.SYNOPSIS...Dry conditions and record breaking heat continues
through the remainder of Labor Day weekend across the Desert
Southwest. A brief break from the heat will come midweek along with
gusty northerly winds, particularly down the Colorado River Valley.
Temperatures will heat back up to the triple digits by the end of
the week into next weekend.
&&

.UPDATE...Forecast continues to remain on track with another day of
record breaking temperatures. Smoke continues to pour over the
Sierra and into the Owens Valley, reducing visibility to under a
mile at times, particularly around Bishop from the Creek Fire.
Additional smoke is making its way into the Owens Valley from the
SQF Complex and Rattlesnake Fires. The excessive heat warning
continues for many locations through Monday.
&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Labor Day.
Daily heat records were broken at all of our climate sites
yesterday, with Kingman, AZ, Barstow-Daggett, CA and Death Valley
National Park breaking all-time September records as well. This will
continue to be the case for the remainder of Labor Day weekend, as
the lingering ridge of high pressure remains over the Desert
Southwest.

Smoke has funneled down into the Owens Valley this evening, bringing
Bishop Airport down to a 4 statute mile visibility that is expected
to continue through the remainder of the overnight hours and into
tomorrow. Used HRRR smoke to fill in portions of southwestern Nevada
and southeastern California with patchy smoke through the morning
and early afternoon. Cloud development over the higher terrain
expected again this afternoon, though nothing in the way of
precipitation expected. That said, an isolated brief thunderstorm
cannot be ruled out over the eastern Sierra in far northwestern
Inyo County.

Ahead of the incoming cold front late Monday into early Tuesday,
northerly winds will begin to push through the southern Great Basin
on Monday. Due to potential wind speeds 15-25 mph with gusts to 35
mph coupled with critically dry relative humidities, we have issued
a Fire Weather Watch for our northern zones (Esmeralda, southern Nye
and northern Lincoln counties) Monday that will continue through
Tuesday.

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday.
No surprises offered up by the latest GEFS guidance.
Timing/placement of potent trough digging south through the
northern/central Rockies Monday/Tuesday has stayed consistent. Cold
front slicing through the region will usher in a period of strong
winds along with much cooler temperatures Tuesday/Wednesday that may
jolt the senses.

Wind: Along and just behind the cold front, the GFS shows several 50
kt wind flags over southern Clark and northeastern San Bernardino
counties Tuesday. ECMWF Ensemble meteogram for KIFP shows a 12 hour
period between 11 am and 11 pm Tuesday of wind gusts of 50 mph or
greater for Laughlin/Bullhead City. The winds will create concerns
for land management agencies, boaters and travelers. Fuels remain
ripe to burn and the onset of high winds and low RH is not a good
combination. Therefore, a Fire Weather Watch has been issued for the
entire southern Great Basin and Mojave Desert on Tuesday through
Tuesday evening. Thank goodness the cold front arrives after Labor
Day so everyone could enjoy the area lakes, because 3-4 foot
significant wave heights are forecast for Lake Mead, Lake Mohave and
Lake Havasu on Tuesday due to wind gusts ranging from 50 to 60 mph
along portions of the Colorado River Valley. As a result, we have
hoisted a High Wind Watch for these zones from 6 am to 6 pm on
Tuesday; boating conditions will be dangerous and winds will make
travel difficult for high profile vehicles. Look for additional wind
products coming out of this office in the coming days, as models
continue to resolve potential wind and wind gust speeds.

Temperatures: GEFS shows a 15-25 degree temperature change between
Labor Day and Tuesday for northwestern Arizona, southern Nevada and
eastern San Bernardino County. Less cooling further west in Inyo
County, Esmeralda County, and the western Mojave Desert where
temperatures drop around 10-15 degrees. As the trough weakens and
shifts east late week into the weekend, temperatures will quickly
recover back above normal under a ridge of high pressure.

.FIRE WEATHER...A cold front will push through the region and bring
with it gusty north-northwesterly winds. The winds will first pick
up in our northern zones (Esmeralda, southern Nye, Lincoln County)
on Monday, but will become widespread, encompassing our entire
forecast area on Tuesday. Due to the critically dry low-levels,
these winds will enhance fire danger concerns. As a result, we have
issued a Fire Weather Watch for our northern zones on Monday,
followed by the remainder of our forecast area on Tuesday. Wind
gusts will range from 35 to 45 mph in most regions, with higher
elevations as well as along the Colorado River Valley seeing gusts
in excess of 50 mph.

.AVIATION...For McCarran...Minimal impacts expected again today for
KLAS however winds will likely differ from typical diurnal patterns.
Light and variable winds are expected initially before becoming
generally easterly this afternoon as usual, however, by late this
afternoon, a shift to west-northwest winds aoa 8-10 kts is possible
which could persist through the early morning hours tomorrow.
Tomorrow afternoon, northerly winds are expected to move in, staying
generally at or below 10 kts. So while winds should stay relatively
light, directions are expected to be atypical. Winds will increase
substantially Tuesday and out of the north as a cold front moves in.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...Most significant impacts regionally will be focused on
KBIH as smoke from the Creek Fire have spread over the Sierra crest
and filtered down the Owens Valley. Visibility has been reduced to
1SM at times this morning and wind projections show that smoke
impacts could keep visibility fluctuating between MVFR/IFR
conditions through the TAF period. Elsewhere, VFR with minimal
impacts expected.
