Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

A potent Arctic low was seen on water vapor imagery this morning
across the North Slope. A highly amplified upper level ridge was
present this morning across much of the Bering Sea extending
through much of the southern Mainland of Alaska with the ridge
axis across the eastern Bering and over the YK Delta. As a
result, a mostly clear and moonlit sky is once again present for
the early morning on this last day of January. Some high clouds
were seen streaming into the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta as the ridge
axis pushes east through the area. These high clouds are in
association with a frontal system progressing across the western
Bering Sea.

Since much of the mainland is under the influence of this upper
level ridge, very cold temperatures and some wind was occurring in
some areas. Temperatures across Southwest were generally in the
teens below zero across the YK Delta to single digits and teens
below zero for the Middle Kuskokwim Valley and single digits below
zero for interior Bristol Bay with single numbers along the coast.
For Southcentral, the Susitna Valley and the Copper River Basin
were below zero with single numbers and teens for Anchorage,
Matanuska Valley, and the Kenai Peninsula. Some wind across the
area this morning is helping to keep the atmosphere mixed which
will prevent temperatures from falling all that much like if it
were clear and calm.

Lastly, a gale force frontal system with a great deal of warm air
was seen across the western and central Bering bringing unsettled
weather to the area with mainly rain as the precipitation type.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models remain in good agreement on the synoptic scale features out
through Day 3. The main forecast challenge continues to be how
strong the winds will get out of the bays and passes across
Southcentral, in particular, the Valdez area. As a result, most of
the edits that were made tonight were made in the local effect
areas. Thompson Pass has the potential to meet Wind Chill Advisory
criteria as strong gusty winds are expected later today through
the day on Tuesday though this remains uncertain as this time and
won't be issued with this forecast package. Temperatures will
also be a challenge across Southcentral as where the winds stay up
even by just a little bit won't let temperatures fall nearly as
far if it were calm.

For Southwest, the main forecast challenge will be the frontal
system that continues to move slowly across the Bering Sea.
Questions remain as to what happens when it reaches the Kuskokwim
Delta Coast Monday evening through Tuesday. The NAM is the weakest
(central pressure 996 mb) with a wave of low pressure that
develops along this front with the GFS and EC the strongest with a
central pressure around 990 mb. The Canadian is in the middle
around 994 mb. Depending on how strong/weak this wave of low
pressure is that develops along the front will determine if there
will be precipitation type issues along the Kuskokwim Delta Coast.

.AVIATION...

PANC...VFR conditions and light northerly winds will persist.
Towards the end of this TAF package, we are expecting some gusty
northerly winds upwards of 25 mph to impact the terminal Monday
morning.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Tuesday night)...
A weak short-wave trough tracking east across Southcentral this
morning will bring areas of very light snow to eastern Prince William
Sound and the Copper River Basin. A stronger short-wave ahead of a
polar low dropping southward across northern Alaska today will
dive southeastward and phase with the Southcentral short-wave
over the eastern Copper River Basin. The newly phased trough will
then stall over the Yukon as the polar low drops southward along
the Alcan border tonight and then into the far eastern Gulf on
Monday. This track is much more southerly than models indicated
the past couple days. As a result, expect much stronger cold air
advection across Southcentral this afternoon through tonight along
with a stronger upper level jet and stronger subsidence. In fact,
as the upper low drops into the Gulf Monday through Monday night,
short-waves on the north side of the low will rotate westward
across Southcentral - further enhancing subsidence. Surface
pressure gradients also look quite a bit stronger, with strong
high pressure building southward across mainland Alaska and a
surface low forming over the eastern Gulf. The pressure gradient
between the surface high over the Beaufort Sea and the low in the
Gulf will be approximately 65 mb!

So what does this mean for the weather? Expect much stronger and
more widespread winds along with colder temperatures and wind
chills. The pattern remains particularly favorable for winds
through Thompson Pass and Valdez down through the Valdez narrows
and arm as well as through the Copper River Delta. Have ratcheted
up the strength of these winds to 60 to 65 mph, though if things
become any more favorable they may approach warning level (75
mph). Forcing looks much more favorable for the Matanuska Valley,
so have introduced strong winds for Monday morning through early
Tuesday. These winds will drive southward down Knik Arm, with some
of the winds also making it into north to west Anchorage on
Monday. The general timeline of the wind event is for winds to
begin to increase today with the initial surge of cold air
advection, peak Monday with the best upper level forcing, then
diminish Monday night through Tuesday. All the while, temperatures
will generally be falling. By early Tuesday, expect sub-zero
temperatures across all but the coastline, with temperatures well
below zero inland. Temperatures are extremely difficult to nail
down when accompanied by wind, but wind chill advisory criteria
(-40 degrees) are possible, most likely through broad pass and
Thompson Pass on Monday night. Sub-zero wind chills will settle in
across nearly all of Southcentral tonight and persist through
Tuesday.

It doesn't look like this bitter cold and windy pattern will be
very long-lived, as a trough and surface frontal system move into
the southwest Gulf sometime Tuesday. Confidence in the timing of
this is low, but expect this front to approach Southcentral
Tuesday night/Wednesday. This will lead to increasing clouds,
probable snow, and at least a little bit of warming of
temperatures.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2: Sunday to Tue
morning)...

Another cold day is on tap for Southwest Alaska although highs
should be a few degrees warmer than Saturday due to upper level
clouds trapping in some heat. These upper level clouds are the
precursor to a front that will move in late Monday night. Prior
to the front, northeasterly winds will increase throughout the
area by early Monday morning. This will drop windchill values to
as cold as -30 F in the valley areas throughout mainland
Southwest. Winds over the northern Y-K delta are expected to be
strong on Monday, around 25 to 30 mph, which may cause areas of
blowing snow.

The forecast remains a little fuzzy in regards to
the exact timing of the front and snowfall amounts for the
Southwest coastline. Models have trended a little slower in
timing, with snow beginning in the late Monday night early
Tuesday morning timeframe. Blowing snow is also likely through
Tuesday morning, particularly from Bethel west. Snow will also
reach portions of Bristol Bay, particularly over and to the north
of King Salmon, with the higher amounts west of Dillingham. A
section of warm air aloft may lead to a brief period of sleet or
freezing rain mixed in with snow from Togiak to Cape Newenham. As
mentioned earlier, there is still uncertainty associated with this
front, so stay tuned to further forecast updates.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2: Sunday to
Tue morning)...

A slow moving front will push east from Adak today, reaching the
Akpen late Monday night. Strong southerly winds and rain are
expected along the front, although winds will slowly be decreasing
as the front progresses. Some clearing is likely behind the front
before cold air and spotty snow showers return to the Aleutian
Chain Tuesday morning.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Tuesday through Thursday)...

Gulf of Alaska:

Generally light winds and low seas will persist. Higher winds and
seas through Cook Inlet and out of bays and passes are likely
Tuesday morning, before diminishing.

Aleutians/Bering:

A gale force front will enter the western Bering Tuesday and
slowly track eastward, before dissipating over the central
Aleutians/Bering by Wednesday evening. The progressive pattern
will continue into Thursday, however generally lower winds and
seas will persist.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7: Wednesday through
Saturday)...

Several lows and associated fronts will bring rain/snow showers
across the Bering/Aleutians Wednesday and Thursday. Model
agreement degrades thereafter, but high pressure looks to build
into the central/eastern Aleutians from the North Pacific later in
the week, leading to a brief lull in the active pattern. Farther
east, a front will weaken over the mainland Wednesday, though
light snow accumulations remain possible across Southwest and
Southcentral. There is poor agreement beyond this timeframe,
however another round of snow appears possible Thursday/Friday as
another low moves near Kodiak. The ECMWF shows the aforementioned
high pressure moving over Southcentral by Saturday morning,
however the GFS indicates a low near Bristol Bay. As such,
confidence is generally low.
