Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service Albuquerque NM 1229 AM MDT Mon Aug 2 2021 .AVIATION... 06Z TAF CYCLE Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will generally move toward the south at speeds around 5-10 kts through the overnight hours. MVFR to IFR conditions are likely tonight along the east slopes of the central mountain chain and possibly across the southeast plains. Monday's crop of scattered to numerous afternoon convection will favor the northern and western mountains, moving out over the lower basins and valleys after 03/00Z. && .PREV DISCUSSION...315 PM MDT Sun Aug 1 2021... .SYNOPSIS... A Flash Flood Watch remains in effect for portions of western and central New Mexico through late tonight. The heavy rainfall threat will be in response to a backdoor cold front that brought increased moisture to the region Saturday into Saturday night. Meanwhile, the upper high directly over the area is allowing for slow and erratic storm motions, especially in the west. That said, the very active weather pattern will persist into the early work week period as the upper high shifts to the west, opening the door for a disturbance to migrate southward through the eastern plains. This will enhance the threat for shower and thunderstorm activity along with a threat for localized flash flooding. The middle to latter part of the week will favor reduced storm coverage as drier air works into the state. && .DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...(TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT)... With temperatures struggling to reach 70 degrees across northeast parts of the ongoing Flash Flood Watch, we will trim a few zones with the afternoon package. The risk of Flash Flooding persists over western and southeast areas. Temperatures will continue to cool Monday over western and southern areas, but readings will warm a few to 7 degrees above today's readings over east central and northeast areas as the winds veer out of the south there. With the 500 mb high pressure center over Las Vegas, NV, storms will move toward the south and south southeast over NM on Monday. An upr level trough approaching the Four Corners from the Great Salt Lake will invigorate showers and thunderstorms over western and north central NM Monday afternoon and evening triggering scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, some capable of locally heavy rainfall. Another active area will be along and southeast of the south central mountains. However, there will be little if any convection over far east central and northeast areas. 44 LONG TERM...(TUESDAY THROUGH SUNDAY)... Main forecast concern will be the coverage for storms and attendant flash flood threat for Tuesday into Wednesday, then determining how much dry air will work into the area for mid/late week and how this will influence storm coverage across the CWFA. Deterministic and ensemble guidance are highly consistent with the 500hPa high positioned over southern NV/CA by 00Z/Wed, supporting a general north to south flow across NM. As a result, the shortwave in the upr flow mentioned in the Short Term Discussion will slowly drift southward across northeast/east central NM. PWATs across the far ern plains are progged to range from 0.75-1.00 inch on Mon, but low/mid- level return flow will support modest moisture advection across this area on Tue, sending PWATs into the 1.25-1.50 inch range. As forcing from the disturbance increases combined with added moisture, a flash flood threat will re-emerge across this region once again. N/NW flow is notorious for severe weather potential; however, the latest SREF suggests only 750 J/kg of MLCAPE and 0-6km bulk shear <30 knots. So while a strong to severe storm or two cannot be ruled out, the risk for widespread activity appears rather limited at this time. Forcing will allow activity to persist well into Tues night in the northeast zones, which may further enhance the flash flood risk due to a lack of a significant break in pcpn. For Wed, the upr high remains anchored in the same general location, though its axis will likely pivot to more of a southwest to northeast orientation. Meanwhile, the upr level disturbance plaguing NM should be sagging southward through east central or southeast NM. There are some differences in the timing of its progression in the guidance and this will have a significant influence on PoPs across central/eastern NM. Drier air will start to work into the Four Corners region during this time, sending PWATs into the 0.50-0.75 inch range. Thus, a very sharp pcpn gradient could setup across the CWFA. The upper ridge rolls eastward by Thursday as a closed low in the ern Pacific migrates into the PacNW. As a result, the disturbance over NM will get a boot to the east. Significantly drier air invades the CWA as a result, sending coverage of storms into the isolated to possibly scattered range. Further flattening of the ridge is progged by global models for Friday with monsoonal moisture being trapped in northwest Mexico. A potential moisture squeeze play may occur for next weekend, with an upper high situated over the western Gulf coast and trough in the PacNW. How far south the trough digs and where the moisture axis will be oriented will play a significant factor on which locales will be at greatest risk for storms. Pinpointing those specific details is nearly impossible at this time frame, but something to watch. DPorter && .FIRE WEATHER... The wet monsoon pattern will continue through Thursday mainly along and east of the continental divide as the high pressure system aloft builds west of NM and repeated disturbances pass south/southeastward over the forecast area. A couple of especially convectively active periods will be Tuesday and Wednesday as an upper level trough tracks slowly over the state from the north northwest. There will be a significant downtick in the coverage and wetness of showers and thunderstorms Thursday and Friday as the 500 mb high pressure center builds over NM and moisture recycles. However, models depict the upper high shifting eastward over TX next weekend with a more traditional monsoon moisture plume streaming north and northeastward out of Mexico.
