COOK INLET...

A 989 mb low 130 nm southeast of Middleton Island weakens as it 
moves inland to the North Gulf Coast, dissipating by Wed 
afternoon. A 979 mb low moves to 250 nm south of Akhiok on Wed 
afternoon and then to 120 nm south of Kodiak at 980 mb by Wed
night. Its front extends into the Gulf through Thu morning.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A system of low pressure moves across the Gulf towards the North
Gulf Coast through the early week. Meanwhile, an arctic trough
pushes across the Southern Mainland. This will create an active
weather pattern, with rain for the Southcentral coastal areas and
possibly some localized rain/snow showers among the higher
elevations, as well as increased cloud cover and cooler
temperatures elsewhere across Southcentral. Further west, high
pressure sets up over the eastern Bering and parts of Southwest
Alaska. Ahead of the ridge, a much colder airmass moves over the
Mainland that will help continue the downward trend in overnight
temperatures. A large area of low pressure approaches tracks
eastwards south of the Aleutians through mid week. Its associated
front moves across the Chain and eventually up the AKPen, which
will produce another round of active weather to the Islands and
Southern Bering. There is really good model agreement with this
system through at least Wednesday evening. Beyond Wednesday
evening, model spread increases with the development of a possible
triple point low south/southwest of Kodiak Island around
Wednesday night.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

The models are in decent overall synoptic agreement through the
short term. There is a strong low over the Gulf that the models
are handling fairly well, with the Canadian being biggest outlier
amongst them. The Canadian is developing a separate low within the
trough closer to the shore and moving it along the front, while
the rest of the models keep the low further south in the Gulf. The
NAM/EC eventually catch up, pushing the low nearly onshore by
Tuesday. The GFS, by this point, keep the low much further south
in comparison before finally pushing northwards on Wednesday.
Further west, the models are handling a low tracking south of the
Aleutians really well, the timing and orientation, as well as
phasing, of the associated front is lining up well through at
least Wednesday morning. On the other hand, the models are
struggling quite a bit with a low dropping out of northern Russia
towards Western Alaska by Wednesday. There is a lot of discrepancy
with center location, with the GFS/EC being the most consistent
with each other, placing the low over the Kuskokwim Delta; the
Canadian lags behind the others, while the NAM is further north
over the Yukon Delta.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist through this
afternoon. Winds transition to northerly and progressively
increase throughout the day, becoming gusty by this evening.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Today through Wed night)...

The short stretch of mostly quiet, pleasant weather is beginning
to come to an end with cloud cover moving in over Southcentral
from two sides. From the south, clouds and showers are associated
with a low entering the Gulf, and from the north, a potent Arctic
trough is beginning to sweep across the Alaska Range. A complex
setup between these two systems is expected to play out today
through Tuesday.

Showers are already developing ahead of a front draped across the
Gulf, and will shortly be followed by the front itself, making
landfall before noon along the north Gulf coast, where the
heaviest precipitation can be expected initially. Some rain
showers are expected to make it over the Chugach Mountains and
affect the Anchorage area during the morning hours. A band of
precipitation is expected to set up today from the Susitna
Valley southward, enhanced by upsloping along the western slope
of the Talkeetna Mountains, as cold air brought by the Arctic
trough begins to undercut warm moist air advecting northward from
the Gulf. POPs are most likely in the Susitna Valley, decreasing
southward, however some rain could be seen as far south as the
western Kenai Peninsula. Throughout the day, this band of
precipitation is expected to push eastward, where it will reach
the Chugach Mountains by this evening. As the cold air continues
to push southeast, this will lower the snow level, and late this
evening as precipitation begins to taper off, some snow
accumulations, most likely less than an inch, are possible on the
Anchorage Hillside.

Out east in the Copper Basin, more significant winter weather
impacts can be expected, particularly in southern portions, where
northerly low-level flow wrapping the Gulf low will result in
upsloping wringing out moisture near and along mountainous
terrain. Expect the event to begin with rain today, although this
will change to snow tonight as cold air filters into the basin.
Higher elevations like Eureka and Thompson pass will begins to see
snow first, around 7-9 PM this evening. Lower elevations like
Gulkana will start to see precipitation as all snow around
midnight. 5-8 inches of snow is expected across parts of the Glenn
and Richardson Highway, with lower accumulations in the lower
elevations near Chitina and McCarthy. See the Winter Weather
Advisory issued for the Copper Basin for more information.

Strong gap winds bolstered by cold air advection will be the other
main impact from these systems. Strong gusty winds can be expected through
the typical places, including the Barren Islands, Seward, and
Whittier. Gusts may reach as high as 50 mph for Whittier and
Seward on Tuesday. The Anchorage Bowl itself will also be gusty
with northwesterly winds gusting up to 35 mph, especially on the
west side of town. Elevated mountain passes, particularly Thompson
Pass, are also expected to experience some blowing snow with gusty
winds accompanying higher snowfall rates.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

A cold front was visible on satellite imagery ("Nighttime
Microphysics") early this morning over the Aniak and Goodnews Bay.
Ahead of the front...there were mostly clear skies. Behind the
front there is an area of cold air stratocumulus clouds over the
northern Bering. The nose of the polar jet is near Kipnuk this
morning and it will be over King Salmon and Pilot Point by this
afternoon. Expect cold air advection with this system. A
reinforcing shortwave will dive towards Hooper Bay late Tuesday.
There is sufficient moisture and upward vertical motion associated
with this feature to support a quick shot of shower activity.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

An occluded front is south of the eastern Aleutians and AKPEN
early this morning. The parent low is south of Kodiak and slowly
weakening. There is a ridge axis over the central Aleutians and a
closed upper level low near Kamchatka with multiple embedded
vorticity lobes. The models suggest that the pattern will be
progressive. Tuesday morning a new surface low will be south of
Adak. The pressure gradient associated with this low is pretty
strong, expect gusty easterly winds from this system even though
the position of the surface low stays 200+ miles south of the
chain. Gales are anticipated on the Pacific side of the chain.

The Semisopochnoi volcano which is 140 nm west of Adak is
currently active. Last night, the Alaska Volcano Observatory
upgraded its status from orange to red.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5/ Wednesday through Friday)...

High pressure across the northern half of the Bering spreads
generally light winds over the region. A well-developed low south
of the Aleutians spreads gusty winds less than gale force across
the southern Bering. Widespread high-end gales wrap the low as it
moves into the Gulf of Alaska by Friday. Seas to 18 ft along the
Aleutians and Alaska Peninsula, subsiding Thursday. This low
continues to the North Gulf Coast through Friday. High-end gales
ahead of the low with areas of storm force winds near the capes
along the North Gulf Coast down to Kodiak Island, dissipating
Friday. Seas to 16 ft spread across the Gulf through Friday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Thursday through Sunday)...

Deterministic and ensemble forecast models are in excellent
agreement through the long term due to well defined and strong
upper level features. A strong upper level jet ranging from 120 to
140 kts will extend a high amplitude trough from the Kamchatka
Peninsula south to 40N and north to Southeast Alaska. An
additional polar jetstreak is expected from the Gulf of Anadyr to
the AKPen between 70 and 90 kts. With the jetstreak extending from
the north Pacific to Southeast Alaska, a strong upper low is
expected to develop in the left exit region and move into
Southcentral Alaska Thursday through Saturday. Deterministic
models have the surface low center somewhere in the vicinity of
Prince William Sound Friday night, which will make for a
difficult precipitation type forecast throughout Southcentral.
Cold air aloft is expected to wrap in on the backside of the low,
but seasonally high sea surface temperatures will likely yield
rain at sea level with snow likely over the mountains.

Out west the weather will be a bit quieter with brisk northerly
winds likely from Southwest to the AKPen and fairly quiet
conditions for the central Bering. Over the western Bering storms
are likely to track south from the Kamchatka Peninsula, over the
western Aleutians, and into the north Pacific.
