Semisopochnoi volcano, located 140 nm west of Adak, is currently 
active.

A 976 mb low 290 nm south of Cold Bay moves to 50 nm west of
Akhiok at 977 mb for Sat evening and then moves into Bristol Bay 
by Sun morning. Its front moves over the Alaska Peninsula through 
Sat afternoon. A 1002 mb North Kamchatka low Fri night moves to 
30 nm north of St Matthew Island at 994 mb by Sun morning.

Semisopochnoi volcano, located 140 nm west of Adak, is currently 
active.

A 969 mb low 230 nm Southeast of Chignik moves to 40 nm Northeast
of Sitkinak at 992 mb by Sun afternoon and then dissipates. A 998 
mb North Kamchatka low moves to 30 nm West of Hooper Bay at 994 mb 
through Sun afternoon and moves inland. Its front pushes into Western
Alaska through Sun afternoon. A 1002 mb Central Kamchatka low Sat 
evening moves to 170 nm Northeast of Attu at 982 mb for Mon morning.

afternoon. A 983 mb low 200 nm North of Attu moves to 70 nm South
of St George Island at 989 mb by Tue afternoon. Its front pushes 
through to Bristol Bay and over the Aleutians through Wed morning.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A broad upper level low is centered over the northern Bering
while a negatively tilted trough axis extends over Southwest
Alaska and the northern Gulf. A shortwave trough on the base of
this broad Bering low is in place south of the Aleutian Chain. An
upper level shortwave lifting over Southcentral is producing
snowfall across interior locations of Southcentral. Additionally,
lightning strikes across the Prince William Sound area have been
observed this afternoon with a favorable convective environment,
aided by midlevel cold air advection. Farther west, northerly flow
and showers persist over the majority of the Bering. The large low
that can be seen south of the Aleutian Islands is the one that
will bring the very active weather across the region this weekend.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Overall model solutions are in good agreement through the
short term. There is high confidence in the By Saturday morning,
there are some differences in the placement of the low center just
south of Kodiak Island. At this time, the GFS solution is the
farthest south while the EC is the farthest north. Additionally,
the placement and tilt of the upper level shortwave over the
western Gulf varies between the GFS and NAM. By Sunday, model
solutions depict an even greater variance, thus forecast
confidence for for the start of next week is low.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Light winds will persist with VFR conditions. Ceilings may
drop to MVFR with intermittent snow showers this evening. Winds
at the terminal are expected to remain northerly with wind shear
developing Fri afternoon and persist into Friday night.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

An active weather pattern is expected over the next couple of days
as a large storm system moves into the northern Gulf of Alaska.
The two biggest impacts from this storm system will be the winds
in Turnagain Arm, Portage Valley and the Upper Hillside and the
rain along the southern Kenai Peninsula and Prince William Sound.

As the storm system moves into the region, east-southeasterly winds
will increase Friday afternoon across Southcentral. These
Turnagain-Arm winds will increase to gale force Friday evening.
Turnagain-Arm winds will then peak Saturday morning and afternoon
before beginning to gradually ease Saturday evening. Storm force
winds with hurricane force gusts are expected in Turnagain Arm,
Portage Valley and the Upper Hillside. Due to this, a High Wind
Warning has been issued for Portage Valley, Turnagain Arm and the
Upper Hillside. The brunt of these winds are not expected to enter
the city of Anchorage as strong down-inlet flow is expected due to
the overall synoptic pattern favoring northeasterly flow in Cook
Inlet.

The other major impact will be flooding in the Anchor River and
Seward from persistent heavy rain associated with this system. An
Atmospheric River is expected along the eastern side of the low
center which will transport ample moisture from lower latitudes to
Southcentral Alaska. There is good model agreement on rainfall
amounts which leads to above average confidence in the rainfall
forecast. Areas around Seward may experience up to 8 inches of
rainfall between Friday and Monday morning. The highest rainfall
amounts will be along the windward side of the Kenai and Chugach
Mountains due to orographic enhancement. Due to the ample rainfall
expected, a Flood Watch has been issued for the Resurrection
River and other small streams near Seward from Friday afternoon
through early Monday morning. A Flood Watch has also been issued
for the Anchor River at Anchor Point from Friday afternoon through
early Monday morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...Tonight
through Saturday)...

A weak system moving northward this afternoon and into tonight
will continue to bring some snow showers to the western Alaska
Range with some light snow accumulations expected. Otherwise, expect
generally quiet and calm conditions for the rest of Southwest for
tonight into Friday before the next bigger system arrives
beginning as early as Friday afternoon for Bristol Bay. Mostly
clear to partly cloudy skies tonight will cause a good radiational
cooling situation causing temperatures to drop into the teens for
practically everywhere. Where conditions go completely calm and
clear, temperatures may drop into the single numbers as a cold air
mass remains in place. This will help to set the stage for the
incoming storm system to bring the winter weather expected.

The pattern is expected to become very meridional (highly
amplified) for Friday through the weekend. A low pressure system
currently moving along but south of the Aleutian Chain will be
accompanied by a strengthening jet stream aloft with 140+ kt
winds. This will help to further strengthen and elongate this
system as it comes northward. Therefore, expect a conglomerate of
precipitation types for Southwest Alaska through the weekend with
snow, blowing snow (visibilities to one half mile) freezing rain,
and rain all expected. There may also be some sleet in areas but
the aforementioned ones are of the most concern. Basically
everyone starts as snow even if its only for a brief time frame.
Precipitation begins to overspread Bristol Bay from southeast to
northwest Friday afternoon. This trend will continue through
Saturday until it reaches it westernmost point of the Kuskokwim
Delta Saturday morning. Warm air is expected to come in for King
Salmon and Iliamna area as well as east of Sleetmute Friday
evening/night changing any precipitation to all rain.
Southeasterly flow aloft will also cause downsloping for areas to
the lee of the Alaska/Aleutian Mountain Ranges, therefore, expect
fairly windy conditions as well. Dillingham is where thinking the
cold air at the surface will hold on long enough for a prolonged
period of icing with freezing rain expected Saturday before
changing to all rain sometime Saturday evening. As a result, a
Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for this and see for
further details.

Next, as of now expecting Aniak to remain all snow for this event
with 8 to 14 inches expected. A Winter Weather Advisory is in
effect for the Lower Kuskokwim Valley Friday evening through
Sunday morning. Uncertainty remains as to how far west the warm
air gets and therefore, amounts are uncertain for Aniak. More cold
air will yield the higher amounts whereas more warm air will lead
to more mixing and less amounts. Also, latest guidance shows the
Kuskokwim Delta (including Bethel) receiving accumulating snow
for this event and therefore, a Special Weather Statement has been
issued.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 to 3...Tonight
through Saturday)...

A low pressure system is currently moving across the Aleutian
Chain to the south which will continue moving eastward to
somewhere south of Chignik by Friday night. This system is
expected to bring storm force winds to the coastal waters south of
the Eastern Aleutians and southern Alaska Peninsula Friday and
Friday night. Expect gusts as high as 60 kts out of bays and
passes. Also, wave heights of 12 to 18 feet north of the Aleutian
Chain and AKpen Friday/Friday night with 18 to 25 ft south of the
Aleutian Chain/AKpen coastal waters.

Otherwise, cold air flowing over much of the Bering over the next
few days will cause some instability as it moves over the
relatively warm water surface. Combined with some weak upper level
shortwaves occasionally moving across the Bering some snow
showers are possible. Freezing spray is also expected for the
marine waters around Saint Matthew Island and along the Kuskokwim
Delta Coasts.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Aleutians/Bering...A broad area of low pressure over the Bering
through Tuesday. Gusty winds with areas of Westerly gales
associated with a front moving across the Bering through Tuesday.
Northerly gales with the rear flank of the Gulf low linger over
the Eastern Bering and Bristol Bay, diminishing. Seas to 18 feet,
subsiding. Forecast confidence is moderate.

Gulf of Alaska...A strong nearly stationary low over the Western
Gulf brings widespread gales over the Gulf, diminishing Monday.
Seas to 25 feet, subsiding. An area of gales moves over the
Northern Gulf and North Gulf Coast for Tuesday, as the low center
moves towards Kodiak Island. Seas to 22 feet, subsiding.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Monday through Thursday)...

Solutions struggled quite a bit with the placement of the lows,
the distribution of rain and mixed rain/snow, and wind speed for
the long term. However, GFS, GEM and ECMWF highlighted the
potential for increased precipitation and winds over Pribilof
Islands, Southwest, Kodiak Island, Kenai Peninsula, Anchorage
Bowl and Prince William Sound in response to two separate lows and
fronts over the Gulf and Bering Sea in the coming days. Over the
Gulf, a strong North Pacific low and its associated front will
usher strong winds and higher gusts across the western Gulf
through Prince William Sound beginning Mon afternoon into Tue
evening. Interestingly, a ridge over the State could weaken the
expansion of clouds and rain over Southcentral on Mon, creating
dry downsloping to the north of Anchorage Bowl and across Copper
River Basin into Mon night. Meanwhile, a developing low near the
central Aleutians Tue afternoon will build across the eastern
Bering, causing strong winds and increased precipitation across
Southwest Coast, Pribilof Islands and the Aleutian Chain into Thu
afternoon.

...ACCUMULATING SNOW EXPECTED FOR THE KUSKOKWIM DELTA FROM
EARLY SATURDAY MORNING THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING...

A low pressure system moving northward towards the southern
Alaska Peninsula over the weekend is expected to bring
accumulating snow to the area. However, uncertainty still remains
as to how much snow falls across the Kuskokwim Delta and how much
moisture is able to make it over the Kuskokwim/Kilbuck Mountains.
Previous days showed the area may not see any impacts from this
system at all but recent model guidance is showing the area seeing
some impacts from this system.

Right now it looks like a band of light to moderate snow will
overspread especially the central to eastern portions of the
Kusko Delta including Bethel Saturday morning. This band is
expected to pivot through the region throughout the day before a
system moving in from off the Bering pushes the precipitation off
to the east ending any snow Sunday morning. Therefore, a couple to
several inches of snowfall accumulation is expected from this
system. As a result of the snow, expect reduced visibilities as
low as 1 mile due to the falling snow.
