Kept forecast adjustments to a minimum this evening, as the current forecast is generally on track. Have lowered lows in some of the southwest Montana mountain valleys (Elk Park, Big Hole, Centennial, mostly), as radiational cooling will be fairly efficient there, with mainly high clouds expected to move overhead tonight. Have also increased the overnight relative humidity there to better reflect similarly high values there last night. Only other adjustment was to increase winds a bit through midnight over the plains, as they have not temporarily decoupled this evening before the lower/mid level winds were expected to increase after midnight. Coulston && .SYNOPSIS... Brisk westerly flow will reside over the region for the next couple days. Expect windy conditions over the northern and central plains, with a chance of snow over the central mountains. Generally above normal temperatures are expected across the region as well over the next couple days. && .AVIATION... Updated 1044 PM MST Sun Mar 01 2020 (02/06Z TAF Period) An increasingly moist northwesterly flow aloft will bring mountain top obscuring clouds and snow to the Continental Divide and areas of mid and high clouds over the remainder of the region. VFR conditions are generally expected for a majority of the TAF period. However, ceilings over far southwest Montana (KBZN KEKS KWYS) should lower close to, but not quite reaching, MVFR levels after 20Z. Winds off the surface will increase more rapidly than at the surface, making low level wind shear likely over north central and central Montana through around 17Z. However, winds over the plains will still be quite gusty, especially for KCTB. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 258 PM MST Sun Mar 1 2020/ Tonight through Wednesday Night...A brief ridge has brought quiet conditions across the region this afternoon and will continue through this evening. Only a few isolated mountain snow showers are possible through tonight, with mild overnight lows expected. This ridge is short lived as another clipper system looks to push across the area tonight through Monday. This could bring some snow showers to the Rocky Mountain Front, along with increased winds. The strength of these winds are still only met with moderate confidence. There is high confidence the gradient of this wave could produce widespread winds gusts 35 to near 50 MPH across the northern and the central areas. However, some models indicate as a surface low moves east across the Canadian prairies the resultant gradient could create a barrier jet along the Rocky Mountains and perhaps bring stronger winds over 50 MPH across the high plains and foothill areas. Confidence on this is moderate right now given the general northwest flow pattern so will hold off on any highlights, although will need to be closely monitored. Monday night through Tuesday then sees lingering northwest flow turn to a strengthening westerly flow. The result will be warming temperatures, some mountain snow showers, and continued breezy to windy conditons. Strong winds are again possible during this time period, and across much of the CWA. Confidence is again only moderate given the northwest flow, and not high enough for any wind products at this time. Another clipper system to the north then turns the flow more westerly and quite strong for Tuesday night into Wednesday. Right now this is the time period of the expected strongest winds and the most widespread impacts. A weak frontal boundary with this feature could also bring more mountain snow showers, and perhaps some scattered shower activity to the lower elevations. Impacts from snow may be found along the Rocky Mountain Front for Tuesday into Wednesday, especially at and above pass level. With the mentioned front temperatures Wednesday may be slightly cooler, but still above seasonal normals. Anglin Thursday through Sunday...The end of the work week will see warming temperatures and mainly dry conditions. Winds may be breezy at times, although not quite as windy as during the start of the week. Friday looks to be the warmest day of the upcoming week with highs back in the mid to upper 50s, and some 60s in the north and central. A broad scale trough then looks to push across the western US this week possible brining a slight cool down and the next chances for widespread precipitation. A cold front with this system could transition the precipitation into widespread snow Saturday night into Sunday, which may be worth watching for potential impacts to travel and those outdoors.
