Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

An upper level ridge stretches north over the western Alaska coast
into the Chukchi Sea. An upper level low near the Kamchatka
Peninsula has a trough stretching south across the western
Aleutians and far western Bering.

At the surface, an area of weakening low pressure remains south of
Prince William Sound. A ridge stretches south into South Central,
with stratus locked underneath.

Small craft winds and waves occurring in the eastern Bering and
Aleutians.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in fairly good agreement on synoptic features
through the next several days. The system previously expected to
impact Southcentral on Friday now looks like much less of an
impact, with the strongest energy now expected to move east across
the northern Gulf. Biggest concern now is the approaching storm
expected to move across the Aleutians and Bering Saturday night
through Sunday.

&&

.AVIATION...

PANC...Persistent MVFR conditions expected, now likely through
the evening and overnight, with the ridge holding strong. The
stratus in the area will likely erode from both the north and the
south, leaving the last area to clear in the Anchorage area. Winds
will remain light and out of the north.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Synoptic-wise there is a 1047 mb surface high north of the Brooks
Range, the remnants of a low moving inland towards the Yukon
Territory and a weak inverted trough over Prince William Sound.
Anticipate zonal flow aloft over Southcentral this evening into
tonight. Lingering stratus remains over much of the Cook Inlet and
Mat-Su Valley regions and as far north as Talkeetna. An upper
level wave will move into Southcentral Alaska Friday and Saturday
bringing light snowfall to portions of the region. Significant
accumulations not anticipated at this time and some locations will
just see a trace or a dusting. The main sensible weather
highlight will be the persistence of the brutally cold
temperatures through the forecast period. These temperatures are
here to stay for a while.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

Areas of low stratus and fog persist underneath an upper level
ridge for parts of the Southwest, mainly near and just inland
from Bristol Bay. High clouds are working their way around the
upper ridge in the northern Y-K Delta, and there has been some
clearing farther south in places where the low stratus and fog
has broken up. A front and associated shortwave trough are
approaching from the southwest along the southern AKPEN and
eastern Bering, and a new low is forming within this frontal
system just to the south of the Pribilof islands.

The aforementioned low and supporting shortwave will quickly move
into the Southwest tonight into Friday, and winds will pick up to
to around 20 to 30 mph along coastal portions of the Y-K Delta as
the low and frontal wave race north towards Norton Sound. The
potential for significant blowing snow with the gusty winds has
led to the issuance of a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 9
pm this evening until 9 am Friday with coastal areas of the Y-K
Delta expected to see visibility reduced below half a mile at
times due to blowing snow. A quick hitting round of falling snow
will accompany the low passage with around 2 to 4 inches of new
snowfall expected over the Y-K Delta and 0.5 to 2 inches for
Bristol Bay. Snow will quickly end from southwest to northeast as
the system departs into the Seward Peninsula by midday Friday.

Another ridge will build back into place over the region by
Saturday into early Sunday, and this should bring quieter and
colder conditions back into the area for much of the weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

A small craft to low end gale force front is continuing to move
across the eastern Bering with a new low developing along the
boundary south of the Pribilofs. A mix of rain and snow are
following the developing low and frontal system as they continue
to move quickly northeast. This front will weaken as it moves into
the Southwest by Friday afternoon. Behind the front, colder air
will sweep in as a developing ridge settles over the Bering
through early Saturday.

The reprieve from the active weather will not last for long as a
storm force low and its front move into the Western Aleutians and
Bering late Friday into Saturday. Winds will peak Friday night
over the Western Aleutians as high as 55 kt with gusts near
hurricane force possible near Shemya and Attu on Friday night as
the low's front lifts north. Widespread rain and snow will
accompany this system as it moves north and advects much warmer
air into the Bering. The occluding front will continue to cross
the Bering and Central Aleutians through Saturday, but with mainly
gale force winds as the front gradually weakens. The parent low
center will also wrap gale force winds back into the Western
Aleutians by Saturday afternoon as it nears Attu Island.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Sunday through Tuesday)...

Gulf of Alaska: A low exits the Southeast Gulf Sun. Model tracks
are similar, and confidence is good through Tue. Lingering gusty
winds through the lower Shelikof Strait and Sitkinak areas, and
across the Southeast Gulf, both areas diminish late Sun. A weak
trough forms over the Northern Gulf with variable winds through
Tue. Wave heights to 8 feet across the Southern Gulf, subsiding.

Bering Sea: A well developed low and front sweep into the
Northern Bering for Mon. This wind wrapped low and front continues
widespread small craft winds and waves with high end gale force

Bering, subsiding Mon. Model features become mixed, so confidence
is decreasing with a new North Pacific low and front that pushes
into the Central Aleutians and Bering by Tue. Widespread high end
gale force winds with the front into the Central Aleutians and
Bering while the low tracks near the Western Aleutians with a its
wind field through Tue. Wave heights to 27 feet on the Pacific
side, 24 feet on the Bering side through Tue.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Monday through
Thursday)...

The long term forecast begins with the deepening of a polar
trough sliding south the AL-Can border late Sunday. By Monday,
this feature transitions to a closed low situated over the
interior of the state. Temperatures at 850mb will are expected to
drop around -35C in the core of the arctic airmass as another
round of very cold settles across the region. Expect clear and
cold conditions across most of Southcentral and Southwest Alaska
through midweek with daytime high temperatures struggling to reach
zero degrees over the Copper River Basin, single digits and teens
from the Susitna Valley south along Cook Inlet, and 20s along the
immediate coast. Similar temperatures ranges are also expected
from interior Southwest to the Southwest coast and AKPEN. Along
with the colder temperatures, northerly outflow winds will
develop, with the strongest of these winds through the favored
mountain gaps as well as through bay and passes along the
immediate coast.

By late Tuesday into Wednesday, the upper-level low is expected to
continue to drift westward. This would allow a southerly flow to
develop from east to west across Southcentral, bringing moisture
associated with a trough in the Gulf northward. Light snow will be
possible from The Kenai Peninsula north and east across Prince
William Sound and the Copper River Basin Wednesday into Thursday
as the coldest of the arctic air retreats to the northwest.

Farther west, a ridge is expected to build across the eastern
Bering while an upper-level trough persists over the western
Bering. An active weather pattern will continue through midweek
over the western Bering and Aleutians as a series of surface lows
lift over the region from the North Pacific.
