Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 1110 AM MDT Sat Jun 26 2021 .AVIATION... 18Z TAF CYCLE Upper trough carving out over CO and NM. Moist low level ely flow. Sct showers and tstsm developing over the higher terrain and tracking genly from nw to se. Terrain occasionally obscured in the stronger storms, with potential for severe storms with large hail and wind gusts to 50 kt east of the central mt chain. Convection to persist aft 27/03Z over the ne half of NM, and forcing a gusty ely wind into the RGV including at KABQ and KSAF. Areas MVFR to IFR cigs/vsbys in rain and br along and east of the central mt chain aft 27/06Z. && .PREV DISCUSSION...330 AM MDT Sat Jun 26 2021... .SYNOPSIS... The North American Monsoon looks to kick in this weekend through next week with daily rounds of scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms capable of producing locally heavy rainfall, especially along and east of the continental divide. Rain amounts Saturday through Friday should commonly reach 0.25 to 1.50 inches, with heavier amounts of 2 to over 3 inches across the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and along and east of the south central mountains. The potential exists for flash flooding to develop, especially in complex terrain, below recent burn scars, and in urban areas. There will also be a risk of severe thunderstorms along and east of the central mountain chain on today, then again during the latter half of the work week. Further, this weekend through Tuesday, a gusty east wind is forecast to develop below canyons opening into the central valley with speeds potentially reaching 45 mph at times in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...(TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY)... An upper-level trough (yes, it's late June) dropping through eastern UT/western CO will combine with a backdoor front/boundary and daytime heating to get scattered thunderstorms to develop mainly over the Sangre de Cristo mountains and central highlands. These storms are forecast to move/propagate east southeast during the afternoon hours. Large hail and strong wind gusts will be the main threat from severe storms but a rouge tornado is not out of the question given Energy-Helicity Index (EHI) values greater than 1.0 in Mora and San Miguel counties progged by the 06Z HRRR. Meanwhile, in central and western NM, a few high based showers and thunderstorms move in along/near the upper-level trough axis as is slides south-southeastward through these areas. Rain and hail cooled air in eastern NM creates quite the temperature and pressure difference across the state this evening. As a result, moderate to locally strong east canyon winds develop in the RGV just prior to sunset, brining deep Gulf moisture in from the east. This moisture combines with another short-wave trough dropping into northwest NM Sunday to generate scattered, slow moving wet thunderstorms. Brief heavy rain, small hail and flash flooding will be the main hazards from the storms Sunday afternoon and evening. 33 LONG TERM...(SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY)... A number of ingredients are coming together for slow-moving thunderstorms with heavy rain along and east of the continental divide early in the coming week. With high pressure systems over the Pacific northwest and east/southeast US, and a deep upper level trough stretching from NE NM to the Hudson Bay, a col will set up over much of NM Sunday night through Tuesday. Meanwhile, rich low- level moisture will continue to stream into the state from the east and southeast, while multiple disturbances in the flow aloft track overhead. At this time, repeated bouts of moderate to heavy rain look to favor the south central mountains east and northeastward across the Caprock and southeast plains each period Sunday night through Tuesday, where 1 to 2.25 inches of rain are expected with locally heavier amounts. The Sangre de Cristo Mountains are also expected to receive around 0.75 to 1.5 inches with widespread wetting precip elsewhere, except for spotty wetting precip from Gallup to Farmington. The potential will exist for flash flooding to develop, especially in areas of complex terrain, below recent burn scars, and in southeastern urban areas like Roswell, Clovis and Portales. The upper level trough is forecast to dominate the upper level flow over the state Tuesday night through Friday. The low level easterly flow will gradually veer more out of the south Tuesday night through Wednesday, then a moist backdoor cold front is forecast to plunge through the state Thursday and Thursday night. Thus, scattered to numerous thunderstorms capable of producing locally heavy rainfall will continue daily. Storm motions should flow more toward the south and southeast, and they may pickup speed during mid-to-late week. 44 && .FIRE WEATHER... No fire weather concerns for at least the next week thanks to plentiful Gulf moisture combining with weak upper-level troughs moving south from eastern UT and western CO. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will become the rule starting Sunday afternoon areawide. The potential exists for flash flooding below recent burn scars in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday Sunday through Tuesday, daily rounds of scattered-to-numerous showers and thunderstorms will be capable of producing locally heavy rainfall along and east of the continental divide. Some of the heaviest rain is expected over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and along and east of the south central mountains, where rain accumulation should generally reach 0.75 to 2.25 inches with locally heavier amounts. The potential exists for flash flooding to develop, especially in complex terrain, below recent burn scars, and in urban parts of the southeast like Roswell, Clovis, and Portales.
