.UPDATE...
No changes to the going forecast this morning as everything
appears to remain on track for the next 24-48 hours. Reviewing the
latest forecast information for possible Wind Advisories for
Sunday for some zones surrounding the current High Wind Warning
in Southwest and west-central Utah with the afternoon forecast
package. Also reviewing the latest forecast information on
precipitation behind the cold front across northern Utah. Forecast
trends have shown higher precipitation amounts, and may need to
increase PoPs Sunday night into Monday morning as well.

.SYNOPSIS...
Weak high pressure will bring warmer and drier weather across the
area today. A strong and unseasonably cold storm system will
impact the Great Basin Sunday through early next week. A new
trough will form over the PACNW by Thursday and this will set up a
potentially moist southerly flow over eastern Utah.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Tuesday)...
A ridge will build over the area today with temperatures warming
to 6 to 10 degrees above normal under mostly sunny skies. There
will be enough residual moisture over the southern mountains and
the Uintas this afternoon, for isolated thunderstorms.

The unseasonably strong trough will work its way into the northern
Great Basin Sunday resulting in strong winds over much of the
area. The associated cold front will sink down into northwest Utah
Sunday afternoon and into southwest Utah by middle of Sunday
night. Wind gusts in excess of 50 mph are expected over the
western valleys south of I-80 Sunday into Sunday evening while
gusts up to 40 mph are possible over eastern and south central
Utah. Blowing dust along with smoke from current fires in western
central Utah may cause restricted visibilities Sunday afternoon
along the I-15 corridor from Cedar City to Nephi.

Strong dynamics along with PW values of 0.75 to 1.00 will bring
widespread showers to northern Utah Sunday night through midday
Monday. Nearby jet dynamics and excellent differential advection
between 700 and 500mb will prevail for 12-18 hours between 00Z
Monday and 18Z Monday. The NBM and NBM experimental were used for
the QPF which showed 0.25 to 0.75 of an inch of rain to areas from
Tooele County eastward to Utah County and northeast into the
Uintas. This air mass is cold enough to bring the snow level below
8000 ft from about the southern Wasatch Mountains northward by
Monday morning.

Temperatures are expected to be about 20 degrees or more below
normal across northern Utah and 15-20 degrees below normal over
southwest Utah Monday.

.LONG TERM (after 12Z Tuesday)...
The main trough axis swings through Utah on Tuesday bringing
continued rain/isolated thunderstorm chances and cooler
temperatures.

At the beginning of the long term forecast, the trough axis will be
moving across northern Utah and pushing a stalled cold front
southeast across central Utah and dissipating across south central
Utah by the afternoon. Embedded weak vorticity lobes and short waves
behind the main baroclinic zone, will be the catalyst for kicking
off some rain and isolated thunderstorms, mainly across the
mountains for northern Utah, but seeing precipitation across the SLC
and Cache Valleys is possible during the afternoon. Rain chances
along the weak cold front across south central Utah should tapper
off as the best upper level support remains to the north with the
front eventually dissipating. Temperatures will continue to run
below seasonal normals, but should be a few degrees warmer than high
temperatures experienced on Monday.

As the trough axis moves to the east, zonal flow develops aloft on
Wednesday and some weak, fast moving short waves may have enough
residual moisture available to the initiate some mountain rain and
thunderstorms during the afternoon. Temperatures will again increase
by a few degrees from the previous day and approach seasonal normals
for most locations. Beyond Wednesday, differences in the ensemble
members emerge with the evolution of the upper level patter across
the Great Basin region, but both the GEFS and EPS do agree on
increasing heights across Utah as an area of high pressure takes
hold across the southwest. With increasing heights and warming H7
temperatures being shown in both outputs, the end of the long term
forecast will advertise a period of dry conditions with temperatures
warming each consecutive day into the latter part of the week.

.AVIATION...
Minimal aviation impacts are expected across the SLC terminal, as
VFR conditions will prevail through the valid TAF period. Winds
will be predominately light, southerly flow through the morning
and into the afternoon. There is a 30% chance the winds shift to a
northerly flow with brief gusts up to 15 knots around 00z.

.FIRE WEATHER...
A ridge will build rapidly across the region today with above
normal temperatures and low RH. However, winds will generally be
light with gusts under 20 mph. An usually strong cold trough for
this time of year will move into the northern Great Basin Sunday
resulting in high winds across basically the entire region south
of I-80 from late Sunday morning through Sunday evening over
western valleys and into Monday over south central and eastern
fire zones. Wind gusts could approach 60 mph over portions of the
western valleys, especially in and around the area of Rock Path,
Antelope, and Canal fires. A wind shift to north or northwest will
occur at these fires Sunday night behind the cold front. Winds
will relax within a couple of hours of frontal passage.

There is concern that fire weather zones 482, 484, and 496 (that
are currently in the 'Approaching Critical' status) may need to be
included in the RFW for Sunday. The day shift will consult with
the GACC about that need.

Wetting rains of 0.20 to 0.50 of an inch will develop across
northern Utah Sunday night into Monday. Scattered to isolate
showers are expected to reach as far south as Milford to Cedar
City by Monday morning.

Much cooler temperatures Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures are
expected to be about 20 degrees or more below normal across
northern Utah and 15-20 degrees below normal over southwest Utah
Monday. Southeastern areas will be about 10 degrees below normal.
Temperatures will warm about an additional 4-8 degrees each day
from Tuesday through Thursday along with dry conditions.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for the western two thirds of
Utah and southwest Wyoming.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight

Mostly sunny and warmer today. Increasing clouds tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday

Strong winds and low humidities will bring critical fire weather
conditions Sunday afternoon and evening, mainly to western, southern
and eastern Utah. These conditions will persist across southeast
Utah into Monday ahead of a strong cold front moving through the
area.

A few strong thunderstorms will be possible Sunday afternoon
across northern Utah near the cold front, with gusty winds and
small hail possible.
