.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level low near 46N 177W is moving east-northeastward. The
jetstream remains south of 50N and west of 150W then extends
northeast to along the Southern Kenai Peninsula and the AKPEN,
then extends west-northwestward to the Kamchatka Peninsula. A
second upper low is developing in the left-exit region of the jet
near 54N 158W and is moving northwestward. The front associated
with this low is moving northward across the Gulf of Alaska.

Closer to the surface, radar imagery shows precipitation across
the Kuskokwim Delta and Bristol Bay. Observations show a few
different precipitation types in the Bristol Bay area with a
rain/snow mix near the coast and snow for the more inland
locations. Observations show much colder temperatures across the
Kuskokwim Delta as well as snow. Radar and observations also
show a rain/snow mix along the southern Kenai Peninsula. The
precipitation across Southcentral and Southwest is all moving
northwest.

Guidance is generally in good agreement with respect to the
placement and intensity of synoptic scale features at both the
surface and in the upper levels. Forecast confidence remains above
average.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Sunday Afternoon)...

A front associated with a low tracking across the Southern Gulf
is currently bringing moderate rain to Kodiak Island. Gusty
easterly winds of up 50 mph have also been observed. Conditions
will gradually improve through the evening as both precipitation
and winds will become relatively lighter. There remains some
uncertainty regarding the rain/snow transition, however all snow
appears likely after midnight with minor accumulations. Light snow
is expected to continue through Saturday as even though surface
temperatures will remain slightly above freezing, coldest 850 mb
temperatures could approach -10C. Another front will track south
to north across the island late Saturday into Sunday morning.
Southerly flow aloft will bring in warmer air and thus
precipitation will change back to all rain. Light snow will also
continue in the Homer area through midnight tonight. Gusty
easterly winds similar to those in Kodiak are expected as well,
leading to blowing/drifting in exposed areas. Dry conditions are
expected Saturday.

Quiet conditions are expected elsewhere over the mainland through
the weekend. Weak offshore flow will bring clearing skies and
cooler temperatures. The only precipitation is expected on
Saturday evening through Sunday across western Prince William
Sound and the southern/eastern Kenai Peninsula. Minor snow
accumulations are possible.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3:
Thursday Afternoon through Sunday)...

A strong shortwave with associated surface low and warm front
pushing into the Bristol Bay region this evening will produce very
gusty winds up to 60 mph. Snow will also increase as this front
approaches tonight with 2 to 4 inches expected overnight, this
snow will be heavy at times and with the strong winds will reduce
visibilities down to a quarter mile or less across the Kuskokwim
Delta, especially along coastal locations. Across Bristol Bay it
will remain windy tonight but temperatures are already in the mid
to upper 30s and areas with downsloping winds around King Salmon
and Iliamna will see very little if any snow. As the front moves
north and west tonight the snow will end across the Kuskokwim
Delta and warmer temperatures will push in which will end the
threat of blowing snow sometime between midnight and sunrise
tomorrow morning. Winds will decrease on Friday behind the front
with quieter weather ensuing with cloudy but drier conditions.

Saturday will be slightly cooler as colder air at 850mb advects
into the area from the interior with continued dry conditions. As
we head in Saturday night and Sunday another frontal system will
move into the Eastern Bering Sea bringing another round of light
snow to the Kuskokwim Delta on Sunday with only minor accumulations
generally less than two inches. Winds will not be as strong with
this system so blowing snow is not expected to be an issue.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3:
Thursday Afternoon through Sunday)...

Active weather will continue across the region through the weekend
and likely into early next week.

The most significant feature right now is a surface low moving
across the AKPEN into the Eastern Bering tonight. This will bring
storm force winds, however behind this front warmer air with
slackening winds will replace the widespread gales we will
continue to see through Friday morning. The front associated with
the low will move north and west and by Friday morning. It will be
located just west of St. Matthew Island and extend south towards
the Central Aleutians. Winds will decrease to small crafts by
Friday afternoon across much of the Bering Sea with the exceptions
being the Western Bering and Eastern Bering where Gales will
linger. Heavy freezing spray across the Northern Bering south and
west of St. Matthew Island will continue before tapering off by
Friday afternoon.

A complex low pressure system spinning just south of the Aleutians
will slowly move north and will push another frontal system into
the Bering Friday night into Saturday. As the storm force low
moves north on Saturday this will increase winds across the Bering
to Gales by Saturday evening. This low will spread storm force
winds near the Eastern Aleutians and into the Southern Bering Sea
Saturday into Sunday morning. Additionally, heavy freezing spray
will redevelop by Saturday evening and continue into Sunday across
the Northern Bering near and west of St. Matthew Island which
will affect fishing operations in the area.

Finally, the low will weaken on Sunday as it moves slowly into the
Southern Bering Sea with mainly Gale force winds for Sunday. By
Sunday afternoon winds will decrease to mostly small crafts with
Gales persisting west of St. Matthew Island.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5)... Sunday through Tuesday...

Bering Sea: Heavy freezing spray is likely in the Northern Bering
Sea to Bristol Bay. There is a strong surface low south of the
chain that will result in widespread gale force winds and waves
over 20 feet. The surface low moves north of Dutch Harbor on
Monday. Tuesday this low weakens considerably and wobbles between
the Pribilof Islands and Cold Bay.

Gulf of Alaska: Gusty winds anticipated across the Barren Islands
and Shelikof Strait into Sunday. Monday the models have a 987 mb
low just south of Seward that will move into Prince William Sound.
The models diverge past Monday bringing an element of uncertainty
for the Gulf.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7)...

The forecast period commences with the longwave trough from north
of Alaska extending across the Bering and into the North Pacific.
Aloft there is a closed low near Kamchatka, another closed low
over the Central Aleutians and a third closed low over the Arctic
Ocean. There are numerous weak shortwaves from the Western Bering
to the Alaska Range. Its definitely an unsettled pattern for the
Bering, Gulf and North Pacific. Some of this energy from the
Bering will get ejected from the upper low and push across portions
of Southcentral. The model divergence continues. To hedge,
multiple models were blended to produce the long term forecast.
