Semisopochnoi Volcano 36 nm northeast of Amchitka is active.

A 993 mb low 170 nm North of St Paul Island dissipates Sun 
morning. A 997 mb low 95 nm North of Seguam Island moves to 
50 nm South of Dillingham at 982 mb for Sun night then shifts 
to 60 nm West of St Michael at 993 mb by Mon afternoon. Its 
front pushes into Southwest Alaska through Mon afternoon. A 
986 mb low and its front approaches the Western Aleutians for 
Mon afternoon.

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A broad, upper-level trough remains over the Bering with a series
of shortwaves and associated surface lows embedded within it. Over
the gulf, a deep upper-level low is weakening as it slowly drifts
south and east and begins to exit the Gulf. Pulses of upper-level
energy are rotating around this feature, with one sliding over the
Anchorage Bowl and Cook Inlet and second south of Prince William
Sound, closer to the surface low. The wave over Cook Inlet is
producing areas of light rain from from Homer to Wasilla this
afternoon as the southeasterly flow aloft continues to advect Gulf
moisture. This feature is also running into a shortwave and
associated cold front advance from the west, resulting in an area
of deformation or diffluence, as a portion of the mid-level flow
is wrapping back around the Gulf low and a portion is being pulled
northward in advance of that second shortwave. This deformation
is also providing enough dynamics to produce rain over the
Anchorage area. The rain is light, however, as the northerly low
level flow is drying out the column closer to the surface. Rain
also continue along the north Gulf coast as that wave closer to
the center of circulation moves across the region.

Farther west, a compact surface low is lifting north of the
Kuskokwim Delta. A well-defined cold front is associated with this
feature and is moving into the lower Kuskokwim Valley. Visible
satellite is depicting this front well, and is also showing
clearing taking place behind the front. Another shortwave and
associate surface frontal system is tracking across the Bering,
moving over the Pribilofs this afternoon. Yet another wave is
moving toward the western Aleutians. A large swath of open-cell
cumulus can be seen on visible satellite, an indication of the
cold air advecting eastward from Russia.

Large, broad upper level trough pattern continues to dominate over
the Bering Sea, with a series of embedded shortwaves and surface
lows cycling around it. Attached to the base of the first trough
is a large low tracking across the southern Gulf towards the
Southeast Coast. This system remains well enough south to keep the
majority of the precipitation along the Coastal areas. As the
trough slides northward, the Gulf low detaches and scoots off to
the east. There will likely be an upslope component associated
with the upper level trough, that will likely end up producing
areas of precipitation along the mountain ranges in the Mat-Su
Valleys.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in fairly good agreement through the next day or so
before discrepancies begin to creep into the picture. The increase
in model spread and decrease in forecast confidence is due to
growing complexity in the upper-level pattern, specially the
progression and strength of various shortwaves rotating within the
larger upper-level trough. The overall picture is there; a
shortwave progressing along the Chain Saturday beginning to
amplify the trough / ridge pattern with a second wave digging
south out of eastern Russia adding to this amplification. Guidance
depicts this set up well, with that initial wave strengthening
quickly as it gets support from a potent subtropical jet. The
issue arises when this feature moves to the AKPen by Sunday
morning. The 12z GFS/EC/GEM all show this upper-level wave further
strengthening into a low, lifting north into Southwest Alaska as
surface low quickly develops, deepens, and moves north through
Bristol Bay and eventually to the Kuskokwim Valley. This northward
progression is in response to both the amplification of the ridge
downstream and the digging of another upper-level low over the
Bering southward. The 06Z NAM was depicting this as well, but the
12z run now keeps the initial wave open with its energy
consolidating into an upper-level low over the Kuskokwim Delta. At
the surface, this would lead to the development of a surface low
closer to Nunivak Island with a triple-point low spinning up near
the mouth of Cook Inlet and eventually lifting north.

While solutions also vary on the strength of the surface low or
lows and how much weakening occurs as these features lift into
interior Alaska, consensus is that this feature will be a
significant wind maker from Bristol Bay northeast to the Kenai
Peninsula and Anchorage Bowl. While strong gap winds are likely,
the struggle is where the core of strongest winds will be and when
those will occur. Right now, the NAM is seen as the outlier in
terms of position and the GFS in terms of strength. Thus, a
GFS/GEM blend has been used for the afternoon package. This leads
to high end gales over the marine zones with the strongest winds
across higher elevations and through Turnagain Arm, likely peaking
sometime late Sunday evening or early Monday morning.

Models show the same bigger synoptic picture with smaller-scale
differences moving into early next week as the longwave trough
slowly shifts east.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions and light winds will persist. Periods of
light rain will continue into the evening hours. There is a
chance for fog to develop by early morning Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
Monday afternoon)...

An upper ridge is currently displacing a weak trough over
Southcentral. Showers will gradually taper off from west to east
through this evening, with most of the remaining precipitation
confined to higher elevations. Mostly sunny skies and slightly
warmer temperatures are still expected through Saturday as the
ridge moves over the region. Areas of fog are possible during the
morning hours near Cook Inlet. Given the residual moisture from
today's showers, brief thicker fog may occur leading to periods of
reduced visibility.

A much more active pattern will develop on Sunday. A low moving up
the Alaska Peninsula will bring gusty southeasterly winds and
periods of heavy rain to Kodiak by Sunday morning. Model agreement
is slightly improving and currently it is presently expected that
highest winds (possibly up to 70 mph) will occur along Turnagain
Arm Sunday evening into early Monday morning. Slightly lesser
winds are expected along the Anchorage upper hillside. Winds in
the Anchorage bowl are a bit more uncertain, but it does not
appear that these will be overly concerning. Gusty winds are also
possible in the Knik River Valley at the same time. Rainfall
amounts will be highest along Prince William Sound and the eastern
Kenai Peninsula, although the usual downsloping will occur in the
Seward area with stronger cross-barrier flow. Winds will slightly
diminish by Monday afternoon, however the overall unsettled
pattern will continue.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 to 3: Friday
afternoon through Monday)...

A compact low just north of the Pribilof Islands will move onshore
this evening bringing rain to the Y-K Delta through at least
Saturday morning. Onshore flow and weak, disorganized upper level
waves may continue rain over the area through Sunday, though
forecast confidence drops considerably on Sunday as models
struggle to resolve multiple waves in a complex, broad upper level
trough. The challenge itself is the interaction of a shortwave
over the north Pacific merging with much stronger upper level low
moving rapidly west across the Aleutians. The uncertainty lays in
where the low center will form as the low crosses the ALeutian
Range. This forecast package represents somewhat of the mean
location, with the low bottoming out over Bristol Bay. Impacts
include gale force westerly winds over the marine areas of the
AKPen and Bristol Bay, along with storm force gusts south of the
AKPen. Gale force easterly winds are possible in the interior
through Kamishak Gap as far west as New Stuyahok. Rain is
expected to be widespread over the AKPen and Bristol Bay, with
lower, albeit still decent, chances over the Y-K Delta and Lower
Kuskokwim Valley through Monday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 to 3: Friday
afternoon through Monday)...

A broad trough with multiple transient lows will persist over the
region through the forecast period. A series of relatively weak
lows will pass over the Pribilof Islands tonight and tomorrow,
bringing 25 kt winds and rain. The main features will be two
strong upper level lows that will move rapidly west across the
Aleutians Saturday and Sunday. Widespread showers and 30 kt winds
are expected over the weekend throughout the Aleutian Chain. On
Monday, a brief break is expected as a shortwave ridge develops
over the western to central Bering, however this will be short
lived as the next front moves over the western Aleutians Monday
afternoon.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5/Monday through Wednesday)...

Monday will see the low that will bring an active weather weekend
weakening, but it still looks likely that a large swath of Gales
will persist in the eastern Bering Sea Monday into Tuesday. The
Gulf of Alaska should see winds significantly diminished, but the
southern Gulf could still be pushing Gale force Monday into Monday
night as well as some 15 to 20 ft seas on Monday. Another low
entering the western Bering Sea Tuesday will bring more areas of
Gales to the Bering Sea Tuesday and Wednesday, but this low will
not be as strong as the one this weekend.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7. Monday through Thursday)...

Starting the period on Monday of next week when a reasonably
strong surface low will be centered near the Y-K Delta with a
ridge over the central Bering Sea with another large low lurking
west of the Aleutians. This will start of the period with rain
along the Gulf of Alaska Coast with showers inland in Southcentral
and Southwest Alaska. As we progress into Tuesday night, the Y-K
Delta low will move northward and dissipate with the next low
encompassing most of the Bering Sea. While the surface low will be
gone, the upper level trough and cold air aloft associated with
it will track over Southcentral keeping the clouds and showers
around.

The Bering Sea low should reach Kodiak by Thursday as a little
bit stronger of a ridge than we have had the last week or so
builds into the Bering Sea. This will keep the showers mostly over
Southwest Alaska into the Gulf of Alaska with generally just
mostly clouds skies over Southcentral. While the exact track of
these lows still in up in the air, there is good enough agreement
to have pretty good confidence in this general pattern and timing.

...Strong Wind Expected Sunday Afternoon into Sunday Night...

Strong winds are expected to develop late Sunday morning along
Turnagain Arm and higher elevations, persisting into Sunday night.
Southeasterly gusts of 50 to 60 mph are expected, most likely on
Sunday evening.

On the Anchorage Lower Hillside between approximately 500-1500
feet, gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible around this same time
period.

Gusty winds up to 40 mph are possible through the Anchorage Bowl
Sunday evening through Sunday night, which will begin later than
the winds at higher elevations.

Impacts include branches and small trees being blown over,
possibly causing localized power outages. The strong winds will
make travel more difficult along the Seward Highway down Turnagain
Arm for high profile vehicles. People are urged to secure loose
objects that could be blown around or damaged by the wind.
