.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure today. A strong cold front will cross Christmas
Eve, ushering in snow showers, and arctic air for Christmas Day.
High pressure brings moderating temperatures for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 1230 PM Wednesday...

Quiet start to the nearterm with slightly breezy conditions.
chances for rain showers will increase tonight from west to
east out ahead of a cold front approaching from the west. Rain
will overspread the area by Thursday morning and continue
through Thursday afternoon dropping nearly an inch or more of
rain in just over 12 hours which will then taper off as the rain
transitions to snow by late afternoon into the evening. Breezy
conditions will continue through the period and increase to
around 20-25mph with higher gusts in the mountains up to 40mph+
late in the morning. An advisory exists from 7am to 10pm
Thursday for the northeast mountain counties of Pocahontas and
Randolph. No hydro issues are expected, however minor issues of
ponding on roadways and poor drainage areas are possible. A
relatively quick changeover to snow will take place starting on
the western border of the CWA just west of the Ohio River during
the afternoon, however depending on the speed of the cold front
will determine when exactly the entire area transitions to all
snow through frontal passage.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 545 AM Wednesday...

     SNOW CHRISTMAS EVE WITH ARCTIC AIR THROUGH CHRISTMAS DAY...

A large trough over the plains this morning is forecast to dig
through the plains and midwest today, nearly closing off over
the upper midwest this afternoon.

Additional short wave energy coming down the back side of the
large trough then phases as it digs through the Mississippi
Valley tonight into Thursday, and then forms a new cut off low
over Illinois Thursday afternoon. That low is then forecast to
either cross the forecast area Christmas Day, or pass north of
the forecast area, with latest guidance favoring the former.

This scenario generates a surface wave along the associated cold
front over the Tennessee Valley area or even farther south
Thursday morning. Model differences have converged on what had
been the slower, more common solutions.

Anamolous northward surge of moisture ahead of the system into
the forecast area Thursday, beneath an upper level jet to the
tune of 150 kts, spells a soaking one to one and a half inches
rainfall, perhaps close to two inches along the eastern slopes,
where there is a marginal risk for excessive rainfall.

A wind advisory has been issued for the highest ridges Thursday
into Thursday evening, for strong south winds ahead of the
front, and the frontal passage.

The chance for thunder is limited, with low to mid level
stability giving way briefly to a moist adiabat to the surface
just ahead of the front Thursday afternoon. Then, narrow CAPE
and very strong flow through the crystal growth layer can
produce charge separation.

The cold front crosses the area late morning into the evening on
Thursday, slowly at first, and then faster once the surface
wave goes by. Strong cold advection brings a change over to snow
behind the front Thursday afternoon, with it snowing and
blowing Christmas Eve as the wave goes by to the east, the large
upper level system arrives from the west, and saturation
quickly develops through the favored dendritic growth zone.

Accumulating snow is likely, even out across the lowlands, and
road conditions will deteriorate as temperatures fall through
the 20s Thursday night, and into the teens for most of the area
by Christmas morning. The sharpness of the cold advection and
timing of the wave spells the potential for heavy precipitation
at the time of the change over, with the exact juxtaposition of
the wave and the cold air impacting snowfall amounts.

Christmas Day will be the coldest of the season so far, with
arctic air firmly in place beneath the deep upper level low.
The models have converged on this upper low tracking across or
very close to the forecast area Christmas Day, resulting in
deeper saturation starting dendritic growth zone and extending
well into the needle and plates regime, and snow ratios near 20
to 1. Snow flakes should be flying much of the day even if
additional fluffy accumulations are minimal.

Winter Storm Watches have been issued for areas east of the
Ohio River, and winter weather advisories may be needed farther
west, with highlighting continued in the HWO.

Strong winds accompanying the system will produce wind chills in
the single digits below zero in the mountains and single digits
above zero across the lowlands, from early Christmas morning
into Saturday morning. High pressure will build in by dawn
Saturday, with actual low temperatures in the single digits in
the mountains, and 10-15 across the lowlands. Wind Chill
Watches have been issued for the highest ridges.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 545 AM Wednesday...

This is a much more tranquil period, in a progressive pattern,
with the large trough moving right on offshore early in the
weekend, allowing high pressure to bring dry weather, with
moderating temperatures. This may also allow the next system to
approach from the west come the end of the weekend or the
beginning of the next short work week.

High pressure builds into the area Tuesday, the air mass not as
cold as the Christmas blast.

.AVIATION /18Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 1250 PM Wednesday...

Predominate VFR conditions will slowly erode by early Thursday
morning from west to east eventually having MVFR overtake all
terminals by the afternoon. Rain showers will overspread by
Thursday morning affecting all terminals with high end IFR VIS
through the afternoon. CIGs will take a dive by mid afternoon
and a changeover to all snow will commence Thursday evening as
Arctic air is filtered in during frontal passage. Conditions
become worse late afternoon with lower CIGs and ViS associated
with frontal passage and heavier rain showers. The western
terminals may see some relief in the late evening/overnight,
however confidence is not that high as of now.

Steady southerly flow 5-10KT+ will veer out of the west on the tail
end of the period in anticipation of frontal passage on
Thursday. Gusty conditions will pick up now and slowly increase
in intensity through the period until eventually plateauing
late Thursday afternoon. BKW will see the worst of it with 35KT
and LLWS will affect every terminal at flight level 020FT at
45-50KT until the afternoon.
