.UPDATE and INITIAL NEAR TERM...Clouds and persistent fog this
morning across the forecast area have been slower to break up than
originally anticipated, mainly along and north of Highway 84.
Have bumped temperatures down over the northern half of the
forecast area along and north of Highway 84, with these areas
seeing less daytime heating. Have bumped temperatures upward south
of Highway 84 due to better heating this morning, especially over
the Florida panhandle. Everything else is on track at this time.

Looking at tonight into Thursday, an upper level ridge will build
north over the Southeast from high pressure centered over the
Gulf of Mexico. A surface ridge centered over the Gulf of Mexico
shifts north in response, bringing a more organized southerly
flow to the area. With a very moist airmass in place over the
region and winds becoming a light southerly tonight, guidance is
consistent in bringing fog back to the area. Helping with fog
development is the southerly flow over cooler waters in area
coastal bays and near shore waters. A dense fog advisory will
likely be issued this afternoon. Temperatures will remain at well
above seasonal norms tonight due to upper level subsidence front
an upper ridge building north over the region and the warm moist
airmass in place over the region.

Late tonight though Thursday, a stalled cold front currently
located well north of the forecast area will begin to shift south
as an upper trough digs south over the northeastern Conus. With
the front weakening as it moves south across the forecast area
beginning early Thursday, any chance of rain will be limited.
An isolated to a small chance of rain is possible. Persistent
cloud cover ahead of the front's passage and overnight fog
development will help to limit any daytime heating ahead of the
front's passage. Instability and chance of thunderstorms mixing in
will thus be limited, so have left out any mention of rumbles for
Thursday. With the weak nature of the front and a warm moist
airmass in place over the region, another day of above seasonal
temperatures is expected.

18Z issuance...Persistent IFR/LIFR CIGS and VISBYs are expected to
become mostly low end MVFR as dense fog this morning continues to
mix out and breaks in the cloud cover bring mixing to the area.
Some local IFR conditions are expected to persist this afternoon
into this evening, mainly along and north of Highway 84. South
winds around 5 knots are expected this afternoon into tonight.

Winds will become a light southerly tonight, with IFR/LIFR
conditions returning to most of the forecast area by 06-08Z, These
conditions will begin to mix out around sunrise, with low end MVFR
to local VFR conditions returning by noontime Thursday. A weak
cold front will cross the forecast area beginning early Thursday
morning, helping to mix out the lower conditions mainly to the
northern half of the forecast area.

12Z issuance...Fog has been slower to develop tonight. However,
dense fog is expected to redevelop into daybreak and through mid-
morning today. In fact, observations have begun to show a drop in
VIS (as well as CIGs) in the last hour, with PNS reporting VIS at
1/4 mile and CIG at 200 feet. Much of the fog inland is expected
to dissipate by early afternoon, but areas near the coast and
especially over the marine areas will continue to see reduced VIS
and CIGs due to dense fog. Expecting the TAF sites to return to
VFR by late this afternoon, but conditions are expected to
deteriorate once again tonight. Winds will be light and variable
this morning. By this afternoon, winds will pick up slightly to be
around 5 knots and from the southwest. Light and variable winds
will then return tonight. /26

PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 447 AM CST Wed Jan 15 2020/

NEAR TERM /Now Through Wednesday night/...Surface high pressure
will maintain its hold aloft over the Gulf of Mexico, with generally
zonal flow over the northern Gulf coast. The warm front that brought
rain and some thunderstorm activity to our northern counties and
areas north has since shifted further northward. Current surface
analysis shows the boundary over Tennessee and Arkansas. PWATs over
our area range from 1.3 to 1.4 inches through this afternoon.
Overall, not expecting too much in the way of shower activity for
our area today; however, with light southerly flow and dew points in
the upper 60s today, some scattered to isolated light showers are
possible this afternoon. A weakening cold front will then approach
the northern Gulf coast late this evening, bringing some light rain
chances to our northern counties through tonight.

With cooler air in place due to the passage of an outflow boundary
earlier yesterday, fog has been fairly scarce tonight. In fact,
have not seen many, if any, observations of dense fog so far
tonight. Hi-Res model guidance suggests that dense fog will
redevelop over the inland areas closer to the coast around
daybreak and into mid- morning before dissipating by early
afternoon. At this time, have maintained the Dense Fog Advisory
through 9AM this morning. However, this will continue to be
monitored. Model probabilities as well as Hi-Res model guidance
indicate the potential for fog again tonight into tomorrow
morning.

The high temperature at Mobile yesterday reached 78 degrees and
Pensacola reached 76. These values are well above normal for this
time of year by about 17 and 16 degrees, respectively. In fact,
Mobile was just 2 degrees away from breaking the maximum
temperature record for January 14th. Expecting similar trends for
highs today, with temperatures area-wide in the upper 70s. Lows
tonight into tomorrow morning are then expected to be in the lower
60s.

Lastly, the HIGH risk for rip currents was extended through today to
account for high southeasterly swell of 3 feet at 7 seconds. Models
suggest the swell will subside to 2 feet at 7 seconds tonight;
therefore, a moderate risk of rip currents will follow for tonight.

SHORT TERM /Thursday Through Friday night/...An upper trof over
the interior eastern states moves off into the western Atlantic
through Thursday night followed by a highly amplified upper ridge
which advances from the central states into the eastern states
through Friday. A surface low will be located Thursday morning over
New England with a trailing cold front which extends southward
into the extreme northeastern Gulf. Despite the front being
located south of the land portion of the forecast area Thursday
morning, drier air flowing into the region will be sufficiently
delayed to have still allowed for areas of fog to develop over the
southern portion of the area overnight which then dissipates by
mid Thursday morning. As the surface low moves well off into the
western Atlantic through Thursday night, a large and rather
strong surface high builds from the Plains into the eastern
states. Will have slight chance to chance pops on Thursday due to
layer lifting in the wake of the front seen in the 295-305K layer,
then dry conditions follow for Thursday night. Another upper trof
advances across the central states Friday into Friday night with
an associated surface low developing lee of the Rockies over the
central Plains and tracks towards the Great Lakes. The large
surface high over the eastern states shifts mainly into the
western Atlantic through Friday night which allows for a return
flow to develop over the forecast area while the surface low
brings a strong cold front to near the mid Mississippi River
valley. Mainly dry conditions are expected on Friday except for
potential isolated showers over the extreme southwestern portion
of the area due to isentropic lift. Pops increase Friday night as
isentropic lift increases ahead of the front and will have good
chance to likely pops over the westernmost portion of the area
tapering to slight chance over the easternmost portion. Highs on
Thursday range from the mid to upper 60s well inland to 70 to 75
elsewhere. Highs on Friday will be mostly in the mid 60s. Lows
Thursday night range from the mid to upper 40s well inland to the
lower 50s elsewhere. Lows Friday night range from the lower 50s
well inland to near 60 at the immediate coast. A moderate risk of
rip currents is expected by Friday. /29

LONG TERM /Saturday Through Tuesday/...The upper trof over the
central states continues across the interior eastern states
and brings a strong cold front through the forecast area late
Saturday afternoon into Saturday evening. Will have likely pops
over the entire area on Saturday with mainly chance pops Saturday
evening. Dry conditions follow for the remainder of the period as
a large upper trof evolves over the eastern states, setting up a
deep layer and persistent dry northerly flow over the forecast
area. /29

MARINE...Widespread dense fog is expected to redevelop early this
morning, mainly over the near shore waters of Alabama and Northwest
Florida out to 20 nautical miles, including all inland bays and
sounds. Dense fog will likely persist through tonight and into
tomorrow morning as well. Thus, the Dense Fog Advisory remains in
effect through 6AM Thursday for these locations. A light southerly
wind flow will also develop early this morning and persist through
tonight ahead of a weakening cold front approaching from the north.
Passage of this cold front early Thursday will lead to a moderate to
occasionally strong northeast flow through Thursday night. A
moderate to strong east to southeast flow will then develop late in
the week ahead of a stronger cold front approaching from the
northwest. /26
