What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Los Angeles, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Dec 2, 9:21 AM PST, 26 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Dec 2, 9:21 AM PST, 26 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
921 AM PST Wed Dec 2 2020

.SYNOPSIS...01/852 PM.

A very dry offshore flow pattern will persist over the region
into next week and keep mild days in place with cool overnight
lows in wind sheltered areas. Gusty northeasterly winds are
expected for the rest of the week, possibly damaging at times in
the mountains and foothills Thursday. Lighter offshore winds
expected over the weekend into early next week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-FRI)...02/918 AM.

A little offshore burst this morning is generating some very
isolated advisory level winds, mainly just the Porter Ranch area
and western Santa Monica Mountains where gusts to around 40 mph
have occurred. Otherwise, main change in the forecast is that
the models now are in good agreement showing a significant
decrease in winds Thursday night into Friday to levels that we are
currently seeing across the area this morning. So even advisories
might be hard to justify except for isolated spots. So the High
Wind Watch will be converted to a warning for the mountains and
(though marginal) the SC Valley, but only through Thursday
afternoon. Other valleys and coast will stay in the advisory
range.

***From Previous Discussion***

A strong and cold upper low will spin through the great plains
tonight it will bend the upper lever flow over Srn CA to the NE
brining one ingredient for a major Santa Ana event to the area. A
grip of cold air will advect in to the state in the NE flow
(although the amount of cold air advection is less than it was
forecast at this time). This is the second ingredient for a major
Santa Ana event. Lastly a cold dome of sfc high pressure will
build into the great basin which will produce an offshore grad
between 8 and 9 mb from the east. This strong sfc push is the 3rd
and final ingredient for a major Santa Ana. Only 1 to 2 MB of
offshore flow from the north so this Santa Ana will be a little
more east focused.

All that said it must be noted that all three wind parameters are
trending weaker in this morning's forecast compared to 24 hours
ago. If this trend continues the event may not produce warning
level wind gusts. Will leave the high wind watch in place for now
and see what the 12Z runs produce.

Still expect a very windy day Thursday with gusts to at least 55
mph across the same wind corridor from Central LA county to SW
VTA county. Since this event will be more easterly than
northeasterly it is possible that Avalon will be affected by
strong winds as well.

Despite the adiabatic compressional warming there will be cooling
everywhere due to the large amount of cool air moving in from the
east. The interior will cool 4 to 7 degrees while the coasts and
vlys will see 3 to 5 degrees of cooling.

It will be very dry and the low humidities and very strong winds
will produce very dangerous fire weather conditions please see the
products LAXFWFLOX, LAXRFWLOX and the Fire Weather forecast
discussion below for full details.

The latest mdls are really backing off on the offshore flow and
upper support for the winds for Friday. If these conditions come
true there will likely be no advisory level gusts. Not going to
buy all the way into this new forecast just yet but did reduce the
winds in all areas. There will be no cool air advection and this
along with the continued offshore flow will bring 2 to 5 degrees
of warming to the area.

.LONG TERM (SAT-TUE)...02/314 AM.

Pretty good confidence in the forecast for Sat and Sun. The GFS
and the EC are not in the best of agreement but the differences
should not affect the weekend forecast that much. Both days will
be mostly clear with about 3 MB of offshore flow from both the N
and the E. There will be slight warming each day and by Sunday max
temps across the coasts and vlys will be in the 70s which is 4 to
8 degrees above normals.

Not much confidence in the forecast for next week at all. Both the
EC and GFS forecast that a small piece of energy is going to
split off form the main jet over the Pac NW and then move into NV.
From there both mdls suggest that it will grow into large cut off
low which will retrograde somewhere over CA. Both mdls now some
kind of light rain in the So Cal forecast for late next week. The
ensembles are all over the place as well and really think that all
of the solutions are wrong. For the moment will just keep a
generic dry offshore flow pattern going for Monday and Tuesday
forecast with continued above normal temps. It will be interesting
to see how the mdls handle this time period in the upcoming 12Z
and 00Z runs.

.MARINE...02/130 AM.

Outer Waters... Winds and seas will remain below Small Craft
Advisory(SCA) levels through early Thursday morning. By mid-
morning Thursday there is a 60% chance that hazardous seas for
swells reaching 10 feet is likely initially across the northern
portions before spreading to NW of San Nicolas Island by late
Thursday morning or early afternoon. Therefore, have issued a SCA
for hazardous seas for the large swells expected to reach 10-11
feet through Friday afternoon. Otherwise, seas should lower to
below SCA thresholds through early next week.

Inner Waters north of Point Sal...Similar conditions are expected
in respect to an increasing NW to W swell Thursday morning and
continue through Friday afternoon. Winds are not expected to
reach SCA thresholds, however due to the hazardous seas, will be
issuing a SCA for the same time period as the outer waters. Peak
swell should reach 10 feet. The combination of a long periods
swell, could cause some higher steep waves near shore.

Inner Waters S of Point Conception...For the waters near shore
from Point Mugu to Santa Monica, moderate to high confidence in
SCA level NE winds this morning. A SCA will go into effect early
this morning through noon today. The rest of the inner waters
inside the Southern California Bight will likely remain below SCA
level through this evening. From late Wednesday night through
Friday, there is a 70% chance of SCA level NE winds, a bit
stronger from Ventura to Santa Monica likely extending out to
Santa Cruz Island, as well as portions of the San Pedro Channel to
Catalina. There is a chance that gusty NE winds may impact east-
facing harbors such as Avalon Harbor and Two Harbors on Catalina
Island.

.BEACHES...02/248 AM.

A storm across the Northern and Central Pacific earlier this week
has produced a large swell that will affect the Central Coast by
Thursday morning through Friday evening. The combination of the
northwest swell of around 8-10 feet with a long period between
17-20 seconds will bring high surf 10 to 14 feet to the Central
Coast starting early Thursday morning and continue through Friday
evening. There could be local sets to 17 feet at times for NW to W
facing beaches. A High Surf Advisory was issued last evening
valid from early Thursday morning through Friday evening.

Some of the swell energy is likely to refract across portions of
the Santa Barbara Channel and should bring some elevated surf up
between 4-6 feet across exposed west facing beaches from Santa
Barbara to L.A. County by Friday.

There is an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents can
pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can
cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small
boats near shore.

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (FRI-TUE).

Periods of offshore winds and dry conditions could lead to
brief critical fire weather conditions into the weekend. High
surf or strong rip currents will create hazardous ocean conditions
at most beaches into at least Friday, and possibly Saturday. Near
freezing conditions over coastal Santa Barbara and San Luis
Obispo Counties may damage sensitive plants and crops this
weekend.
