What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Los Angeles, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Dec 17, 2:59 AM PST, 26 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Dec 17, 2:59 AM PST, 26 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
259 AM PST Thu Dec 17 2020

.SYNOPSIS...17/214 AM.

A cold front will drop south across the region today and bring
much cooler temperatures and a chance of light rain for the
northern areas. A tightening pressure difference across the area
will develop breezy to windy conditions across the coastal
sections and interior portions of the area. A warming trend is
expected through the weekend as high pressure builds overs the
region.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-SAT)...17/254 AM.

The latest satellite imagery shows a cold front over the San
Francisco Bay area and stretching out to the southwest. Light rain
can be seen pushing into Monterey County on the latest radar
mosaic. This frontal boundary will drop south over the Central
Coast of California and bring rain chances to mainly areas north
of Point Conception. As the front moves south, it will fall apart,
completely shearing apart at Point Conception. As a result, the
highest chance of rain and highest rainfall amounts is forecast
for northwestern San Luis Obispo County. Precipitation amounts
with the system will likely be a tenth of an inch or less, except
amount around a quarter of an inch across northwestern San Luis
Obispo County. Precipitation will also affect the northern slopes
of the mountains and the Interstate 5 Corridor. With snow levels
remaining above 5000 feet through late tonight, no accumulating
snowfall is expected for the Grapevine area. A rain/snow mix could
occur for a period, if the right ingredient come together.
Snowfall amounts should range around an inch or less above 6000
feet.

For areas south of Point Conception, the main story will end up
being cooler and cloudier conditions along with gusty winds. A
tightening surface pressure gradient across the area will develop
gusty west to northwest winds later today, turning more northerly
tonight. Wind advisories will be added to the forecast for
southern Santa Barbara County, the Central Coast, the Ventura
County coast, the Interstate 5 Corridor, and the Antelope Valley.

The northerly surface pressure gradient will linger into Thursday,
and likely through the weekend. Gusty north to northeast winds
will likely linger into Friday night and Saturday and an
additional round of advisories will be needed across portions of
the South Coast of California and maybe the Central Coast for
gusty Santa Lucia winds.

The trough axis exits the area on early Friday morning and ridging
aloft will start to build in from the west. A warming trend will
develop for Friday and Saturday as 500 mb heights climb and
1000-500 mb thickness values increase.

.LONG TERM (SUN-WED)...17/254 AM.

Ridging aloft will continue build in over the area on Sunday. 500
mb heights peak out somewhere between 580 and 583 decameters, and
Sunday should be the warmest day of the week. With a majority of
the GFS and ECMWF ensemble members point toward a warmer day on
Sunday, the forecast was warmed over NBM values.

Model solutions are still at odds for the middle portion of next
week. Some ensemble perturbations have rainfall forecast for the
area, but the vast majority of the solutions of the GEFS and ECMWF
are dry. For now, cooler temperatures and dry conditions seems to
be the best forecast.

.BEACHES...17/136 AM.

A large, long-period west to northwest swell will continue to
impact the coastal areas through this morning and into the
afternoon across the Southern California Bight with the highest
surf affecting the Central Coast and the exposed west facing
beaches of the Ventura County Coast.

The High Surf Advisory for the Central Coast will only be in
effect now through noon today. Surf has started to diminish some
with surf expected to be between 8 and 12 feet through this
morning. Surf will then lower to below feet allowing for the High
Surf Advisory to expire. There will continue to be a high rip
current risk.

The High Surf Advisory for the Ventura Coast has also been
downgraded to a Beach Hazards Statement with elevated surf between
4 and 7 feet. This should continue through this afternoon across
the Ventura Coast with continued high rip current risk. Surf
across the Los Angeles beaches and southern Santa Barbara South
Coast have lowered as well to between 2 and 4 feet with local sets
to 5 feet this morning, therefore the Beach Hazards Statement was
cancelled. There will be a moderate risk of rip currents through
today.
