LAKESHORE FLOODING CONCERNS AND DANGEROUS SWIMMING CONDITIONS
THURSDAY...
CAA and dry conditions this afternoon lead to sunny skies and deep
mixing today, which caused wind gusts from the west/northwest to
reach 30-45 kts along the Keweenaw Peninsula and on Lake Superior.
Breezy conditions were also seen across the rest of Upper Michigan
today. Highs this afternoon climbed into the 70s across much of the
area due to the above mentioned mixing with lingering 7-10C air
aloft. CAA will weaken as WAA moves into the area due to a
developing low pressure system upstream of the region. This will
weaken wind gusts from west to east this evening with dry conditions
prevailing through midnight. Clear skies and dry conditions this
evening will help cool temperatures quickly after sunset, however as
the above noted WAA returns overnight temperatures are expected to
gradually warm after midnight.
Attention then turns to the deepening system currently undergoing
cyclogenesis in the lee of the Canadian Rockies. Models remain
consistent with this surface low digging across the northern Plains,
then lifting northeast into the Upper Mississippi Valley and across
northern Lake Superior late tonight through Thursday as a vigorous
shortwave trough digs through the region. By 06z the surface low is
progged to move into north-central Minnesota, hugging the
US/Canadian border. Between 06z and 18z on Thursday (early morning
through early afternoon), the shortwave digging across the region
will track east over the Upper Great Lakes and the mid-level wave
will take on a negative tilt with height as warm air advection ahead
of the 850mb low lifts into Ontario. Thus the surface low is progged
to deepen from around 994mb to around 984mb as it tracks just north
of the Lake Superior shoreline. As the low tracks north of Upper
Michigan, a cold front will push west to east across the area
through mid-day. Ahead of this front, south-southwest winds may
occasionally be gusty as a LLJ lifts across the area late tonight
through early/mid-morning. As the front moves across the UP late
tonight through mid to late Thursday morning, showers and perhaps a
few rumbles of thunder remain possible. Convection looks to remain
elevated, but there will be plenty of wind in the column to mix down
and allow for stronger winds. The front is slowest to arrive across
the eastern U.P., thus enhanced south-southwest winds over Lake
Michigan Thursday morning will allow waves to build to 5-8ft in the
Bay of Green Bay and shoreline east of Manistique, thus have issued
a lakeshore flood advisory for those areas.
After the cold front passes and stronger sustained westerly develop
on Thursday, expect stronger gusts to remain frequent. Cold air
advection will begin to work in from the northwest behind the front,
with at least 40-60 knots of low-level shear from 925-800mb
available for mixing. A strong pressure gradient and 3-hr pressure
rises of 5-10mb moving through as the system lifts northeast into
Canada will also act to the further enhance winds. All of that said,
these conditions will favor sustained winds of 20-40 mph accompanied
by winds gusts up to 35-45 mph, with the potential for stronger wind
gusts if mixing can in fact grow deeper. The Keweenaw is expected to
see the strongest winds, mainly between 12-18Z and could see gusts
approaching 50mph at times right along the leading edge of pressure
rises moving through. Have opted to issue a wind advisory for the
Keweenaw Peninsula and lakeshore flood advisory for the western
shoreline of the Keweenaw Peninsula. It is possible we could bump up
against high wind warning criteria over the Keweenaw, this will need
to be monitored. Some lake-effect showers will also develop behind
the cold front and continue to impact the west, while central and
east will start to see cloud cover thin through the afternoon.
Winds begin to relax Thursday evening/night, but expect gusty west-
northwest winds to remain gusty over the Keweenaw. Another shortwave
digging south across the area and cold air advection continuing
overnight Thursday an uptick in lake-effect rain showers is expected
over the northwest wind belts.
.LONG TERM...(Friday through Wednesday)

With upper jet lingering over the Upper Great Lakes late this week
into the weekend, some rogue showers may persist across portions
of Upper Michigan, particularly in the east. Additional moisture
assist should come from Lake Superior under WNW to NW flow. The
next, more widespread precip chances arrive for the latter half of
the weekend, although the models are struggling to resolve the
details of this next disturbance of interest. This will mark a
transition period, with a pattern change underway early next week.
An amplifying trough looks to build across the middle of CONUS,
allowing for much cooler temps to spill southward well into the
U.S. For early next week, this could spell repeated rounds of
precip chances.
As for temps, expect near or slightly below normal temps for the
first half of the long-term period, dropping off next week as said
colder air filters in. The warmest day of the period looks to
occur on Sunday, with the cooler temps prevailing on Tuesday, and
lows responding accordingly.

VFR conditions expected at all terminals through early Thursday
morning. Breezy conditions at all terminals will continue until near
sunset, when mixing of the boundary layer winds ceases. Winds gusts
at KCMX will be strongest, and a few gusts above 35kts cannot be
ruled out this afternoon.
This evening, a fall-like system will approach from the west. The
low pressure is looking to track along the NW lakeshore of Lake
Superior. As it deepens, the south to southwest winds will increase
late this evening. Additionally, a strong low level jet will result
in LLWS in the lowest 2kft upwards of 50 to 60 kts. Additionally,
expect rain showers to move into the region tonight, with showers
starting near 5-6am at KCMX and KIWD, and near 7-8am at KSAW.
A cold front passing through each TAF site will shift winds westerly
between 12-15z, causing windy conditions at the sfc as the rain
showers stop by the mid-morning hours. Wind gusts look to get up to
30-40 kts, with KCMX possibly seeing gusts as higher gusts. Cigs
also look to get low enough to cause MVFR conditions at or below
2kft at KIWD and KCMX behind the cold front Thursday as models hint
at low level clouds causing BKN to OVC conditions at these TAF
sites. KSAW should remain VFR Wednesday, but it could easily get to
MVFR conditions as models hint at the cloud base getting to 2kft.

West winds between 15 and 25 knots will persist this evening, with a
few gale force gusts to 35 knots over the east half. Winds will
briefly subside and become southerly overnight. Attention then turns
to the surface low expected to approach from the west and track just
north of Lake Superior, while deepening from around 994mb to around
984mb. A cold front extending south from the surface low will push
west to east across the lake early morning through mid-day Thursday,
ushering in strong west to west-northwest winds. The main forecast
change has been to increase winds quite a bit given the model
agreement with sustained winds of 35-40 knots and gusts upwards of
50kt along and behind the front. Due to the orientation of the
zones, did opt to upgrade gales to storms from 263-267, even though
the northern edge of 266-267 will be more impacted then areas closer
to the Upper Michigan shoreline. Storms will wind down to lingering
west-northwest gales to 35 knots across a good portion of the lake
into Thursday evening, but will allow the midnight crew to handle
ramp down in case timing changes. High waves of 15 to 20 feet will
accompany these strong winds over Lake Superior over the open
waters. Closer to the shoreline, over the Keweenaw waves will be a
bit less, but still around 15 feet.
Lingering cold air advection and an enhanced pressure gradient will
keep northwest winds between 20 and 30 knots Thursday night through
Friday. High pressure moves in Saturday and winds relax between 10
and 20 knots. The next system looks to move into the region late
this weekend into early next week, with confidence low on the track
track and potential for more gales.
