What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this wind advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Los Angeles, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this wind advisory went out at Dec 1, 3:56 PM PST, 4 hours 52 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Dec 1, 3:56 PM PST, 4 hours 52 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
356 PM PST Tue Dec 1 2020

.SYNOPSIS...01/144 PM.

A very dry offshore flow pattern will persist over the region
into next week and keep mild days in place with cool overnight
lows in wind sheltered areas. Gusty northeasterly the rest of the
week, possibly damaging at times in the mountains Thursday.
Lighter offshore winds expected over the weekend into early next
week.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-FRI)...01/117 PM.

Offshore flow expected to continue well into the weekend and
likely at least until the middle of next week. That means very low
humidities, periods of very gusty northeast winds, chilly
overnight temps, and no rain.

Winds expected to remain generally below advisory levels for
another 24-36 hours with the exception of our usual favorite
locations like the Santa Susanna mtns in Ventura/LA Counties
(which includes Porter Ranch and Wiley Ridge), the mtn ranges
surrounding the Santa Clarita Valley, and possibly the Santa
Lucias in coastal SLO County. Humidities will remain very low
though and daytime temps will be mild with highs at lower
elevations mostly in the 70s.

A stronger Santa Ana event is still expected late Wednesday night
into Thursday, though there remains a little uncertainty on the
amount of upper level wind support. Models seem to be coming into
decent agreement on the gradients, somewhere between 8 and 10mb,
but the tricky upper level pattern is adding to the uncertainty of
how much support aloft those gradients will have. Even with the
modest upper level winds currently forecast there's a decent
chance of warning level winds in the mountains. With additional
support aloft we could be looking at an event that approaches the
event we had last week with gusts well into the 70s. For the
valleys and coastal zones probably just advisory level winds for
this event with the exception of those favorites noted above.

Gradients and upper support drop off Friday but still probably
strong enough for warning level winds, but more isolated and
probably confined to the higher elevations.

Skies expected to remain marine layer free through the period
except for some patchy stratus at times along the Central Coast
through Wednesday night. Some high clouds expected to drift by
from time to time but generally ample sunshine through the period.

.LONG TERM (SAT-TUE)...01/134 PM.

Offshore flow continues but weaker Sat-Mon. Still very low
humidities with some breezy winds at times, especially Saturday.
Chilly overnight temps continuing with the Antelope Valley and
interior SLO County consistently dropping into the 20s and even
high teens for Lancaster.

Lots of disagreement beyond Monday. In general the long wave ridge
will remain in place along the West Coast with upper lows either
trying to slide underneath it or over the top and models are
still all over the place with this. So not a lot of confidence in
the big boost of offshore gradients by the GFS next Tuesday as the
EC ensembles are generally pretty light with winds mostly under
30mph. However, some degree of offshore flow expected through at
least Wednesday. And continued mild daytime temps with highs still
mostly in the 70s.

Unfortunately, GFS/EC ensembles continue to show little chance of
any meaningful precip through the middle of the month.

&&

.AVIATION...01/2354Z.

At 23Z, the marine layer depth was around 250 feet deep at KLAX.
The top of the inversion was near 1400 feet with a temperature of
23 degrees Celsius.

High confidence in the current forecast. VFR conditions are
expected through the period. There is a chance of moderate to
strong low-level wind shear at terminals south of Point
Conception between 02Z and 16Z.

KLAX...VFR conditions are expected through the period. Any east
winds will remain less than 7 knots.

KBUR...VFR conditions are expected through the period. There is a
chance of moderate low-level wind shear between 02Z and 10Z.

&&

.MARINE...01/127 PM.

For the Outer Waters, moderate to high confidence in current
forecast. High confidence in Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level
winds and seas continuing through this evening then winds and seas
below SCA levels on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, there is a
50% chance of SCA level northeast winds across PZZ676.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal, moderate to high
confidence in current forecast. There is a 40% chance of SCA level
winds this afternoon and evening. Otherwise, high confidence in
winds and seas remaining below SCA levels through Saturday.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception, moderate to high
confidence in current forecast. Through tonight, high confidence
in winds and seas remaining below SCA levels. On Wednesday, there
is a 50% chance of SCA level northeast winds from Ventura
southward, especially near shore. For Thursday and Friday, there
is a 70% chance of SCA level northeast winds from Ventura
southward. On Saturday, high confidence in winds and seas
remaining below SCA levels all southern waters.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...01/144 PM.

A prolonged period of dry offshore flow will continue to bring
elevated to critical fire weather conditions at times across much of
Southwest California during the next 7 days. The Fire Weather
Watches will be converted to Red Flag Warnings today, with the
coastal areas added. Will also be stretching the mountains and
Santa Clarita Valley through Saturday evening...and also mention
that this is a particularly dangerous situation for this area on
Thursday with such strong winds and dry air.

Minimum humidities between 5 and 15 percent will be common today,
with the latest projections trending drier for tonight than they
did earlier. So while some mountain areas will see marginal
humidity increases tonight into Wednesday, improvement over other
areas now look to be minimal. Northeast winds will increase some
tonight into Wednesday over the windier parts of Los Angeles and
Ventura Counties. A significant Santa Ana event is still on
target to form Wednesday night through Thursday, then continue
into Friday with slow and gradual weakening through the weekend.
Gusts should peak between 50 and 70 mph, with minimum humidities
between 8 and 15 percent on Thursday, and 5 and 10 percent on
Friday through Sunday. Red Flag Warnings are likely as early as
Wednesday evening and lasting through Friday or Saturday. There is
a chance for Red Flag conditions to persist through as late as
Tuesday as the dry air persists, but there remain a lot of
uncertainty in the wind projections.

We are urging the public to be extremely cautious with anything
that can start a fire. Some ignition sources are obvious
(campfires, welding equipment, cigarettes, fireworks) but others
are less so (lawn trimmers, dragging trailer chains, firearms).
Those living in wildland interfaces and areas vulnerable to
wildfire should have a plan and be ready to evacuate if a fire
starts. Any wildfire that starts has the potential to spread
rapidly and exhibit extreme fire behavior due to the combination
of very dry fuels, low humidity, and strong gusty winds.

&&

.LOX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
CA...High Wind Watch in effect from late Wednesday night through
Friday morning for zones 46-53-54-88. (See LAXNPWLOX).
Red Flag Warning in effect from 6 PM Wednesday to 6 PM PST
Friday for zones 240-241-244-245-547-548. (See LAXRFWLOX).
Red Flag Warning in effect from 6 PM Wednesday to 10 PM PST
Saturday for zones 246-253-254-288. (See LAXRFWLOX).
PZ...Small Craft Advisory in effect until 9 PM PST this evening
      for zones 670-673-676. (See LAXMWWLOX).

&&

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (FRI-TUE).

Potentially strong and long lasting offshore winds and dry
conditions could lead to critical fire weather conditions and
wind damage Thursday into the weekend. High surf or strong rip
currents will create hazardous ocean conditions at most beaches
Thursday into Saturday. Near freezing conditions over coastal
Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties may lead to plant
damage this weekend.
