Southcentral and Southwest Alaska Forecast Discussion

.ANALYSIS AND UPPER LEVELS...

Generally speaking the jet stream has become more zonal in
comparison to days prior; however, weak troughing exists over the
Bering Sea with ridging over the Gulf. A vertically stacked low
continues to weaken over the central Bering this morning as its
negatively tilted frontal trough moves across the southern Alaska
Mainland. Cold air advection south of the low can be seen on
satellite in the form of open cell cumulus moving east over the
Aleutian Chain. The two radars over Southwest Alaska indicate that
snow is tapering off, while the Kenai and Middleton Island Radars
have filled in as the front moves into the area. Surface
observations have reported snow across coastal areas of
Southcentral and north into the Mat-Su Valleys. The forecast focus
will be on where a triple point low develops along the front as
it moves over Kodiak Island.

.MODEL DISCUSSION...

Models are in good agreement for synoptic scale features and
moderate agreement for smaller scale details. Each model continues
to hold true within its on solution with the NAM having a more
progressive and northerly low track and the GFS having a slower
and southerly track. The primary difference is if and when the
upper level vorticity max gets separated from the frontal trough.
The 50 mile spread in low center has considerable differences for
snow over the eastern Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island. The ECMWF
and the Canadian models are somewhere in-between the North
American models.

.AVIATION...

PANC...Snow and MVFR ceilings are likely early this morning.
Downsloping is expected to become dominant, which will bring an
end to the snow and return ceilings to VFR; however, it's
possible a snow shower may briefly move over the terminal this
morning, temporarily lowering visibility and returning ceilings
to MVFR conditions. Light northerly winds are likely later in the
day as surface winds become impacted by the low in the western
Gulf.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHCENTRAL ALASKA (Days 1 through 3/Today
through Saturday night)...

A weak low near the south end of Kodiak Island will strengthen as
it tracks just east of the island today. An upper level low will
form overhead this afternoon which will shear apart the short-wave
trough tracking toward Southcentral. As a result, light snow over
interior Southcentral will diminish through the day. Confidence
remains low in the track of the low to the northwest Gulf. The
exact track will determine where the deformation band on the back
side of the low sets up. Right now it looks to be somewhere over
far north end of Kodiak Island and Afognak Island, shifting north
and east over the Gulf by this evening. In this scenario, which is
what is reflected in the latest forecast, Kodiak City will be
right on the southern edge and may see a brief period of snow and
blowing snow with reduced visibilities. However, one model
solution shows the band sitting over Kodiak City all afternoon and
evening. If that were to occur then blizzard conditions would be
likely. Meanwhile, the low position will also affect snowfall
amounts over the eastern Kenai Peninsula. For now, the forecast
package holds a middle ground solution. If the low tracks farther
north, then amounts would be higher, while if it tracks farther
south then amounts will be lower. In any case, the heaviest snow
will be right along Prince William Sound, including Whittier. Will
closely monitor low track today and update forecasts if
necessary, so stay tuned if you live in the aforementioned areas.

The low will remain nearly stationary over the northwest Gulf
tonight through Friday, before exiting southward Friday night
as a high amplitude ridge approaches from the west. Thus, expect
snow along the coast through Friday, followed by drying Friday
night. Localized gap winds will develop along the coast in the
wake of the low. A short-wave rounding the top of the upper ridge,
will drop southward across Southcentral Saturday night into
Sunday. This will bring a chance of snow ahead of the trough,
while cold air advection and strengthening offshore flow behind
the trough will lead to an uptick in gap winds. Falling
temperatures can be expected as we head through the weekend and
into the beginning of next week.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST SOUTHWEST ALASKA (Days 1 and 2)...

Snowfall has moved inland as seen on radar this morning, with
coastal locations seeing low fog and stratus via satellite and
observations. Snow will continue to taper through the day as the
front continues to weaken as it moves eastward and out of the
area. Expect showery conditions throughout the day as the low
center approaches the Kuskokwim Delta this evening. Tomorrow,
expect drier conditions to prevail across the region to start the
weekend.

.SHORT TERM FORECAST BERING SEA/ALEUTIANS (Days 1 and 2)...

Widespread gales and a wintry mix of precipitation continue
across the Bering Sea and the Aleutian Chain as the low in the
north-central Bering weakens. As the low center approaches the
Kuskokwim Delta this evening, more of the same will continue,
though largely across the central and eastern Aleutians by this
time. Behind this, cold air advection will overtake the Bering and
Aleutians maintaining a showery pattern across the region, with
strong winds through gaps and passes along the eastern Aleutians
and the Alaska Peninsula. The next frontal system approaches the
western Aleutians tomorrow afternoon bringing warm temperatures,
chances for rainfall, and an increase to winds and waves to the
area.

.MARINE (Days 3 through 5 - Saturday through Monday)...

Gulf of Alaska - Minor model differences exist, but confidence is
good through the period. A series of weak lows rotate around the
Gulf through Mon. Widespread northwesterly small craft winds with
areas of gale force winds from the Alaska Peninsula over the
Western Gulf diminish Mon. Gustier winds near small craft remain
through the Barren Islands on Mon. Wave heights to 18 feet over
the Southern Gulf subsiding Mon.

Aleutians / Bering - Minor model differences exist, but
confidence is good through the period. The Southwest Alaska low
maintains a good gradient over the Eastern Bering through Sun.
Widespread northerly small craft winds with areas of gale force
winds near the Alaska Peninsula diminish Sun. Wave heights to 14
feet near the Alaska Peninsula Sun. A well developed Western
Bering front moves across the Aleutians and Bering through Mon.
Widespread southeasterly small craft winds with areas of gale
force winds increase to high end gale force winds with pockets of
storm force winds over the Central Bering Sun, diminishing in the
Eastern Bering Mon. Wave heights to 24 feet spread over the
Aleutians and Bering through Mon.

.LONG TERM FORECAST (Days 4 through 7)...

A pattern change is expected during the extended forecast period.
Teleconnections support the upper level trough that will extend
across Southcentral on Sunday to shift eastward as upper level
ridging moves across the Alaska mainland on Monday and encompasses
all of Southcentral and Southwest Alaska on Tuesday and Wednesday.
At the same time, the upper level ridging over the
Bering/Aleutians on Sunday will move eastward as an upper trough
moves over the western Bering/Aleutians on Monday. This upper
trough over the western Bering/Aleutians will persist through
Wednesday. This pattern change will cause a gradual increase in
temperatures across Southcentral and Southwest from this weekend
into the middle of next week. The pattern will also remain dry for
Southcentral and Southwest as offshore flow persists through the
area. Meanwhile for the Bering/Aleutians, the primary low tracks
are expected to remain in the far western Bering/Aleutians as the
upper trough will help provide a more favorable environment for
low pressure systems. There is good ensemble and deterministic
agreement in both the Rossby Wave pattern and the placement of the
lows in the western Bering/Aleutians, thus forecast confidence is
above average.

...POTENTIAL FOR SNOW AND BLOWING SNOW THIS AFTERNOON...

There is potential for snow and blowing snow beginning around
noon and continuing through the afternoon hours, which could
severely reduce visibilities and create difficult travel
conditions. A storm will pass just east of Kodiak Island today,
and a band of snow and blowing snow will set up on the back side
of the low. Confidence in the exact position of this band remains
low, however Kodiak City and areas to the north are most likely to
see the snow along with gusty northwest winds of 25 to 35 mph.

At this time, it appears that the low will take a more southerly
route across the Gulf. If these conditions do develop in Kodiak
City, they will be short lived, as satellite imagery currently
shows some of the heaviest bands of snow are forming just offshore
to the east of Kodiak City. However, if the heaviest bands trend
further to the west, then the snow and blowing snow duration
could be much longer.
