Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

The longwave trough with the cold air aloft that has been over
Southcentral Alaska the past two days is moving to the northeast
today. Another upper level low has moved from the Chukchi Sea
yesterday to Southwest Alaska today. This low is not as cold
aloft, but is still bringing rain to southwest Alaska and into the
Kenai Peninsula this afternoon. This digging low will become the
main upper level low over the region through the weekend.

An upper level ridge is over the central Bering Sea bringing a mix
of areas of low stratus clouds and areas of clear skies. Farther
west, the next low and front are heading into the Bering and Western
Aleutians.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

While models remain in good synoptic agreement, there are some
notable differences in the handling of the Gulf of Alaska low
this weekend. The ECMWF and Canadian models are still pushing the
low farther to the northeast of the GFS and NAM solutions. While
this does not appear to be a big difference on the map, it will
have an impact on where the heaviest rainfall occurs along the
north Gulf coast and Kodiak Island. It may also affect the amount
of cloud cover inland in both Southwest and Southcentral Alaska,
especially on Sunday. These models are all digging in their heels
a bit and not changing much run-to-run to form a closer agreement,
so we will continue to watch how this develops.

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions will persist through Saturday afternoon.
Gusty Turnagain Arm winds should diminish after midnight and,
while possible, are less likely to move over the airfield again
on Saturday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 and 3...Tonight
through Monday evening)...

Light to moderate showers developed today over the eastern Kenai
Peninsula and coastal areas of Prince William Sound in response to
weak instability coupled with an upper level wave near the north
Gulf coast. Meanwhile, the main weather feature dominating our
forecast area over the next couple of days will be an
unseasonably strong upper level low and associated surface front
moving from Southwest Alaska into the Gulf. Gusty, southeasterly
gap winds have developed out ahead of the front and will continue
through Saturday morning over Turnagain Arm, Knik River Valley,
and the Copper River Valley in response to a coastal ridge and
pressure gradient strengthening.

As the front continues moving toward the north Gulf coast, expect
additional rain along the Southcentral coast through Monday
evening. The impressive fetch of Pacific moisture and
precipitation will bring steady moderate to heavy rain over Kodiak
Island and then the southern and eastern Kenai Peninsula by this
evening. The rest of the moisture and rain will be concentrated
from Cook Inlet north across the Susitna Valley and along PWS.

The latest model runs are still struggling with the exact track
and position of the aforementioned low as it slowly becomes
detached from the jet stream and meanders over the Gulf. Suffice
to say that drier conditions are expected by late Saturday through
Monday over the interior valleys with the help of the cross-
barrier jet forming along the coast and a weak, northerly flow
developing as the low moves southward. The stalled out frontal
boundary, however, will continue to bring the best chance of
rainfall along the Gulf coast and across Kodiak Island through
early next week.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

The forecast period commences with the longwave trough extending
from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf Of Alaska. There are multiple
slugs of energy embedded in the upper trough and by Saturday
morning there will be a closed low over Bristol Bay and the AKPEN. This
system has brought rain to portions of Southwest Alaska and
convection to just off the coast. Currently there is a surface
low near Bethel and the models drop the surface low southward near
Togiak tomorrow morning. Lingering showers are anticipated
Saturday. Expect a warming and drying trend Sunday and Monday.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

The low tracking across Southwest Alaska today will keep an
enhanced pressure gradient across Bristol Bay southward impacting
the eastern Aleutians. There is a mature frontal boundary over the
Western Bering/Aleutians but this system is past its prime and
will undergo frontolysis. The impacts will be minimal. The next
organized low to impact the western Aleutians is anticipated
Sunday night.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Monday through Wednesday)...

A low in the Gulf of Alaska will cause lingering gale force winds
into Monday morning for coastal waters. This low will be weakening
through Wednesday, so ancitipate improving conditions. Expect
winds less than 35 kts and seas less than 20 ft for the Day 3
through 5 period for all other locations. There is high
confidence in the forecast.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Monday through Friday)...

A more fall-like pattern continues into the long term forecast for
next week. It starts Monday with a stationary area of low pressure
in the Gulf of Alaska, with cooler temperatures and unsettled
weather continuing. High pressure begins to build over the Bering
Sea. As the week progresses, models begin to differ substanially
on placement of specific features. Therefore, confidence begins
to drop in exact locations of active weather. However, there is
enough agreement to discern that high pressure will continue to
build into the Eastern Bering and then Southwest AK midweek.
Meanwhile, low pressure lingers in the Gulf of Alaska. Models also
indicate this setup slowly progresses east through the global
scale weather patterns as the week goes. So, late in the week we
are at least moderately confident that high pressure and better
weather (clear skies and warming temperatures) will move over
mainland AK with more active weather returning to the Bering.
