Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Springfield MO 624 AM CDT Mon Mar 16 2020 ...Updated for 12Z Aviation Discussion... .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) Issued at 300 AM CDT Mon Mar 16 2020 Lift associated with an upper level speed max and weak isentropic upglide is resulting in an area of showers that are expanding into the area from Kansas and Oklahoma all ahead of a shortwave. This wave and associated lift will keep showers going through most of the morning across the area, with a diminishing trend this afternoon. Despite the rain and clouds today, southerly winds will help boost temperatures into the upper 40s to lower 50s for highs. Things look to quiet down tonight as wave exits to the east. Some lower end chances will reside along the Arkansas border along a diffuse frontal boundary and may see some patchy drizzle further north at times. Temperatures will not fall much with lows only in the 40s. .LONG TERM...(Tuesday through Sunday) Issued at 300 AM CDT Mon Mar 16 2020 For the most part Tuesday looks to be quiet, with some weak upper level ridging building across the region. Although clouds will remain prevalent, persistent southerly flow will result in temperatures climbing back into the upper 50s to lower 60s. Tuesday night through Thursday looks to be a very active period weather-wise. The next in a series of shortwaves arrives Tuesday night spreading more showers into the area. Instability also increases so will likely see thunderstorms as well, which will continue right through the day Wednesday. Main threat here will be the potential for flooding rains given antecedent soil conditions. Will continue the limited flooding risk in the Hazardous Weather Outlook. The main upper level low finally pushes into the Plains late Wednesday night into Thursday. A rather dynamic system will result in additional rainfall that could compound any flooding issues. In addition, this looks to be the most favorable day for strong to possibly severe storms as well. In the wake of the system things quiet down for Friday into the weekend with cooler conditions. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Tuesday morning) Issued at 624 AM CDT Mon Mar 16 2020 Widespread IFR flight conditions are found across southern Missouri along with widespread showers. These showers will taper off this afternoon, but IFR flight conditions will remain through the entire TAF period.
