Issued at 348 AM CDT Wed Apr 29 2020 A cold front advancing eastward through east central Illinois will keep showers going this morning, then an upper level low pressure system will bring a return of showers to central Illinois this afternoon, lingering into Thursday in eastern parts of the state. There may be a few isolated thunderstorms this afternoon, mainly in southeast Illinois. Much cooler temperatures are expected today and Thursday, with highs in the 50s and low 60s. && .SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight) ISSUED AT 348 AM CDT Wed Apr 29 2020 A cold front has passed a Taylorville to Bloomington line early this morning, and should steadily push eastward to Indiana by 7-8 a.m. Showers continue ahead of and just behind the front, then a lull in precipitation will take place for a few hours until an approaching upper level low and surface trough swing into central IL for the afternoon with a cold pocket aloft helping to re- invigorate shower activity around the area. The upper low will slow down considerably, keeping cyclonic flow and shower activity over the area through tonight and into Thursday. Precipitation amounts could exceed a half inch, mainly north of I-74. Much cooler temperatures following the cold front look to bring highs today ranging from low and mid 50s from Taylorville to Champaign westward, and upper 50s to low 60s southeast. Lows tonight should be in the mid 40s, mitigated somewhat by cloud cover and wind, which should remain a breezy NW 15-20 mph, with gusts this afternoon and tonight of 25 to 30 mph. .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday) ISSUED AT 348 AM CDT Wed Apr 29 2020 Cyclonic flow around the slowly departing upper low may keep shower activity through the daytime Thursday east of Bloomington to Effingham. Cool temperatures will continue, although western areas should see a warming trend begin, with highs reaching the lower 60s, while eastern areas in the cloudy, showery area remaining in the mid to upper 50s. A warming trend and dry conditions with lighter winds can be expected Friday and Saturday as high pressure builds into the area. Expect highs in the upper 60s Friday and mid to upper 70s Saturday. Another cold front is expected Saturday night into Sunday, and brings another chance of showers and thunderstorms, along with a cooling trend heading into next week. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Thursday morning) Issued at 705 AM CDT Wed Apr 29 2020 Ceilings will be varying between VFR, MVFR and possibly IFR today as an upper level low passes across Illinois.
