.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Longwave troughs exist over the AlCan border and western Bering
separated by a high amplitude ridge over the central Bering. A
120-150 kt jet core exists from the Seward Peninsula to the Kenai
Peninsula. This feature, combined with a shortwave trough over
Southeast Alaska and another over the western interior, have
brought gusty winds and unseasonably cold temperatures across the
mainland. Underneath the Bering trough a complex low with multiple
centers can be seen on satellite with its front extending from
Adak to the Pribilof Islands.

Cold temperatures and gusty winds are the main weather story for
today across the mainland. Thompson Pass and Valdez win the prize
for windiest area this morning with sustained winds of 75 mph with
gusts to 89 mph in the pass along with gusts up to 68 mph at
Valdez airport. Other notable wind observations include gusts to
56, 67, and 64 mph for Kodiak City, Whittier, and Seward
respectively. As of 5 am Anchorage International has tied its low
temperature record at 7F. Out west, morning low temperatures have
plummeted below -10F over the Kuskokwim with lows below zero
making it as far south as King Salmon.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models continue to perform well. Some disagreements remain in how
far south the polar shortwave currently near Fairbanks will push
before moving east into the Yukon Territory. This will impact the
duration and strength of the high winds over Thompson Pass and
wind chill potential for the Copper River Basin. Forecast
confidence for these features is moderate. Out west there are
model differences due to multiple shortwaves embedded in the
longwave trough. Differences in the wind field over the Bering are
minor, with slight deviations in the strongest winds depending on
where the meso-lows are along the front.

PANC...Ceilings and visibility will remain VFR. Expect gusty
northerly winds to continue through the afternoon before returning
to calm conditions in the evening.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Sunday night)...

The Arctic trough which brought bitter cold and strong winds to
Southcentral and the Gulf will slowly exit eastward across the
Copper River Basin through tonight, with a short-wave ridge
building in behind it. Winds have peaked across the western
Gulf/Kodiak Island and will steadily diminish through the day.
Winds have also started to diminish from the western Kenai to
Anchorage and the Susitna Valley, though daytime heating will
maintain some locally gusty winds through the day. Meanwhile,
winds will peak this morning for locations along Prince William
Sound and the north Gulf coast, as strong subsidence from the
passing short-wave combines with low level cold air advection and
tight pressure gradients. This includes Seward and Valdez/Thompson
Pass where High Wind Warnings remain in effect. Winds will begin
to diminish by midday, but it will be a slow process. With such
an abnormally cold airmass sitting over Southcentral, some
temperature records will likely fall today and tonight. The
frigid temperatures will be relatively short-lived however,
as a progressive upper level pattern brings a quick warm-up
this weekend.

A strong front crossing the Bering Sea will weaken as it reaches
the western Gulf and Kodiak Island Saturday morning. A short-wave
trough aloft will interact with the front to bring light snow to
Southcentral on Saturday. However, there won't be much
accumulation as the upper wave moves through quickly and a triple
point low develops over the northwest Gulf, keeping the best low-
level forcing to the south. Generally expect a dusting, with
perhaps as much as an inch along the western slopes of the Kenai,
Chugach, and Talkeetna Mountains.

A short-wave trough will then dig across the North Pacific
Saturday afternoon through Saturday night, leading to
amplification of the upper level flow as well as frontogenesis
over the eastern Bering Sea. As this front approaches, the
airmass over Southcentral will continue to warm. More
significantly, it will lead to strengthening southeast low level
flow across Southcentral Saturday night through Sunday. This will
lead to more significant warming on Sunday, with much of
Southcentral expected to reach freezing or above. Meanwhile, all
the ingredients will come together to produce significant
precipitation for Kodiak and the Gulf coastal zone on Sunday.
While Kodiak will see mostly rain, this will produce a heavy wet
snow for the mountains of Prince William Sound/eastern Kenai.
This will likely exacerbate the avalanche danger. Strong downslope
flow will keep much of the western Kenai, Anchorage and the
Matanuska Valley dry.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Today through Sunday)...

Mostly clear skies and colder temperatures will persist this
morning under high pressure. Cloud cover will increase this
afternoon from west to east as a front approaches the coast. It
will move onshore this evening, bringing snow and blowing snow to
the Kuskokwim Delta. Winds will be weaker farther inland, however
widespread accumulating snow is expected across much of Southwest
Alaska through Saturday morning. Snow will gradually taper to
scattered snow showers by Saturday afternoon as the front weakens
and an upper ridge moves over the region.

A second front will rapidly approach the Kuskokwim Delta coast
Saturday evening. Although temperatures will be warmer with strong
southerly winds, it should still be cold enough for all snow. As
such, blizzard conditions will be likely through early Sunday
morning. Areas north and west of Dillingham will also see snow and
blowing snow. As temperatures warm through the day Sunday,
precipitation will change to a mix or rain for lower elevation
areas.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Today through Sunday)...

A front will track east to west across the central Bering today
bringing blizzard conditions to the Pribilofs this morning. Light
snow is likely across the Aleutians as well. Precipitation will
change to rain in southwesterly winds behind the front. A broad
low will slowly track across the western Bering through the
weekend, continuing the unsettled pattern and leading to
widespread rain/snow showers.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Gulf of Alaska: Generally southerly winds over the Gulf of Alaska,
with a low pressure system setting up a barrier jet with gale
force winds along the coast of of the Gulf of Alaska.

Bering Sea: A large area of low pressure will remain over the
Bering sea with gale force winds expected on Sunday. This will
dissipate through Tuesday.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Monday through Thursday)...

Long term guidance is at least in fair agreement to start next
week. Therefore, moderate confidence in the overall picture but
there is not enough agreement on specific features to hone a solid
forecast yet. Generally, we can say that long wave troughing will
be present over the Bering Sea, meaning generally inclement
weather for that region and Southwest AK. Southcentral AK will be
on the leading edge of this trough, with shortwave troughs moving
through the flow over Southcentral. So, inclement weather can also
be expected, with some type of defined weather feature moving
through the region to start the week. As far as temperatures go,
with the center of the trough being parked over the Bering,
expect cooler temperatures for that area and the western
Aleutians. Warming can be expected for mainland AK with general
southerly flow.

Moving through the week, this pattern is slow to move with the
trough slowly shifting east. This means weather will be slow to
change and we can expect unsettled weather for most locations with
cooler temperatures over the Bering and warmer temperatures over
Mainland AK.
