Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Broad longwave trough pattern continues to dominate the State,
pulling an arctic low southward across Southwest Alaska. This
system is transporting a large amount of moisture with it, putting
most of Southern Alaska in wet and cloudy conditions. There has
been a lot of struggle amongst the models with timing and center
location for this incoming system. The most recent runs have
pushed it further off to the east this weekend at a quicker rate
that was previously indicated. The placement of the low will
affect how strong winds through Cook Inlet and Shelikof Strait
will get, as well as where the heaviest rain showers will fall.
The current track shows the low crossing over the AKPen by this
evening, briefly placing it south of Kodiak Island before pivoting
eastward to enter the Gulf of Alaska by early Sunday. The system
ends up stalling in the Gulf through early next week, which may
result in persistent rain showers along the North Gulf Coast if
the low is far enough north. Should it remain further south along
the Southern Gulf/North Pacific, most of the moisture may end up
confined over the waters or get transported towards Southeast
Alaska.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good overall synoptic agreement through the short
term. There are, however, significant disagreement on the location
of the low as it crosses the AKPen and moves south of Kodiak
Island and into the Gulf. Initially, the the models are doing
alright, with only the GFS pushing slightly further south than
the others. Model spread continues to increase the further east
the low travels. The Canadian/EC seem to be doing the best in
coordination through Monday afternoon, while the NAM is further
west and the GFS further west still. The 06Z NAM run is showing a
more eastward trend, signifying the attempt to better align with
the Canadian/EC in putting the low further east than originally
indicated.

.AVIATION...
PANC...VFR conditions. The same trend continues today, gusty,
southeasterly winds through the early morning, with a brief break
through the afternoon before Turnagain Arm winds pick back up in
the evening.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3...Sat
through Mon)...

The vigorous upper level low will pass over the Aleutian/Alaska
Ranges this morning before a surface low develops near Kodiak. The
net effect for all of this will be continued wet weather for
coastal locations with gusty and showery conditions for inland
areas. The rain has struggled to materialize overnight for
Anchorage and the Mat Valley thanks in part to some southeasterly
cross barrier flow. The best chances for these areas to see any
steady precipitation will be early this morning before the
surface low develops and cross barrier flow increases even
further. Rain will not be hard to come by over Kodiak and the Gulf
Coast. This system is packing a healthy amount of moisture,
reminiscent of almost a late August type system. As it wraps up
over the Western Gulf today, this will enhance onshore/upslope
flow for areas from Seward through Cordova. Seward can expect on
the order of another 1.5" of rain before late Sun night, while
Whittier could see as much as 4" by Mon morning.

By late tonight into early Sun, the surface low will take shape
just east of Kodiak Island. This will cause winds to increase to
gale force across the Northern Gulf and down through the Barren
Islands. As it slowly shifts east on Sunday, some ageostrophic
flow will start to usher some drier air across interior
Southcentral. While there will still be enough mid and upper level
moisture to keep things cloudy, this should result in a dry day
for most inland locations. Temperatures will also start to slowly
rebound from the cooler conditions of the past few days.

Heading into Mon, there is still some uncertainty in exactly where
the low will park itself. A slight wobble to the north and it
could bring another round of rain sweeping from east to west
across the southern mainland late on Mon. If it stays further
south, drier conditions with warmer temperatures will start to
build in. For now, we have leaned towards the drier solutions.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Monday)...

The low pressure will continue to move across Bristol Bay today
and move into the southwestern Gulf tonight. Rain will persist
from the Kilbuck Mountains through the Bristol Bay region today
with rain decreasing in coverage and intensity this afternoon as
the low moves east. By tonight the rain will end with patchy fog
expected Sunday morning across the Kuskokwim Delta. Temperatures
will also warm today across the Kuskokwim Delta and Middle
Kuskokwim valley with 60s in most valley locations. Sunday the
warm weather continues with mid 60s to mid 70s expected. A weak
shortwave will dive down from the north Sunday and bring a few
showers and clouds to the Kuskokwim Delta. Monday continued warm
temperatures with clouds across the Bristol Bay region and a few
afternoon showers possible as a weak shortwave rotates across the
area.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Monday)...

The low moving across Bristol Bay will bring small craft winds
through the gaps south of the AKPEN as northwesterly flow develops
this afternoon and continues through tomorrow. Otherwise a ridge
of high pressure will dominate much of the northern and central
Bering extending towards the eastern Aleutians with low stratus
clouds and areas of fog possible. Some haze from the fires burning
in Russia will still be possible across portions of the northern
Bering through this evening. Meanwhile a low northwest of Attu
Island and a weak front will bring a few showers across the
western and central Aleutians today. Sunday high pressure will
continue to dominate much of the area with continued low clouds
and areas of fog. Sunday night and Monday a low pressure system
will moves towards the western and central Aleutians with areas of
rain and increasing winds but less than 25 knots.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Monday through Wednesday)...

A low in the Gulf of Alaska will cause lingering gale force winds
into Monday morning for coastal waters. This low will be weakening
through Wednesday, so anticipate improving conditions. Expect
winds less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft for the Day 3
through 5 period for all other locations. There is high
confidence in the forecast.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Monday through Friday)...

A more fall-like pattern continues into the long term forecast for
next week. It starts Monday with a stationary area of low pressure
in the Gulf of Alaska, with cooler temperatures and unsettled
weather continuing. High pressure begins to build over the Bering
Sea. As the week progresses, models begin to differ substantially
on placement of specific features. Therefore, confidence begins
to drop in exact locations of active weather. However, there is
enough agreement to discern that high pressure will continue to
build into the Eastern Bering and then Southwest AK midweek.
Meanwhile, low pressure lingers in the Gulf of Alaska. Models also
indicate this setup slowly progresses east through the global
scale weather patterns as the week goes. So, late in the week we
are at least moderately confident that high pressure and better
weather (clear skies and warming temperatures) will move over
mainland AK with more active weather returning to the Bering.
