Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
737 PM PDT Sat Sep 5 2020
.SYNOPSIS...Hot and dry with record breaking heat in many
locations across the across the Desert Southwest through Labor Day
weekend. We will get brief respite from the heat on Tuesday and
Wednesday when temperatures will briefly drop to below normal
levels. The lower temperatures will be accompanied by strong north
winds on Tuesday, especially down the Colorado River Valley.
Temperatures will increase once again toward the end of the work
week.
&&
.UPDATE...Expansive 600 dm H5 ridge over the Intermountain West
lead to another day of multiple daily record highs. In fact 3
climate stations, Kingman, Barstow and Death Valley NP all
established monthly record high temperatures for September. Those
could be short-lived as record temperatures remain in the forecast
through Labor Day.
Did see two thunderstorms briefly flare up over Yavapai County, AZ.
Some of that moisture along with possible debris clouds from Arizona
will work west across southern California tonight. No update this
evening as forecast is in good shape.
&&
.SHORT TERM...Today through Labor Day.
Very little change to the short term forecast. The area of strong
high pressure will slowly drift to the west across Nevada on Sunday
and toward the California coast by Monday. The excessive heat
warning and heat advisories remain in place with no changes. Several
location have already broke their record high temperatures today
including Las Vegas and Kingman. Kingman broke their previous record
of 104 by 11 am this morning. Additional records are likely to fall
through Monday. I'd like to reiterate to folks who are spending time
outdoors to hydrate frequently (even if they don't feel thirsty),
stay in the shade when possible, and limit outdoor activity to the
cooler parts of the day. There have been some shallow cumulus
development this afternoon across the Mojave Preserve, and the
higher terrain of Clark and central Mohave Counties. Similar clouds
are expected again on Sunday afternoon with a bit more enhancement
over the eastern Sierra, where an isolated thunderstorm cannot be
completely ruled out.
.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday.
The cool down on Tuesday is still on track with relatively strong
north winds pushing into the entire region on Tuesday behind a cold
frontal passage. Ensembles and guidance continues to indicate that
high temperatures will be 20 to 25 degrees lower on Tuesday in
comparison to Monday. At this point wind advisories will be likely
across portions of the area on Tuesday with wind gusts in excess of
40 mph likely. The strongest winds are expected down the Colorado
River Valley where localized gusts of 50 mph are possible. This will
produce rough conditions and waves of 2 to 3 feet on both Lake Mead
and Lake Mohave on Tuesday. Wednesday will provide another day mild
day with temperatures generally 4 to 6 degrees below normal.
Northerly winds will continue down the Colorado River Valley on
Wednesday, but will be lighter with gusts of 30 to 35 mph. The cool
down will be short lived though as high pressure begins to move back
in on Thursday, providing a return of above normal temperatures into
the next weekend.
.FIRE WEATHER...
On Monday north to northwest winds will begin to develop across
Esmeralda, central Nye and Lincoln counties by late morning and
persist into the evening hours. Conditions will be near red flag
criteria in those locations and we have gone ahead and issued a Fire
Weather Watch for Monday. Strong north winds are expected across the
entire are on Tuesday with gusts of 35 to 45 mph and localized gusts
in excess of 50 mph. Relative humidity values will generally fall to
values between 6 and 12 percent on both Monday and Tuesday.
