Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
The remnants of former typhoon Mindulle are located in the
northwest Bering Sea and heading toward the Gulf of Anadyr. The
upper level low associated with this system is just north of it
creating rather zonal flow along the jet stream as the jet stream
crosses the Bering Sea from west-to-east.

The front associated with the NW Bering Sea low is coming onshore
along the Y-K Delta this afternoon and will continue to progress
eastward. Weak ridging remains over Southcentral Alaska today but
this will get displaced in short order by the front in Southwest
AK.

Another plume of moisture can be seen on satellite streaming into
the western ALeutians from the west-southwest. This is associated
with the wave that will amplify into the front that reached the
Kuskokwim Delta late Tuesday night and that is referenced in the
model discussion section.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Models are in better agreement today with the front crossing
the Bering Sea and reaching the coast of the Kuskokwim Delta.
It now looks to be likely that the front will reach the Kuskokwim
Delta coast very late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning. The
key feature with this front is an upper level wave caught up in
the jet with a surface low under it. This feature will move
quickly through the Bering Sea in the tight gradient south of
former typhoon Mindulle which will be trekking across the
northern Bering Sea. This low will intensify as it crosses the
Bering and that is where the models were struggling, but it looks
like we have a very reasonable solution now.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. Ceilings may
drop below 5000 ft Tuesday afternoon due to rain moving into the
area.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 to 3: Today
through Thursday afternoon)...

Clearer skies will linger into the evening as the ridge
progresses eastward. Then, fronts extending from a low in the
Bering will bring unsettled weather as they track through
Southcentral. The first round of precipitation will begin with a
frontal passage early Tuesday morning. This front will likely
bring rain to the coasts and snow over higher terrain, with
valleys experiencing rain/snow mix before transitioning into
rain. As the first front weakens and stalls west of the Copper
River Basin, another front enters Southcentral early Wednesday
morning. This second, more robust front looks to bring localized
areas of heavier precipitation, especially over higher terrain and
in the northern Susitna Valley. While snowfall timing and amounts
remain uncertain, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect
through Broad Pass from Tuesday evening through Thursday.
Otherwise, precipitation outside of the mountains will likely fall
as rain. Precipitation will slowly subside through Thursday as
the fronts combine.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 to 3: Tonight
through Thursday)...

A front extending from a large synoptic low continuing to spin
east of the Kamchatka Peninsula is now working across Bristol Bay,
bringing gusty southerly winds and a band of mainly rain inland
over the Y-K Delta. This front will continue to move east
overnight as it weakens, initiating warm/moist advection that will
finally bring the interior Southwest out of the recent cold spell
over the next couple days. The Middle Kuskokwim Valley should
hang on to the colder air in place just long enough for a period
of snowfall late tonight. Accumulations at lower elevations
generally expected to remain under 1 inch before warming low level
temps win out and change snow over to rain for all but the high
terrain of the Alaska Range and Kuskokwim Mountains tomorrow
morning.

From Tuesday onwards, an extended period of relatively warm and
wet conditions will continue as strong southwesterly flow sets up
and brings a series of shortwaves across from southwest to
northeast. A more pronounced wave and developing surface low will
move over the Y-K Delta on Wednesday Morning, sending moderate
rainfall over nearly the entire region. Onshore winds will ramp up
as the trough moves onshore, with gusts around 40 mph likely
along the coast on Wednesday, especially around the Kuskokwim Bay
area. A shortwave ridge will move in behind this system on
Thursday and provide a brief break in the wet and windy pattern.
However, a potent low pressure moving across the Bering will keep
the break very short lived, with yet another round of strong winds
and rain approaching the Southwest coast by Thursday afternoon.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 to 3: Tonight
through Thursday)...

A large low centered just east of Kamchatka continues to be the
dominant player for sensible conditions across most of the region.
Southwesterly gale force winds will continue tonight over the
Western Bering, while a front moves inland near the AKPen and
brings mainly rain as it progresses east. An amplified trough will
eject from Kamchatka and move west into the Bering on Tuesday,
sending another round of rain and winds into the Bering and over
the Pribilofs through Tuesday night. Winds will increase to gale
force as the trough moves across the eastern Bering on Wednesday
morning before a shortwave ridge moves, allowing southwest winds
to briefly subside with rainfall ending from west to east.

The break in the weather will be very short-lived, as a potent low
pressure lifts out of the North Pacific and across the Aleutian
Chain into the western Bering on Wednesday night. Moderate to
heavy rainfall and gale to potentially storm force winds will
spread into the Kiska, Attu and Atka area late Wednesday night
into early Thursday. Gale force winds and rain will move
northeast with the low throughout the day on Thursday, with steady
rainfall overspreading the Eastern Aleutians and Pribilofs by
late Thursday morning.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Thursday through Saturday)...

Bering Sea and Aleutians: A low moving across the Aleutians and
Bering through Friday is expected to strengthen as it moves
towards the eastern Bering with high end Gales likely and storm
force winds possible especially on the south side of the low.
Expect high end Gales to continue south of the AKPEN especially
through the gaps on Friday and Saturday. Another gale force low is
expected to move towards the western Bering and Aleutians on
Saturday, however there is more uncertainty on the strength and
location of this low.

Gulf of Alaska: A Gale force low will move into the eastern Gulf
on Thursday. Thursday night and Friday a strong front enters the
Gulf with a triple point low developing along the front with Gale
force winds north of the front as the barrier jet develops across
the northern Gulf. Expect Gales across a good portion of the Gulf
Friday and Saturday. Also expect strong gap winds to develop
across the Barren Islands through Shelikof Strait.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Friday through Monday)...

Overall models are in decent agreement with the synoptic pattern
through the long term. Ensemble forecasts of the GFS are all in
fairly good agreement through Monday. The progressive pattern will
continue through the long term, however the pattern will amplify
a bit on Friday as a deepening low and cold frontal system moves
into Southwest Alaska on Friday. This will bring rain to the
eastern Aleutians, AKPEN and Southwest Alaska and strong winds to
the AKPEN and parts of Bristol Bay. This front will move into the
Gulf and Southcentral with increasing winds and rain and snow on
Friday. It's still too early to tell where the snow level will be
but some lower elevations could get snow Friday morning.
Additionally, a triple point low will develop along this front
affecting the overall strength of the winds and location of
precipitation north of the coastal mountains. Strong gap winds may
develop Friday into Saturday in the usual spots across
Southcentral and the Gulf however there is uncertainty on the
timing of this due to model differences on the location of the
low. Saturday the frontal system will weaken and move east but
rain and snow will linger across Southcentral. By Sunday a ridge
of high pressure moves across the southern mainland and Gulf of
Alaska with cooler and quieter weather. Another low and front is
expected to move into the Bering on Sunday with increasing winds
and rain for the Aleutians and Bering. This low will track across
the Bering with rain and higher elevation snow moving into
Southwest Alaska late Sunday into Monday. By Monday expect the low
to cross into the Gulf near Kodiak Island spreading winds and
precipitation to Kodiak Island and the coastal areas of
Southcentral and possibly north of the coastal mountains, however
lots of model uncertainty on where the low will track and where
precipitation will occur.
