A 995 mb low 100 nm southwest of Goodnews Bay will move inland 
over Southwest Alaska tonight. A 992 mb North Pacific low 150 nm 
south of Dutch Harbor Monday morning will move to 60 nm southeast
of Chignik at 991 mb Monday afternoon. The low then exits into 
the Gulf by Tue morning.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...
Satellite imagery is showing a deep fetch of moisture across the
central Pacific owing to a patchwork of tropical systems in the
west Pac, along the East Asian Coastline. Upstream, a 500mb low is
progressing eastward, now sitting north of the Aleutian Islands
and associated with a 125 kt jet at 300 mb. Across the Gulf of
Alaska, an upper ridge is being pushed east and out of the low's
way. Some light showers are showing on radar across southcentral,
with areas along the Aleutians and St Paul showing more consistent
rainfall under the primary bands of moisture.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...
Decent model agreement exists through early Monday before models
truly begin to diverge. Discrepancies become noteworthy at this
point - likely exaggerated by the patchwork of tropical systems
in the West Pacific and disagreement on how these storms will
combine as remnants with the North Pacific lows as they move
inland.

.AVIATION...
PANC...Low VFR conditions and light, variable winds persist. This
will change this evening winds increase out of the south with
gusts 15 to 25 kts ahead of an incoming front. Increasing chances
for rain along and behind the front in the second half of the TAF
period.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Tonight
through Tuesday night)...

A broad frontal system from the western Gulf combined with a few
isolated upper level disturbances will bring a lot of rain and
moisture across Southcentral through at least Tuesday evening.
Remnants of Tropical Storm Nida from Northwest Pacific will
elevate both the winds and moisture content as it extends across
the Gulf into Prince William Sound (PWS) between Monday and
Tuesday. The low will bring gales across the Gulf before reaching
the south of Cordova briefly on Monday night. Steady moderate to
heavy rain would be a concern especially for PWS. More rain will
move across Cook Inlet tonight through Susitna Valley by Sunday
morning, with possibly light rain expected over most of Anchorage
Bowl through the short term. Cooler temperatures and mostly cloudy
to overcast skies will persist, with strong gusts accompanying
the front through the next couple days.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Saturday
evening through Tuesday)...

A frontal system pushing into Southwest AK today is providing
widespread rain, cloud cover and cooler temperatures. This front
will push through tonight and exit into Southcentral AK. On shore
flow behind the frontal passage will keep weather cool, cloudy
and unsettled with showery activity the next few days. The
forecast was updated today to reflect this, with an increase in
chance of rain and an increase in the amount of rain we expect to
fall. Models are consistent in depicting this pattern in the next
day or to, so high confidence in the forecast through the weekend.
However, models diverge quickly going into next week. We know
that weather will remain active and wet with incoming remnants of
typhoons from the Pacific. However, between already existing poor
performance and models traditionally having a hard time with
tropical remnants, we don't have good confidence in forecast
specifics beyond Monday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Saturday evening through Tuesday)...

Active weather is expected to continue in the Bering/Aleutians.
The low pressure currently in the Central Bering is expected to
push east tonight and into tomorrow. Models are consistently
showing winds on the backside of the low to have a core of gale
force winds that moves through the Eastern Aleutians tonight into
tomorrow. So, this update was made to the forecast today. After
this low exits, model guidance begins to degrade so it is
difficult to ascertain what will happen in the weather early next
week. We do know that the remnants of a typhoon in the Pacific
will be moving into our forecast area. This usually results in
poor model performance so expect changes in the forecast ahead. We
do know that weather will stay active and wet into next week.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Tuesday through Thursday)...
The forecast period from Tuesday through Thursday looks to be
quite active for the area southeast of the Alaska Peninsula
northeast through the Gulf of Alaska. A low pressure system early
Tuesday will continue moving inland from Prince William Sound
while quickly weakening through Tuesday afternoon. As a result,
small craft winds are expected across a large area of the Gulf of
Alaska on the south side of the low with seas of 11 to 18 ft
subsiding throughout the day Tuesday to 6 to 12 ft. There will be
a brief break in activity Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night
before another low follows a similar track for Wednesday into
Thursday. There remains uncertainty on exactly where the center of
this low will track but there is high confidence that another low
will bring gale force winds and seas 12 to 18 ft to the Gulf of
Alaska Wednesday. Models track this low anywhere from over Kodiak
Island to Kachemak Bay or as far east as Prince William Sound.
Regardless of track, there is also the potential for a high end
small craft or even gale force barrier jet along the North Gulf
Coast Wednesday. Lastly, expect winds less than 30 kts and seas
less than 7 ft for much of the Bering Sea through the forecast
period.

Long Term Discussion (Days 4 through 7: Wednesday through
Saturday)...

The long term forecast period shows a Bering Sea trough with a
ridge over western North America and southwest flow in between the
two. Overall, this means a very active storm track for Southern
Alaska especially east of the Alaska Range to Southeast Alaska.
Southwest Alaska looks to predominantly remain in a showery regime
type pattern through the forecast period with the steadier and
heavier precipitation for east of the Alaska Range to Southeast
Alaska. The big challenge for this time period is determining the
timing and intensity of each system which remains drastically
different on the model suite. The GFS remains the strongest with
the system for Wednesday/Thursday with the Canadian-NH and ECMWF
further east and weaker. Overall, expect the sensible weather to
continue to entail unsettled conditions with plenty of wind and
rain, especially for coastal locations. Also, with the persistence
of this pattern, it should be noted that there is the potential
for an atmospheric river setup anywhere from the Prince William
Sound area east to Southeast Alaska. Some of these systems that
move northward into the Gulf of Alaska will also be possible
remnants of tropical systems in the West Pacific, therefore,
possibly very moisture laden. For the Bering Sea and Aleutians,
expect overall quiet conditions with occasional showers but with
generally light winds.
