High pressure through tonight. Strong cold front crosses Christmas
Eve, ushering in snow showers, and arctic air for Christmas
Day. High pressure brings moderating temperatures for the weekend.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH THURSDAY/...
As of 1230 PM Wednesday...

Quiet start to the near term with slightly breezy conditions.
chances for rain showers will increase tonight from west to
east out ahead of a cold front approaching from the west. Rain
will overspread the area by Thursday morning and continue
through Thursday afternoon dropping nearly an inch or more of
rain in just over 12 hours which will then taper off as the rain
transitions to snow by late afternoon into the evening. Breezy
conditions will continue through the period and increase to
around 20-25mph with higher gusts in the mountains up to 40mph+
late in the morning. An advisory exists from 7am to 10pm
Thursday for the northeast mountain counties of Pocahontas and
Randolph. No hydro issues are expected, however minor issues of
ponding on roadways and poor drainage areas are possible. A
relatively quick changeover to snow will take place starting on
the western border of the CWA just west of the Ohio River during
the afternoon, however depending on the speed of the cold front
will determine when exactly the entire area transitions to all
snow through frontal passage.

.SHORT TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY NIGHT/...
As of 155 PM Wednesday...

     SNOW CHRISTMAS EVE WITH ARCTIC AIR THROUGH CHRISTMAS DAY...

Model consensus suggest potent upper trough/low pressure system over
the OH Valley will be pushing an arctic cold front that should be
crossing our area Thursday evening. Abundant low level moisture
ahead of the front will provide numerous heavy rain showers along
with strong gusty winds. One to two inches of rain can be expected
with this feature with a maximum along the eastern slopes of the
Appalachians where WPC has painted the area under a marginal risk
for excessive rainfall. Models show H850 southwest winds 50-60 knots
ahead of the front. This winds will likely be felt over the highest
terrain of our northeast mountains, and along any heavy shower which
can mix these winds down. A wind advisory still in effect for
the higher elevations, expecting around 40 knots these areas
into Thursday evening.

Strong temperature gradient behind the cold front will turn all pcpn
from liquid to snow late Thursday into Friday (Christmas Day).
Plenty of moisture within the dendrite growth zone and upper
level forcing will allow for considerable snow accumulations, 1
to 4 inches across the lowlands, ranging to 4 to 8 across the
eastern mountains, with possibly higher amounts over the
highest peaks. Very cold temperatures behind the front will
likely cause a flash freeze on any water remaining from previous
rainfall, and hard to melt following snowfall. Temperatures
will fall through the 20s Thursday night, and into the teens for
most of the area by Christmas morning. This will deteriorate
road conditions quickly posing a threat for travelers during
Christmas Eve. Therefore, warned all of our counties of
southeast OH and northeast KY and a tier or two of our WV
counties adjacent to the OH River. Will issue a Winter Storm
Warning for the rest of the WV counties as well due to snow
accumulations expected.

Strong winds accompanying the system will produce wind chills
in the single digits below zero in the mountains and single
digits above zero across the lowlands, from early Christmas
morning into Saturday morning. A Wind chill warning has been
issued for the highest ridges of Pocahontas and Randolph
counties in WV.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 155 PM Wednesday...

High pressure will build in by dawn Saturday, with actual low
temperatures in the single digits in the mountains, and 10-15
across the lowlands. Dry weather conditions are expected through
Sunday. The large upper level trough moves right on offshore
early in the weekend, allowing high pressure to bring dry
weather, with moderating temperatures. This may also allow the
next system to approach from the west come the end of the
weekend or the beginning of the next short work week.

High pressure builds into the area Tuesday.

.AVIATION /19Z WEDNESDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 1250 PM Wednesday...

Predominate VFR conditions will slowly erode by early Thursday
morning from west to east eventually having MVFR overtake all
terminals by the afternoon. Rain showers will overspread by
Thursday morning affecting all terminals with high end IFR VIS
through the afternoon. CIGs will take a dive by mid afternoon
and a changeover to all snow will commence Thursday evening as
Arctic air is filtered in during frontal passage. Conditions
become worse late afternoon with lower CIGs and ViS associated
with frontal passage and heavier rain showers. The western
terminals may see some relief in the late evening/overnight,
however confidence is not that high as of now.

Steady southerly flow 5-10KT+ will veer out of the west on the tail
end of the period in anticipation of frontal passage on
Thursday. Gusty conditions will pick up now and slowly increase
in intensity through the period until eventually plateauing
late Thursday afternoon. BKW will see the worst of it with 35KT
and LLWS will affect every terminal at flight level 020FT at
45-50KT until the afternoon.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE: High.

ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Western terminals HTS/CRW/PKB may endure
