building to 14-20 feet Wed before
diminishing to 6-8 feet Thu.

Bering Sea: High pressure over the Western Aleutians and Bering
couple with a low in Southwest Alaska through Thu. Model track and
development vary, making forecast confidence fair through Thu.
Widespread northerly small craft winds and waves with local gale
force gusts push through the central and eastern Bering Tue,
diminishing Wed. Wave heights 7-10 feet except locally to 14 feet
in the Western and Eastern Aleutians Tue, diminishing Wed.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

The latest model guidance shows broad troughing over Southern
Alaska, extending across the Bering early next week with a deep
low positioned over the Gulf. Multiple embedded upper-level waves
will move across Southcentral and Southwest Alaska while the
system remains relatively stationary over the southern AKPEN.
Large scale cyclonic flow will keep cold, northerly flow across
the Bering through mid-week. This will aid in the development of
smaller polar lows moving southward across the Bering. Most of
the moisture impacts will be present across the Gulf and along the
North Gulf Coast, moving to the southeast by mid-week as the
system occludes and begins weakening. Model spread is still
relatively large. Thus, uncertainty is high for a second strong
low looking to approach the southern Gulf that could bring
another round of heavy precipitation to areas along the
north Gulf Coast, as well as high winds and seas across the Gulf.
Impacts will be very track dependent, including precipitation
type for both Southcentral and Southwest. This includes winds
across the mainland, which can induce warming, especially if
southeast flow across the mountains is able to mix with flow at
the surface.
