Area forecast discussion, Dec 17, 10:55 AM PST, 3 hours 22 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1055 AM PST Thu Dec 17 2020

.SYNOPSIS...17/739 AM.

A cold front will drop south across the region today and bring
much cooler temperatures across the area and a chance of light
rain for the northern areas. A tightening pressure difference
across the area will develop breezy to windy conditions across
much of the area. A warming trend is expected through the weekend
as high pressure builds over the region.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-SAT)...17/850 AM.

An upper level trof moved into the area early this morning, with a
weakening surface cold front over SLO/SBA Counties. This system has
brought up to 0.12 inch of pcpn to NW SLO County. Some more light
rain is possible over portions of SLO County mainly this morning,
with a slight chance to chance of rain over portions of SBA
County. The chances of pcpn will become more focused on the N mtn
slopes of SBA/VTU/L.A. Counties later today into tonight, with
snow possible down to around 4500 to 5000 feet by tonight. Any
additional rain will be on the light side and generally less than
0.10 inch, with little in the way of any snow accumulation
expected in the mtns.

Gusty NW to N winds were affecting the SBA County S coast and mtns
this morning with some gusts up to 46 mph noted at the Refugio RAWS.
These winds will continue into early this evening then turn more N
to NE overnight. There will also be increasing W to NW winds along
much of the coast this afternoon into this evening, as well as the
L.A./VTU County mtns and Antelope Vly, where wind gusts to 35 to 45
mph can be expected. As a result, Wind Advisories are in affect for
many of these areas. Gusty sub-Advisory level W-NW winds will
likely affect many of the vlys this afternoon as well.

Otherwise, mostly cloudy skies in many areas this morning will
become partly cloudy this afternoon, except remain mostly cloudy
on the N slopes. Temps across the region today will be several
degrees below normal, with the warmest coast and vlys only
reaching the upper 50s to mid 60s, except mid to upper 60s along
the portions of the SBA County S coast.

The upper level trof axis will move E of the region by this evening,
with slowly rising heights tonight in a broad NW flow aloft. Upper
level ridging is then expected to move into the forecast area Fri
thru Sat, with H5 heights increasing to 574-575 dm Fri, and to
around 577-579 dm on Sat.

Offshore gradients to the N and E will increase tonight and Fri,
then increase further Fri night into Sat, especially to the E.
Pressure gradients from LAX-DAG are forecast by the NAM to drop to
around -4.1 mb by 12Z Fri, and to around -5.5 mb by 12Z Sat. To the
N, the LAX-BFL gradients are forecast to fall to -4.3 mb by 12Z
Fri then remain the same for 12Z Sat. Even afternoon gradients
remain significantly offshore each day. This will set up an
extended period of gusty N to NE winds across the forecast tonight
through at least Sat. Gusty N winds will prevail tonight for the
wind-prone areas, then switch to NE by early Fri and continue into
Sat, strongest night and morning hours. Advisory-level winds
possible at times over portions of the VTU/L.A. County mtns, vlys
and perhaps even some coastal areas late tonight into the first
part of the weekend.

The offshore flow will bring in a much drier air mass with mostly
clear skies expected in all areas Fri thru Sat. There will also be
fire weather concerns by Sat with gusty winds and daytime humidities
falling into the teens over a large area. A warming trend will take
place with temps near to slightly above normal Fri, and several
degrees above normal for many areas on Sat. Highs in the warmest
vlys and coastal areas should reach the mid 60s to around 70 on
Fri, and upper 60s to lower 70s Sat.

.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...17/254 AM.

Ridging aloft will continue build in over the area on Sunday. 500
mb heights peak out somewhere between 580 and 583 decameters, and
Sunday should be the warmest day of the week. With a majority of
the GFS and ECMWF ensemble members point toward a warmer day on
Sunday, the forecast was warmed over NBM values.

Model solutions are still at odds for the middle portion of next
week. Some ensemble perturbations have rainfall forecast for the
area, but the vast majority of the solutions of the GEFS and ECMWF
are dry. For now, cooler temperatures and dry conditions seems to
be the best forecast.
