Update...
South to southwesterly winds ahead of an approaching cold front
will allow for another above normal day across South Florida.
Temperatures will soar into the low to mid 80s with highest temps
along the east coast.

A cold front currently moving into the Tampa Bay area and over the
eastern Gulf will continue to move towards South Florida today.
The front will arrive this afternoon through the evening. As the
front arrive an increase in showers and the potential for a
thunderstorm or two, as most of the upper level dynamical support
will remain north of the region. As the front works its way across
the peninsula it will continue to weaken and meso-models break the
straight line up as it reaches the east coast. This will lead to
mainly scattered showers along the east coast. The front will push
offshore later this evening. No major changes to the forecast as
the front is progressing as forecasted.

Once the front pushes offshore the winds become northwest and
breezy overnight. Cold air advection will begin to take place late
tonight/ early Sunday morning. This will allow for low
temperatures on tonight into Sunday morning to drop into the mid
40s across the northwestern interior sections to the upper 50s
along the east coast.

HAZARDOUS MARINE CONDITIONS THROUGH SUNDAY...

Short Term...(Today through Sunday night)

Early this morning, a surface cold front is analyzed from
southeast Georgia extending southwestward over the Florida Big
Bend and into the northeastern Gulf waters. The parallel
orientation to midlevel winds relative to this boundary, and
lagging nature of its corresponding upper trough, suggest that
this boundary continues to experience an overall slow forward
motion. Numerical model guidance suggests that this boundary
enters the forecast area from the northwest around 21Z before
clearing most of the NWS Miami County Warning area by 06Z Sunday.

Ahead of the cold front, ample low-level moisture is in place
across South Florida -- characterized by lower 70s dewpoints.
This moisture, combined with sufficient decoupling amid clearing
skies, could support patchy fog through the early morning hours
today. The greatest potential for fog will be across western
parts of interior South Florida westward to the Gulf Coast. Any
fog is expected to have dissipated by mid-morning.

Also ahead of the cold front, substantial low-level thickness
values -- i.e., around 1400-1405 geopotential meters in the
1000-850-mb layer -- exist along the western flank of warm-
advection-enhanced midlevel ridging. This suggests warm
conditions materializing today, with above-normal high
temperatures expected -- i.e., in the lower and middle 80s. There
is some possibility that highs today could reach near record
values.

A band of showers, and perhaps a couple of thunderstorms, is
forecast to enter northwestern areas along the front later in the
afternoon, with this activity subsequently spreading eastward and
southeastward into the evening. Convective coverage along the
boundary should become increasingly sparse with time, owing to
decreasing frontal convergence -- related to veering pre-frontal
surface winds and the frontolytic character of this boundary. With
midlevel-trough-attendant ascent and stronger deep shear
relegated to the cooler side of the frontal zone, the overall
convective risk associated with the passage of this boundary is
expected to be minimal. Moreover, weak midlevel lapse rates should
mute parcel accelerations in updrafts, despite the rich boundary-
layer moisture. However, convective momentum transport -- aided
by cold-pool amalgamation within weakly-organized multicell
clusters -- could yield one or two strong wind gusts owing to
30-40 kt of background 850-700-mb flow and steep low-level lapse
rates ahead of the cold front. The greatest potential for such
activity would be from the Naples area toward the Lake Okeechobee
region and locations farther north and west. By the time the
boundary reaches the east coast metro areas this evening,
thunderstorms should become unlikely.

In the wake of the cold front, considerably cooler and drier air
is forecast to overspread South Florida. The influx of continental
air will be reinforced by larger-scale surface cyclogenesis off
the Mid-Atlantic coast, with temperatures tonight expected to fall
into the middle/upper 40s across the Lake Okeechobee region and
vicinity to the lower/middle 50s elsewhere. Persistent cold
advection into Sunday will greatly suppress diurnal surface
heating, with high temperatures only expected to reach the middle
and upper 60s. Moreover, the strong cold advection over the
notably warmer western Atlantic waters will establish ocean-
overlying low static stability. This could facilitate widespread
cold-advection stratocumulus clouds that may potentially be
advected toward the east coast through the day, especially if
winds gradually veer. This could result in Sunday high
temperatures being even cooler than presently forecast. Also, an
elevated fire-weather risk may also materialize on Sunday, as
addressed below.

For Sunday night, optimal nocturnal radiational cooling amid the
dry air mass and mostly clear skies will allow temperatures to
fall into the 40s across much of interior South Florida westward
to the Gulf Coast, with lower/middle 50s for overnight lows across
the east coast metro areas. A few isolated locations across
western parts of the Lake Okeechobee region could experience
Sunday night overnight low temperatures in the upper 30s.

Long Term...(Monday through Friday)

For early to middle parts of the upcoming week, the air mass will
gradually moderate over South Florida. Post-frontal surface
ridging is expected to elongate eastward to the north of the area,
and potentially become reinforced by middle to latter parts of
the week as a weaker cold front moves southward. This pattern will
allow temperatures to gradually climb to near-normal readings
through the week, with a slight interruption to the warming trend
resulting from possible mid-week frontal passage. Slight chances
for showers will return by middle to latter parts of the week,
after winds in the wake of the stronger weekend front veer to
easterly -- allowing for a gradual influx of ocean-modified,
more-moist air to occur and potentially phase with the weaker mid-
week front. Hazardous weather is unlikely for the upcoming week.

Marine...

Hazardous marine conditions are expected this weekend. A Small
Craft Advisory is in effect for the waters beyond 20 NM from the
Palm Beach County coast for pre-frontal south to southwest winds
around 20 knots and higher gusts today.

Then for this evening, the strong low-level pressure gradient
following frontal passage, and a deepening well-mixed layer
resulting from considerably cooler air overspreading the warmer
waters, warrant headlines for all South Florida waters as winds
and seas increase. Small Craft Advisories are in effect for the
Gulf waters and Lake Okeechobee starting this evening, and for
Biscayne Bay starting overnight tonight -- continuing into Sunday.
For the Atlantic waters, there is increasing concern that ample
momentum transport within the mixed layer could support frequent
gale-force gusts -- especially for waters beyond 10 NM from shore.
Forecast soundings indicate 30-34 kt of mean 0-1-km flow tonight
into early Sunday in proximity to the Gulf Stream. This average
flow, combined with enhanced turbulence above the warmer waters,
offers growing concern in the potential for frequent gale-force
wind gusts. As a result, the Small Craft Advisory previously in
effect for the South Florida Atlantic waters has been replaced by
a Gale Watch -- indicating the expectation for Small-Craft-
Advisory winds and the possibility for frequent gale-force gusts.
Substantial increases in wave heights are expected tonight into
Sunday for all South Florida waters -- with seas over the Gulf
Stream expected to build to 8-10 feet and potentially higher.

By Sunday night into Monday, winds and seas are expected to be
subsiding as the pressure gradient weakens. However, lingering
swell over the Atlantic waters -- from the north -- may still
prolong heightened seas into early parts of the upcoming week.
Winds and seas may once again build during middle and latter parts
of the upcoming week, as surface ridging becomes enhanced north
of the area in the wake of a weaker cold front.

Showers and a few thunderstorms, some with locally gusty winds,
may accompany the cold frontal passage today into this evening.
Activity should be decreasing in coverage by this evening into
tonight. And then isolated to widely scattered showers could
return to the South Florida waters by middle/latter parts of the
upcoming week.

Beach Forecast...

For the Gulf beaches, strengthening onshore flow today is
expected to increase the rip-current risk, with this risk further
increasing tonight into Sunday as increasing westerly swell
potentially affects the area. As a result, a High Rip Current Risk
has been issued for the Collier County beaches through Sunday.

For the Atlantic beaches, the combination of modest onshore flow
and lingering established rip-current channels will result in a
Moderate Rip Current Risk for today. Then increasing north-
northeasterly swell on Sunday could support an additional
increase in the rip-current potential for Sunday.

Fire Weather...

In the wake of the strong cold front this weekend, winds will
shift to the northwest and then north and become gusty for
tonight into Sunday morning. As much drier air overspreads the
region behind the front, and combines with lingering enhanced
winds, elevated fire-weather conditions are expected to
materialize on Sunday. The greatest fire-weather potential on
Sunday is expected to affect western parts of South Florida.
However, the tendency for winds to weaken through the diurnal
heating cycle on Sunday, combined with areas of above-normal
precipitation during the past couple of weeks, may mitigate the
overall fire-weather risk to some extent.

* At 258 PM EST, National Weather Service meteorologists were
  tracking gusty showers along a line extending from near Moore Haven
  to near Bonita Springs to 23 miles southwest of Cape Romano.
  Movement was east at 25 mph.

* Winds in excess of 45 mph and funnel clouds possible with these
  showers.
