mb and moves to 56N 162W at 990 mb. The low dissipates Sun 
afternoon. Its front decays through Mon morning. There is a 977 mb
low at 50N 163E Sun afternoon. The low will move to 51N 173E at 
985 mb for Mon afternoon. Its front sweeps the Aleutians to 
stretch across the Bering and Alaska Peninsula through Mon 
afternoon.

Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Light snow continues to taper off across Southcentral this
afternoon, as upper level southwesterly flow diminishes. A front
moving along the coast of the Kuskokwim Delta is also causing snow
shower activity, which has been locally reducing visibilities down
to a mile at times. Elsewhere, broken clouds are the rule for all
of Mainland Alaska. The stationary vertically stacked low over the
Central Aleutians remains in nearly the exact same place as 24
hours ago. This too is making for abundant broken cloud cover over
all of the Bering Sea. Temperature-wise, generally along the coast
temperatures are at or above freezing, with teens and 20s inland
except the usual cold spot of the Copper River Basin where
temperatures are in the single digits.

The upper levels are a bit less complex this afternoon. Ridging is
in place over the Gulf, with the weak upper level disturbance and
southwesterly flow continues over Southcentral. The vertically
stacked low is keeping a longwave trough over all of the Bering,
though the trough extends all the way south to 30N.

&&

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Large-scale model agreement is very good through Thursday
afternoon, as both the evolution of the low going into the
panhandle (which directly influences the trough driving the snow
band expected over Southcentral), and the front tracking across
the Bering are both in very good alignment. As usual, the model
discrepancies of much smaller scale features add significant
uncertainty to the forecast. The main feature of note will be the
development of a deformation band somewhere over Southcentral,
but most likely in the Anchorage, Northern Kenai, and Mat-Su
Valleys area. However, with spread as far west as Kenai-Soldotna,
and as far east as Prince William Sound, there is significant
uncertainty where this feature sets up. However, confidence is
decently high that this feature will develop, as it is reflected
in many of the model solutions. The other factor with this snow
band is the timing, as it has been highly variable. As of this
writing, the consensus with that is that the band develops early
Thursday morning, persists through the day, and gradually tapers
off Thursday night, though remnant upslope activity could keep
snow showers lingering in the mountains into Friday morning.

&&

.AVIATION...

PANC...MVFR ceilings will be predominant over the airport through
this evening. Periods of very light freezing drizzle are also
possible, but should not amount to any notable ice accumulations.
Late tonight, VFR ceilings will return as the flow in the mid-
levels turns southeasterly. Meanwhile a northerly flow will
persist at the surface, causing wind shear conditions which will
persist into Wednesday morning before tapering off. A stray snow
shower cannot be ruled out during this time. Looking ahead,
another round of steady snow with likely IFR conditions are
expected early Thursday morning through the day.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3: Today
through Friday Afternoon)...

A long fetch of southerly moisture ahead of a broad low over the
Central Aleutians will bring rain to Kodiak Island this evening.
The frontal system will quickly track northeastward overnight into
Wednesday morning leading to periods of heavy precipitation along
the Southern Kenai Peninsula and coastal Prince William Sound.
Gusty southeasterly winds are also likely over higher terrain and
through mountain gaps. These will diminish through Wednesday
morning. An inverted through is expected to form over Anchorage
and the Matanuska Valley as a result of this flow pattern. However
as this is not overly strong (or due easterly), some overrunning
is possible and thus a dusting of snow cannot be ruled out for
early Wednesday morning. Accumulation is more certain in the
Northern and Western Susitna Valley.

Precipitation types along the immediate coast remain tricky,
however confidence is growing for snow to transition to a
rain/snow mix or all rain by Wednesday afternoon. This will lessen
the overall snow totals, though up to a foot is still expected in
Whittier. Significant amounts are also possible in Valdez, however
if temperatures warm even slightly higher than the forecast,
mixing will result in lower totals there as well. A strong low
tracking west of the panhandle will allow for the precipitation
field to shift slightly westward into Thursday. Again, snow will
transition to a mix by afternoon along the coast. Both rain and
snow totals will be lower than the previous day as precipitation
will taper off by Thursday evening.

Models are coming into better agreement for a deformation band
setting up over Anchorage and the Mat-Su Thursday morning. This is
always difficult to pinpoint even in the very near term. While the
current forecast shows 2-3 inches, this could change significantly
one way or the other depending on subsequent model data. Stronger
offshore flow will develop by Friday, finally leading to mostly
sunny skies across Southcentral. However, snow will continue
across the Copper River Basin under an upper level trough.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 through 3)...

A wave of upper level energy will move northward across Southwest
Alaska tonight and tomorrow bringing snow to the area. The
offshore flow pattern will continue across the Kuskokwim Delta and
Bristol Bay which will keep the cold air in place and allow the
precipitation type to remain as snow. Overnight lows tonight will
remain around freezing along coastal Bristol Bay, however there is
no warm layer aloft which will furthermore keep this precipitation
as snow. Temperatures tonight will be much colder across the
Kuskokwim Delta. Snow amounts will generally remain as a coating
to an inch across the Kuskokwim Delta and 1-3" across Bristol Bay.
The highest amounts which will range from 2-4" will be over the
Ahlkun and Kilbuck Mountains. For the remainder of the period, dry
offshore flow will result in cold temperatures and quiet weather.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 through 3)...

The low pressure system currently remaining stationary over the
Central Aleutians continues to weaken as the low is vertically
stacked as well as the center of this low is significantly
decoupled from the core of the jet. This decoupling significantly
decreases the synoptic scale forces that force the cyclonic
rotation of this low as there will be less differences in the wind
speed between the southeast and northwest flanks of this low. The
next synoptic feature will be a front moving into the Western
Bering/Aleutians on Thursday. This front will bring widespread
gale force winds to the Western and Central Bering/Aleutians on
Thursday. The front will rapidly weaken over the Eastern
Bering/Aleutians on Friday, resulting in the gale force winds to
weaken to below gale force.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5: Friday through Sunday)...

Bering Sea: A gale force frontal system is expected to remain
fairly stationary across the Northern Bering Sea south of Saint
Matthew Island for Friday. This front will then slowly weaken
Saturday and continuing into Sunday. Fairly quiet weather is
expected for the Central and Southern Bering with less than 35 kts
winds and less than 20ft seas. With the same pattern remaining in
place through the forecast period, heavy freezing spray will
continue to be an issue near the ice edge.

Gulf of Alaska: Small craft advisory level westerly winds are
expected for Friday with possibly gale force winds out of the
Barren Islands area. Seas are expected to be under 20 ft. A
stronger storm system with the potential for widespread gale force
winds and high seas greater than 20 ft may impact the Gulf of
Alaska sometime in the Saturday to Sunday time frame but
uncertainty remains in the exact details.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 3 through 7: Saturday through Tuesday)...

The long term forecast period pattern continues to resemble an
Arctic trough/low pressure extending from the Arctic Ocean
southwestward across much of the Alaska Mainland. With this strong
Arctic High in place, the jet stream is expected to remain
generally south of the Alaska Mainland over the North Pacific.
This will keep the storm track progressive from west to east
across the Aleutian Island Chain and through the Southern Bering
keeping the weather active for those areas. For the Alaska
Mainland, cold air is expected to dominate much of the period as
the Arctic trough holds strong. This means much colder than normal
temperatures for this time period with outflow winds for
Southcentral. However, there continues to remain discrepancies on
the individual storms and subtle upper level shortwaves that may
try and come northward to bring some snow to Southcentral areas.
This will largely be determined by the strength of the Arctic
Trough to the north. If it is stronger it would most likely
suppress everything southward and keep the system offshore
whereas if its weaker some of these features might try to come
northward and bring some snow to Southcentral.

Towards the end of the forecast period going into Tuesday, there
are hints of a pattern change. Model guidance is showing the jet
stream coming further north (some guidance is more amplified than
other guidance) which would yield milder temperatures (closer to
normal) with the potential for an active storm track. The details
on each of these storm systems remains very uncertain.
Nevertheless, potential exists for a snowier and milder period
beginning around Tuesday next week. However, there remains a great
deal of variability with the pattern. Model guidance tends to
move things along too fast when indicating a pattern change,
therefore, stay tuned for the latest updates.
