.NEAR TERM UPDATE /Now Through Wednesday/...A zonal upper level flow
today and tonight will turn more southwesterly on Wednesday as an
upper trough approaches from the west. Other than a few patches of
light fog early this morning, mostly clear skies will continue
through today with only a few thin, high clouds possible. Tonight,
some patchy fog is again possible, especially across western and
northern portions of the forecast area. Moisture levels begin to
increase late tonight into Wednesday as a southerly flow develops
ahead of an approaching upper trough and associated surface cold
front. Dry conditions are expected to continue through early
Wednesday before rain chances begin to increase from the west late
in the afternoon on Wednesday. High temperatures today will be in
the low to mid 60s. Lows tonight are expected to range from the low
to mid 40s inland to low 50s near the coast. On Wednesday high
temperatures will mainly be in the mid and upper 60s. /12

.SHORT TERM /Wednesday night Through Thursday night/...The bulk
of the weather for this package resides in the short term
timeframe. Several shortwaves dive through a mid and upper level
trough as it slides across the central half of the CONUS on
Wednesday night. These shortwaves diving south through the flow
aloft allow the trough to deepen as it pushes east through the day
on Christmas Eve (Thursday). An upper low eventually develops
over the Great Lakes region either late Wednesday night or early
Thursday morning as the trough progresses east. As the trough
slides east, the flow aloft increases substantially with model
guidance showing an area of 120+ knot winds at 200mb and 80-100
knot winds at 500mb sliding into the Deep South early Thursday
morning. The trough continues to deepen as it pivots through the
Deep South on Thursday afternoon with the base of the trough
likely sliding through the local area by Thursday night. The local
area finally gets back into northwest flow aloft on the backside
of the trough by early Christmas morning.

The pattern changes quickly in the lower levels on Wednesday night.
The surface high over the eastern half of the CONUS gets nudged
further into the Western Atlantic on Wednesday night as a surface
low over the Great Lakes region rapidly lifts to the northeast.
Closer to home, southerly low level flow strengthens Wednesday night
into Thursday ahead of the potent cold front likely reaching the
Mississippi River Valley by sunset on Wednesday. Deep southerly flow
and a strengthening low level jet will allow plenty of moisture to
funnel into the region ahead of the front. Forecast soundings show a
plume of 1.3-1.7 inch PWATs spreading into the area late Wednesday
night into early Thursday morning. At this time, it looks like the
front should be approaching our southeast Mississippi counties just
after midnight and moving into the far eastern portion of our CWA
after sunrise on Thursday. PWATs quickly crash to less than a
quarter inch by Thursday afternoon and evening in the wake of the
strong cold front. High pressure builds into the region behind the
front as we head into Christmas Eve night.

Winds will be breezy as we head into Wednesday night as a 40+ knot
low level jet enters the area. Winds will continue to crank across
our local area and the Gulf waters through the overnight hours (see
the Marine discussion below for marine impacts). The bulk of the
rain will push into the area from west to east through the
overnight hours (late Wednesday into early Thursday) ahead of the
strong cold front. Rainfall amounts of 1-1.5 inches are possible
with the highest amounts likely across southeast Mississippi
during the overnight hours and across south central Alabama and
northwest Florida early Thursday morning. A tight pressure
gradient sets up on the backside of this system on Thursday, so
winds will continue to be gusty through the day. Despite
increasing the winds above the blended guidance, still coming out
with winds just shy of Wind Advisory criteria on Thursday
- except right along the coast where sustained winds of 25mph and
gusts over 30mph are possible in the afternoon. The gradient relaxes
somewhat as we head into late Thursday night and early Christmas
morning, but it will remain gusty along the coast during that
timeframe.

The potential for strong to severe storms ahead of the front is
looking slightly more favorable than in the past few forecast
packages. A plume of mid to low 60° dewpoints will advect into
the area through the overnight hours and early on Thursday as the
low level jet increases ahead of the front. Lapse rates and
instability will be the limiting factors, but there will be plenty
of shear. Surface to 6km bulk shear values approach 50 knots
ahead of the front across much of the area. A small corridor of
increasing MUCAPE right along the coast in northwest Florida
appears in some of the model guidance ahead of the front in the
pre-dawn hours on Thursday with slightly curved hodographs.
Despite a marginal risk being drawn across the entire area (via
SPC), really thinking that the best chances for severe storms
resides east of I-65 in the early morning hours on Thursday
(especially across the northwest Florida). The main impacts from
any strong to severe storms will be damaging wind gusts; however,
a few brief tornadoes cannot be ruled out across northwest Florida
in the pre-dawn hours on Thursday.

The temperatures during the short term represent the downhill
portion of a roller coaster. Bumped up the overnight temperatures
on Wednesday night as we continue to advect moisture into the
region ahead of the front and the blended guidance was too low
across much of the area. Expect temperatures to hover in the 60s
through much of the overnight hours across the southern half of
the area until the frontal passage on Thursday morning.
Temperatures will crash in the wake of the front with temperatures
hovering in the 40s for much of the area on Thursday afternoon.
These chilly temperatures coupled with the gusty winds during the
afternoon will yield wind chills in the 30s across parts of
southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama. The downward
temperature trend continues on Christmas Eve with temperatures
bottoming out in the 20s nearly everywhere by Christmas morning
(temperatures should fall right to freezing mark at the beaches).
Many inland locations will fall to freezing by 9pm on Christmas
Eve will spend a good 10-11 hours below freezing. Given that winds
will stay somewhat elevated through the overnight hours, expect
wind chill to tank into the *teens* north of the I-10 corridor in
the pre-dawn hours on Christmas morning. At this point, we should
stay just above Hard Freeze Warning and Wind Chill Advisory
criteria late Christmas Eve into Christmas morning.

Increasing onshore flow will lead to the rip current risk increasing
to a MODERATE through the short term period. 07/mb

.EXTENDED TERM /Friday Through Monday/...The Extended starts with a
closed upper system east of the Mississippi River, an upper level
shortwave trough over the Desert Southwest, and an upper ridge
stretching north over the US Rockies into Canada. Surface high
pressure has moved over the Texas coast, with the Southeast under
cool northwesterly flow. Friday into the Saturday, the eastern Conus
system moves off as the Desert Southwest moves east over the
Southern Plains before moving over the Gulf of Mexico by Saturday
night. The Southern Plains surface high moves to the East Coast by
Saturday night, with onshore flow returning to the Southeast by
Sunday morning. A second upper level shortwave trough moves over the
Mississippi River Saturday night into Monday, with a corresponding
cold front moving across the forecast area Sunday night into Monday.
With relatively modest moisture return ahead of the front, rain
chances will be limited Sunday night. Temperatures rise to near
seasonal norms for Sunday into Sunday night, but remain below to
well below for the majority of the Extended.

.MARINE...A light to occasional moderate offshore flow will continue
through this afternoon, shifting more east to southeast and
gradually increasing tonight. A strengthening onshore flow then
continues through Wednesday ahead of an approaching cold front. This
cold front will be much stronger than previous frontal passages as
it moves quickly east across the marine area area late Wednesday
night through Thursday morning. The increasing strong onshore flow
advance of the front will shift to a very strong offshore flow in
the wake of the front by early Thursday morning. Winds and seas will
likely increase to Exercise Caution criteria by late Wednesday
afternoon and then small Craft Advisory levels by Wednesday evening.
Due to the relatively high confidence in a very strong wind event
over the coastal waters area in association with this FROPA, we have
gone ahead and issued a Small Craft Advisory for all of the marine
area, beginning Wednesday evening (03Z Thursday) and continuing
through Noon (18z) Friday. Gale Warnings may be required on Thursday
and Thursday night. /12
